Chapter 6 - The Night the Gates Locked

Emma couldn't speak.

Twenty years collapsed into one word.

Emmy.

Nobody had called her that since childhood except Gabriel.

But Gabriel's voice was rough.

This voice was softer.

Older.

Familiar in a place deeper than memory.

“Dad?”

A broken breath came through the speaker.

“I'm sorry.”

Emma's legs gave way.

Matteo caught her.

“Dad?”

Salvatore returned to the call.

“Midnight. Pier Nine. Bring the ledger.”

The call ended.

Emma stared at Matteo.

“We're going.”

“No.”

Her grief transformed instantly into fury.

“You are not stopping me.”

“I'm not stopping you from getting your father.”

“You just said no.”

“I said we're not walking into Salvatore's trap carrying the only evidence against him.”

“Then what?”

“We make him believe we are.”

Vincenzo was already organizing men.

Daniel, bleeding but conscious, had given them valuable information.

Salvatore maintained a warehouse at Pier Nine.

Six men.

Possibly more.

Thomas Bennett had been held for years under another identity.

Emma couldn't understand.

“Why keep him alive?”

Matteo explained.

“Insurance.”

Thomas knew where copies of records were hidden.

Salvatore couldn't risk killing him until he recovered everything.

Over the years, Thomas had been moved between private facilities.

Drugged.

Isolated.

Declared mentally incompetent under a false name.

Emma's grief became something colder.

Her father had been alive while she buried an empty coffin.

Alive when her mother died.

Alive when Lily was born.

Alive through every birthday Emma spent wishing he were there.

Matteo placed the ledger inside a secure case.

“We'll get him back.”

Emma looked at him.

“You can't promise that.”

“No.”

He paused.

“But I can promise Salvatore doesn't decide how this ends.”

At 11:42 p.m., they left.

Emma sat beside Matteo in an armored SUV.

Vincenzo drove.

Nobody spoke.

Then Emma noticed the red crayon in Matteo's coat pocket.

“You kept it.”

He glanced down.

“Lily gave it to me.”

“When?”

“Before we left.”

Emma smiled faintly.

“What did she say?”

“That my car needs more pictures.”

Matteo almost smiled.

Emma looked out the window.

“She's not afraid of you.”

“She has poor judgment.”

“No.”

Emma looked at him.

“Children are sometimes better judges of people than adults.”

Matteo was silent.

“You protected her.”

“So did Gabriel.”

“And my father apparently trusted Gabriel.”

“Yes.”

Emma looked at him.

“Do you trust him?”

“No.”

“Do you trust me?”

Matteo considered the question.

“Yes.”

The answer came too quickly to be polite.

Emma looked away.

Something had changed between them during the last eighteen hours.

Not romance.

Not yet.

Something more basic.

He had become the person standing between Lily and danger.

And Emma had become someone Matteo allowed into rooms nobody else entered.

Trust was dangerous.

But it was there.

They reached Pier Nine.

The warehouse stood beside black water.

Matteo carried the case.

Emma walked beside him despite every objection.

Salvatore waited inside.

Thomas sat in a chair.

Emma stopped.

Her father was seventy now.

Thin.

Gray-haired.

Weak.

But alive.

His eyes found hers.

“Emmy.”

Emma cried.

Not quietly.

Not gracefully.

Twenty years came out at once.

She moved forward.

Matteo caught her wrist.

Salvatore raised a gun.

“Ledger first.”

Emma froze.

Thomas shook his head.

“Don't.”

Salvatore pressed the gun against his shoulder.

“Ledger.”

Matteo placed the case on the floor.

“Let him walk.”

“Open it.”

Matteo did.

The ledger was inside.

Salvatore smiled.

Then another voice came from the shadows.

“It's over, Sal.”

Gabriel Rizzo stepped forward.

Dog tags hung from his neck.

Lily had drawn him perfectly.

Salvatore swung the gun.

Gabriel fired first.

The bullet struck Salvatore's weapon, knocking it away.

Chaos erupted.

Matteo pulled Emma behind a steel pillar.

Vincenzo and the guards moved.

Salvatore's men surrendered within seconds.

Salvatore ran.

Emma saw him heading toward Thomas.

“No!”

She moved before Matteo could stop her.

Salvatore grabbed Thomas and pulled him from the chair.

A knife appeared in his hand.

“Back!”

Everyone froze.

Emma stood ten feet away.

“Let him go.”

Salvatore laughed.

“You sound like your father.”

“Good.”

“He ruined everything for you.”

“No.”

Emma's voice steadied.

“You did.”

Salvatore's face twisted.

“He chose evidence over his family.”

“He chose to stop you.”

“And lost twenty years.”

Emma looked at Thomas.

Her father was crying.

Then she looked back at Salvatore.

“But you lost tonight.”

Salvatore tightened his grip.

“You think this is over?”

Emma saw Matteo moving slightly to the left.

Distracting him.

Gabriel moved right.

Salvatore noticed.

He dragged Thomas toward the loading door.

Outside waited the river.

Then Thomas did something nobody expected.

He stamped hard on Salvatore's foot.

Salvatore stumbled.

Emma lunged forward and pulled her father away.

Matteo tackled Salvatore.

The knife skidded across the concrete.

Vincenzo restrained him.

No execution.

No revenge killing.

Matteo looked down at Salvatore.

“You wanted me to become my father.”

Salvatore spat blood.

“You already are.”

Matteo shook his head.

“No.”

Sirens approached.

Salvatore's expression changed.

Federal agents entered the warehouse.

Matteo had called them.

The ledger wasn't merely leverage.

It was evidence.

And Daniel had agreed to testify.

Salvatore stared at Matteo with pure hatred as agents handcuffed him.

“You gave them everything.”

“Everything that belonged to you.”

Salvatore was taken away.

Emma barely noticed.

She was kneeling beside her father.

Thomas touched her face.

“You look like your mother.”

Emma began crying again.

“You missed everything.”

“I know.”

“My graduation.”

“I know.”

“Mom.”

His face broke.

“I know.”

“My wedding.”

Thomas looked confused.

Emma laughed through tears.

“Don't worry. That one wasn't worth seeing.”

He almost smiled.

Then she pulled out her phone.

She showed him Lily's photograph.

Thomas touched the screen.

“My granddaughter?”

“Your granddaughter.”

He cried.

Emma held him.

For the first time in twenty years, Thomas Bennett was no longer a grave marker.

He was warm.

Breathing.

Alive.

At 2:14 a.m., they returned to the estate.

Lily was asleep on Mrs. Russo's lap.

Emma carried her toward Thomas.

Her father stared at the child.

Lily woke slowly.

“Mommy?”

“Baby, there's someone I want you to meet.”

Lily rubbed her eyes.

Thomas crouched despite the pain.

“Hello, Lily.”

She studied him.

“Who are you?”

Thomas looked at Emma.

Emma nodded.

“I'm your grandpa.”

Lily's eyes widened.

“The army one?”

Thomas started crying.

“Yes.”

She reached for him.

Thomas hugged his granddaughter.

Everyone looked away except Emma.

Matteo stood near the doorway.

His expression softened.

Then Vincenzo's phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“Matteo.”

Matteo looked at him.

“What?”

Vincenzo listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

“The federal team searched Salvatore's office.”

“And?”

“They found a second ledger.”

Matteo frowned.

Vincenzo looked toward Emma and Thomas.

“Salvatore wasn't working alone.”

Thomas went pale.

Emma saw it.

“Dad?”

Thomas whispered one name.

May you like

Matteo's expression changed completely.

And upstairs, a door quietly opened.
