Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Never Died

The woman on the security screen stopped walking.

For a moment, nobody inside the control room moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone recognized her.

Even though I had never met her.

Even though I had only seen old photographs.

Even though my memories of her were created from stories, not moments.

I knew her.

Every part of me knew her.

My mother.

The woman I had been told died when I was a child.

The woman whose absence shaped my entire life.

The woman I spent years believing I would never see again.

She was alive.

And she was inside the facility.

My phone slipped slightly in my hand.

I didn't realize I had stopped breathing until Michael grabbed my shoulder.

"Elena."

I looked at him.

"That's my mother."

Nobody answered.

That silence was worse than any denial.

Because if they had told me I was wrong, I could have fought it.

If they had laughed, I could have questioned the image.

But nobody did.

Richard looked away.

Michael lowered his weapon.

And Daniel's frozen face appeared on the paused video behind me.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except me.

"How long?"

My voice was barely above a whisper.

Richard closed his eyes.

"Elena..."

"How long has she been alive?"

No one answered.

I stepped forward.

"How long?"

The alarm continued flashing.

The woman's image remained on the screen.

My mother.

Walking through a military facility that supposedly didn't exist.

A facility connected to every secret that had followed me for years.

Finally, Michael spoke.

"Since before Nightfall."

I looked at him.

"What?"

Michael swallowed.

"Your mother wasn't a victim of an accident."

The room became colder.

"What are you saying?"

He looked at the screen.

"Your mother disappeared because she found the same thing your father found."

My hands tightened.

"My father and my mother were both involved?"

Richard finally spoke.

"They were trying to expose something."

I turned toward him.

"Something inside the military."

He nodded.

"Yes."

I looked back at the screen.

My mother was no longer just a missing person.

She was a person who had been hiding.

A person who knew the truth.

A person who allowed me to grow up believing she was gone.

The anger came before the sadness.

Because I had spent my entire life mourning someone who was still alive.

I had looked at her old photographs.

I had listened to stories about her.

I had wondered what she would think of the woman I became.

And she was alive.

She knew.

"Why didn't she come back?"

Nobody answered.

That was the question that hurt the most.

Not why she left.

Not why she disappeared.

Why didn't she come back?

Michael looked at me.

"Because she believed coming back would put you in danger."

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it sounded exactly like everyone else.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had an explanation.

Everyone had decided they knew what was best for me.

"And who protected me from the truth?"

No one spoke.

I looked at Richard.

Then Michael.

Then Daniel's frozen image.

"My whole life was built on lies."

Richard stepped closer.

"Elena, listen to me."

I raised my hand.

"No."

He stopped.

"For years, everyone made decisions for me."

I looked at the screen.

"My parents."

"Your family."

"My husband."

The word husband felt strange.

Like I was talking about someone I used to know.

"I don't need anyone protecting me anymore."

The control room door suddenly unlocked.

Everyone turned.

The handle moved.

Slowly.

Michael immediately raised his weapon.

Richard stepped back.

The door opened.

And my mother walked inside.

She looked exactly like the photographs.

Older.

Different.

But still her.

For a few seconds, neither of us moved.

Then she whispered my name.

"Elena."

I wanted to say something.

Anything.

I wanted to run toward her.

I wanted to ask a thousand questions.

I wanted to hate her.

But all I could do was stare.

Because no matter how angry I was...

She was my mother.

The woman I had spent my entire life missing.

She took one step closer.

"I know you have questions."

My voice finally returned.

"Only a few?"

Her eyes filled with sadness.

"I deserve that."

I looked at Michael.

Then Richard.

Then back at her.

"Tell me everything."

She looked around the room.

"We don't have time."

I almost smiled.

Another person saying those words.

"No."

She looked at me.

"Elena—"

"No."

I stepped closer.

"Everyone keeps saying that. We don't have time. It's not safe. You don't understand."

My voice became stronger.

"I spent twenty years living with answers that weren't true."

She looked down.

"I know."

"Do you?"

The question hurt her.

I saw it.

Good.

Maybe she needed to feel a little of what I felt.

"Do you know what it was like growing up thinking my mother abandoned me?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I never abandoned you."

"Then why did you leave?"

Silence.

Finally, she answered.

"Because someone was trying to kill you."

The words stopped me.

"What?"

She looked at Richard.

Then Michael.

Then me.

"Your father discovered a network inside the military."

I listened.

"They weren't just selling information."

My mother stepped closer.

"They were removing anyone who got close to the truth."

A cold feeling moved through me.

"My father was killed?"

She didn't answer immediately.

That was enough.

My heart sank.

"Mom."

She looked at me.

"Your father wasn't supposed to die."

The room went silent.

"What does that mean?"

She reached into her coat.

She pulled out a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

Again.

Everyone seemed to have something with my name on it.

She handed it to me.

"Your father left this for you."

My fingers touched the envelope.

I didn't open it.

Not yet.

Because suddenly I was afraid.

Not of the truth.

Of what the truth would change.

My mother looked at me.

"Inside that envelope is the reason everyone has been trying to control your life."

I looked at the envelope.

"What is it?"

Her expression changed.

"It's proof of who started everything."

The lights flickered.

Michael immediately looked toward the security monitors.

His face changed.

"What?"

I turned.

"What is it?"

He didn't answer.

He was staring at the cameras.

"Someone else is here."

Richard moved toward the controls.

"Impossible."

Michael looked at him.

"You know exactly who it is."

The security feed changed.

Another camera angle appeared.

A person walking through the underground hallway.

Slowly.

Confidently.

Not hiding.

I looked at the screen.

And my stomach dropped.

Because I recognized the uniform.

I recognized the way he walked.

I recognized the face when the camera zoomed closer.

Daniel.

My husband.

But he wasn't alone.

Someone was walking beside him.

Someone carrying the same folder that had started this entire nightmare.

My mother looked at the screen.

And whispered the words that made the room go silent.

"He's not here to save you."

I stared at the monitor.

Daniel stopped outside the control room door.

May you like

Then he raised his hand.

And knocked.
