Chapter 6 - The Woman In The Photograph

The front door opened before we could escape. "Margaret." Claire stood in the doorway holding an old envelope with my husband's handwriting. But behind her was Daniel Whitmore, carrying a file Richard had hidden twenty years earlier. Michael suddenly realized the truth was standing right in front of him.

I froze.

For a moment, nobody moved.

The darkness inside the lake house made everyone look like a stranger.

Claire stood there with the calm expression she always wore when she wanted people to believe everything was under control.

But I knew her better now.

Or at least, I thought I did.

Behind her, Daniel Whitmore stepped forward.

The same man from the photograph.

The same man whose name had appeared again and again in every secret my husband had left behind.

"Michael," Claire said quietly.

My son looked at her.

Not with anger.

With disbelief.

"How long?"

She frowned.

"How long what?"

"How long have you known about this?"

Claire looked away.

That one movement answered everything.

Michael took a step back.

"Claire."

She sighed.

"Can we please talk somewhere else?"

"No."

His voice was firm.

"My mother deserves to hear this."

I looked at Daniel.

He was watching me carefully.

Not like someone who had just broken into a house.

Like someone who had been waiting years for this moment.

"Why are you here?" I asked.

Daniel looked at the envelope in Claire's hand.

"Because Richard left something unfinished."

I felt my chest tighten.

"My husband died fifteen years ago."

"Yes."

Daniel nodded.

"And he still managed to create a problem for me."

Michael stepped between us.

"Careful."

Daniel looked at him.

"Your father had the same attitude."

"What does that mean?"

"It means Richard thought he could expose people who were more powerful than him."

I stared at Daniel.

"Did you hurt him?"

The question came out before I could stop it.

The room became silent.

Michael looked at me.

Claire looked at Daniel.

And Daniel looked away.

That was not an answer.

But it was enough.

"I didn't kill Richard," Daniel said.

I wanted to believe him.

But I couldn't.

Not anymore.

Too many people had lied to me.

Too many people had kept pieces of my life hidden.

Michael noticed the file in Daniel's hand.

"What is that?"

Daniel looked down.

"This?"

He lifted it slightly.

"This is why your father created the lake house."

Michael moved forward.

"Give it to me."

Daniel smiled.

"Still acting like your father."

"What does that mean?"

"It means you think money and power can solve every problem."

Michael's expression hardened.

"And you think threatening my family will?"

For the first time, Daniel looked angry.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

The confidence disappeared.

Then Claire stepped between them.

"Stop."

Everyone looked at her.

She took a deep breath.

"This has gone too far."

Michael stared at his wife.

"You knew."

She didn't answer.

"You knew about my father's files."

Silence.

"You knew about the house."

Silence.

"You changed the delivery address."

Claire closed her eyes.

And whispered:

"Yes."

The word felt heavier than any accusation.

I felt something break inside me.

Not because I was surprised.

I had already suspected.

But hearing it from her made it real.

Michael looked like he had been hit.

"Why?"

Claire looked at him.

"I was trying to protect us."

"Us?"

"Yes."

She stepped closer.

"Do you think I wanted this?"

Michael laughed bitterly.

"You stole my mother's gift."

"I didn't steal anything."

"Then what did you do?"

Claire looked at me.

"I stopped something from happening."

I felt cold.

"Stopped what?"

She didn't answer.

Daniel did.

"Richard was going to destroy everything."

I looked at him.

"Everything?"

"The company. The people involved. The money."

Michael shook his head.

"My father was investigating fraud."

Daniel's expression changed.

"Your father didn't understand what he found."

"Then explain."

Daniel looked at me.

"He found out that the people closest to him were involved."

My heart dropped.

My son looked at Claire.

She looked down.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood.

The question was no longer whether Claire knew.

The question was how much she knew.

"Claire," Michael whispered.

She wiped a tear from her face.

"I never wanted you to find out this way."

I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"Then how did you want him to find out?"

She looked at me.

"I didn't."

That hurt.

Because she wasn't talking about Michael.

She was talking about me.

I was the person she never wanted to know.

The woman she had smiled at.

The woman she had called family.

The woman she had helped organize documents for.

The woman whose house she had secretly controlled.

I stepped forward.

"Did you ever care about me?"

Claire looked destroyed.

But she didn't answer.

And that silence hurt more than a lie.

Michael took the file from Daniel while everyone was distracted.

He opened it.

Inside were pages of records.

Then he found a letter.

His father's handwriting.

He read the first line.

Then his face changed.

"Mom."

I looked at him.

"What?"

He handed me the paper.

My hands shook as I read.

Margaret,

If you are reading this, then the people I feared have already found the house.

I looked up.

Michael watched me.

The letter continued.

The person who betrayed us is not the one you think.

My heart stopped.

I read the next line.

Claire was not the beginning.

She was only the person they used.

I looked at Claire.

She started crying.

"I tried to stop them."

Michael stared at her.

"Who?"

Claire looked toward Daniel.

Then toward me.

And whispered:

"My father."

Nobody moved.

The words didn't make sense.

"Your father?"

Claire nodded.

"Daniel is not the person who started this."

Daniel's face became serious.

"Claire."

But she continued.

"I was trying to find the files before he did."

Michael looked confused.

"Why?"

Claire looked at him.

"Because your father wasn't investigating Daniel."

She looked at me.

"He was investigating someone much closer."

The lake house became silent.

A terrible thought entered my mind.

Someone closer than Daniel.

Someone closer than Claire.

Someone my husband trusted.

Michael slowly turned back to the file.

A photograph slipped out.

It landed on the floor.

I picked it up.

And my hands went numb.

It was another picture of Richard.

But this time, he wasn't with Daniel.

He wasn't with Claire.

He was standing beside someone I knew.

Someone I had trusted for years.

Someone whose name I had never expected to see.

Michael looked at the photograph.

Then he whispered:

May you like

"Mom..."

The person in the picture was my brother.
