Chapter 6 - The Woman From My Forgotten Past

The woman in the security footage held Clara’s stuffed lamb:

"Emily Carter."

When I heard the name, my memories came back in pieces.

A hospital hallway.

A warning.

A promise I had made.

Then I remembered the one thing I was never supposed to forget.

I knew her.

Not just knew her.

I trusted her.

Six years earlier, before Jason, before Clara, before I became someone who apologized for taking up space, Emily Carter had been the person who made me question everything.

And then she disappeared.

I had spent years believing she was just a strange chapter of my past.

A person I met.

A person who left.

But now she was standing in an airport security recording, holding the same stuffed lamb Jason gave my daughter.

That wasn't a coincidence.

Nothing about this was.

"Where is she?" I asked.

Daniel looked at his phone.

"The footage is from Denver airport."

"That's not what I asked."

Nobody answered.

Because everyone understood.

Emily Carter wasn't just a name.

She was the missing piece.

Marcus studied my face.

"You remember her."

I nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"What do you remember?"

I looked down at Clara.

She was still sleeping.

Peacefully.

Like the world wasn't collapsing around us.

"I remember she was scared."

"Of Jason?"

I hesitated.

"Yes."

Marcus stepped closer.

"What did she know?"

I closed my eyes.

And suddenly the memory returned.

Not all of it.

Just a fragment.

A room.

A table.

Emily sitting across from me.

Her hands shaking.

Her voice low.

"You don't understand what he's doing, Megan."

I remembered laughing.

Because at the time, I thought she was being dramatic.

I thought she was jealous.

I thought she was trying to ruin something good.

Jason had told me that.

Jason had told me Emily was unstable.

Obsessed.

Dangerous.

And I believed him.

Because I loved him.

"I accused her."

My voice came out quietly.

Marcus frowned.

"What?"

"I told her she was lying."

The shame came back immediately.

"I told her Jason wasn't the person she thought he was."

Daniel looked confused.

"You defended him?"

I nodded.

"I thought she was trying to hurt us."

"And then?"

"She gave me something."

"What?"

I searched my memory.

A flash.

A small envelope.

A hospital parking lot.

Emily saying:

"If you ever start doubting yourself, open this."

My breathing stopped.

"An envelope."

Marcus noticed.

"What envelope?"

"I don't know."

"Megan."

"I don't know."

I hated that answer.

I hated how many times I had said it.

But this time it felt different.

Because I wasn't forgetting random things.

I was remembering things someone had worked hard to bury.

Daniel stepped away and made a call.

Marcus stayed beside me.

"Do you trust your memories?"

The question surprised me.

I looked at him.

"What?"

"Right now."

I didn't answer.

Because I didn't know.

For years, Jason had convinced me my instincts were wrong.

That I overreacted.

That I misunderstood.

That I created problems.

But standing there, holding my daughter, looking at proof that someone had hidden a message inside her favorite toy...

I finally understood something.

My instincts had been right.

I just stopped listening.

"Yes."

Marcus nodded.

"Good."

"Why?"

"Because someone wants you to believe you can't trust yourself."

He looked at Clara.

"And that makes you easier to control."

The words hurt because they were true.

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

Jason.

I didn't want to open it.

But I did.

I found Emily.

My fingers froze.

Another message followed.

You always did have a weakness for people who sounded like they were saving you.

I stared at the screen.

Marcus saw my expression.

"He knows."

"How?"

Before he answered, another message appeared.

Because she was never protecting you from me.

She was protecting you from him.

My heart stopped.

I looked at Marcus.

"Who is he talking about?"

Marcus didn't answer.

"Marcus."

His silence was becoming unbearable.

"Who is he talking about?"

He looked at Daniel.

Then finally said:

"I don't know."

But his face told me he knew something.

Something he wasn't saying.

A security officer approached.

"Mr. Reed?"

Marcus turned.

The officer looked uncomfortable.

"We need to speak privately."

"Why?"

The officer glanced at me.

Then at Clara.

"Because we found another recording."

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

"Another recording of what?"

The officer lowered his voice.

"Of the person who placed the tracker."

My stomach tightened.

"We already know it's Emily."

The officer shook his head.

"No."

Silence.

"What do you mean no?"

The officer looked at the tablet in his hand.

"The footage was misidentified."

My heart started racing.

"What?"

"The woman holding the toy wasn't placing the tracker."

He turned the screen toward us.

A different angle.

A different camera.

A different moment.

The woman was Emily.

But she wasn't alone.

Someone stood behind her.

A man.

Watching.

The officer continued.

"The woman was trying to remove something from the toy."

Marcus leaned closer.

"Not put something in?"

"No."

The officer zoomed in.

"She was taking something out."

I felt dizzy.

"Then why did she have it?"

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was terrifying.

Emily wasn't hiding something from me.

She was trying to find something.

Something Jason had put there.

Daniel looked at the image.

"Can you identify the man?"

The officer shook his head.

"Not clearly."

The screen was blurry.

But there was something familiar.

The posture.

The watch.

The way he stood behind Emily.

My heart began pounding.

I knew that shape.

I knew that person.

"No."

Marcus looked at me.

"Megan?"

I stepped closer to the screen.

"Zoom in."

The officer did.

The man's face became slightly clearer.

Not enough for anyone else.

But enough for me.

Because I had seen that face every morning for years.

At breakfast.

Across the dinner table.

In our wedding photographs.

"Jason."

Nobody moved.

Daniel immediately looked at Marcus.

Marcus's expression hardened.

"Are you sure?"

I nodded.

But then something happened.

Something that made even less sense.

Because the timestamp appeared beneath the footage.

The date.

The time.

The location.

Denver airport.

Six months ago.

Before my divorce.

Before my flight.

Before Jason posted the photograph.

I stared at the screen.

Jason wasn't following me after I left.

He had been watching me long before I left.

And suddenly every strange moment from the past year returned.

The questions he asked.

The places he unexpectedly appeared.

The times he knew things I never told him.

He wasn't reacting to my decisions.

He was tracking them.

My phone rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

Everyone went silent.

I answered.

At first, nobody spoke.

Then a woman's voice whispered.

"Megan."

I knew that voice.

My heart stopped.

"Emily?"

A shaky breath.

"Don't trust Marcus."

I looked at him.

He heard the name.

His face changed.

"Emily, where are you?"

"Megan, listen to me."

Her voice sounded terrified.

"I don't have much time."

"Why did you put the note in Clara's toy?"

"I didn't."

"Then who did?"

Silence.

Then:

"The same person who erased your memories."

My blood turned cold.

"What are you talking about?"

"Megan, six years ago, you found out what Jason was doing."

I closed my eyes.

"No."

"You did."

"I would remember."

"You would if he hadn't made sure you couldn't."

My breathing became uneven.

"What did he do?"

Emily whispered:

"He didn't just lie to you."

A pause.

"He had someone help him."

My hand tightened around the phone.

"Who?"

Before she answered, I heard something in the background.

A door opening.

Emily gasped.

Then she whispered one final sentence.

"Megan, run."

The call ended.

I stared at the screen.

Then Marcus's phone rang.

He looked at it.

His face turned pale.

"Who is it?" I asked.

He didn't answer.

He slowly turned the phone toward me.

The caller ID was visible.

It was Emily Carter.

May you like

But the call wasn't coming from her phone.

It was coming from mine.
