Chapter 4 - The Secret Hidden In Clara's Toy

The stranger's photograph showed my daughter sleeping on the airplane:

"She remembers everything."

When Marcus saw the image, he noticed something hidden near Clara's stuffed lamb.

A small silver mark had been added to the toy months earlier.

Then he whispered three words:

"That's not random."

I couldn't move.

The picture on my phone wasn't just another photograph.

It wasn't a passenger capturing a strange moment.

It was taken from our row.

From close enough that whoever took it had been sitting only a few feet away from us.

Close enough to see Clara sleeping.

Close enough to see Marcus.

Close enough to see me.

My first instinct was to turn around.

To search the crowd.

To find the person who had been watching us.

But the airport terminal was full of strangers.

Hundreds of faces.

Hundreds of phones.

Hundreds of people who could disappear in seconds.

"Megan."

Marcus's voice pulled me back.

I looked at him.

His expression had changed completely.

The calm confidence he carried on the airplane was gone.

This wasn't a businessman dealing with bad publicity.

This was a man who had just realized something dangerous had entered his life.

"Who sent that?"

I swallowed.

"Unknown number."

"Did they send anything else?"

"No."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Show me."

I handed him the phone.

He studied the image carefully.

Then he zoomed in.

Again.

And again.

"What?"

I watched his face.

"Daniel?"

He didn't answer.

He looked at Marcus.

"There is something in the reflection."

My stomach dropped.

"What reflection?"

He turned the phone toward us.

In the airplane window, almost invisible behind Clara's sleeping face, was another reflection.

A hand.

Holding something.

Not a phone.

A camera.

Marcus took the phone.

His jaw tightened.

"That's professional equipment."

"What does that mean?"

He didn't respond immediately.

That silence scared me.

"Marcus."

He looked at me.

"That wasn't a passenger taking a picture."

The words hit harder than I expected.

"Then who was it?"

"I don't know."

"But someone was following you."

He looked away.

And that told me everything.

"You do know something."

"No."

"Marcus."

He sighed.

"I know there are people who want information about me."

"Because of your company?"

"Because of everything."

That wasn't an answer.

It was a warning.

I looked down at Clara.

She was still sleeping.

Completely unaware that adults around her were fighting over a story she had accidentally become part of.

I touched her hair.

Then I noticed something.

The stuffed lamb.

The same toy she had carried everywhere since she was six months old.

It was pressed against her chest.

The person who took the picture had captured the lamb perfectly.

Including a tiny silver mark near its ear.

I frowned.

"Wait."

Everyone looked at me.

I took the toy carefully from Clara.

She immediately reached for it in her sleep.

"It's okay, baby."

I examined it.

The lamb was old.

The fabric was worn.

One ear was slightly darker from years of being held.

But near the stitching was a tiny silver symbol.

A mark I had never seen before.

Marcus leaned closer.

"Where did she get that?"

I looked at him.

"What?"

"The lamb."

"She's had it since she was a baby."

"From where?"

I frowned.

"Jason bought it."

The second I said his name, Marcus's expression changed.

"Jason bought this?"

"Yes."

"Are you sure?"

"Of course I'm sure."

I remembered that day.

Clara was only three months old.

Jason had come home with the stuffed animal after a business trip.

He had smiled and said:

"Something special for my little girl."

At the time, I thought it was sweet.

Now, for the first time, the memory felt wrong.

Marcus gently touched the silver mark.

"Megan, look closer."

I moved toward the airport window light.

The symbol wasn't a decoration.

It was engraved.

A tiny number.

My heartbeat increased.

"What is that?"

Daniel took out his phone.

He photographed it.

Then searched something.

His face changed.

"What?"

He didn't answer.

"Daniel."

He looked up.

"This isn't a toy mark."

The silence returned.

"What is it?"

He hesitated.

Then:

"It's an identification number."

"For what?"

Daniel looked at Marcus.

"You're sure?"

Marcus nodded.

Daniel looked at me.

"Some private security companies use markings like this."

I stared at him.

"Security?"

"Tracking."

The word made my skin crawl.

I pulled Clara closer.

"No."

Marcus immediately shook his head.

"Wait."

"No."

"Megan, listen."

"Someone put a tracker on my daughter?"

"We don't know that."

"You just said tracking."

"We need to confirm."

I looked at the lamb.

The innocent little toy Clara slept with every night suddenly felt different.

Like I had been carrying a secret without knowing it.

"Why would Jason do this?"

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was obvious.

Control.

Jason always needed control.

Where I went.

Who I talked to.

What I did.

But this was different.

This was not jealousy.

This was planning.

My phone rang.

I almost dropped it.

The screen showed:

Jason.

Marcus looked at me.

"Don't answer."

I stared at the name.

Part of me wanted to.

Part of me wanted to hear him explain.

To hear him lie.

Because I knew Jason.

He was always better when he could hear my voice.

He could tell when I was scared.

He could find the exact place where my confidence broke.

I declined the call.

Immediately, a voicemail appeared.

Then another message.

You found it.

My blood turned cold.

I showed Marcus.

His eyes narrowed.

"He knows."

Another message came.

I was wondering how long it would take.

Daniel stepped closer.

"Do not respond."

I didn't.

A third message.

Clara was never just your daughter, Megan.

I stopped breathing.

My hand tightened around my phone.

Marcus took it from me.

His expression became darker with every word.

Then another message appeared.

She was the reason I had to watch you.

I felt sick.

"What does that mean?"

Nobody spoke.

Because none of us knew.

Or maybe Marcus did.

I looked at him.

"You know something."

He stayed silent.

"Marcus."

His eyes met mine.

"I need to tell you something."

The way he said it made my heart sink.

"What?"

He looked at Clara.

Then at the airport around us.

"There is a reason Jason knew my name."

"Because you're famous?"

"No."

"Then why?"

Marcus looked like he hated what he was about to say.

"Because Jason and I have met before."

The world stopped.

"What?"

"I didn't know his connection to you."

"When?"

"Six months ago."

I stepped back.

"Six months ago?"

Marcus nodded slowly.

"He came to one of my company events."

"Why?"

"He wanted information."

"About what?"

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked away.

That was enough.

"You knew."

Marcus's voice softened.

"I suspected."

"Suspected what?"

He took a breath.

"That Jason wasn't trying to destroy your marriage."

My chest tightened.

"Then what was he doing?"

Marcus looked at Clara.

"Preparing for something."

I felt anger rise.

"You knew there was something wrong and you said nothing?"

"I didn't know who you were."

"But you knew Jason."

"I knew a man asking questions about me."

"About you?"

Marcus nodded.

"He was investigating my company."

"Why?"

"Because he thought I had something he needed."

"What?"

Before he could answer, Daniel's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face immediately changed.

"Who is it?"

He didn't answer.

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, he picked up.

"Hello?"

A few seconds passed.

Then his expression turned serious.

"Where?"

Marcus watched him.

Daniel ended the call.

"We need to leave."

My heart dropped.

"Why?"

"Because the airline security team found something."

"What?"

Daniel looked directly at me.

"They reviewed the passenger footage."

"And?"

"The person who took the picture wasn't on the passenger manifest."

I felt cold.

"What do you mean?"

Daniel lowered his voice.

"He boarded the plane without a ticket."

Nobody spoke.

A person had entered a commercial airplane.

Sat near us.

Photographed my daughter.

And vanished.

Marcus reached for the lamb.

"There's one more thing."

I looked at him.

"What?"

He turned the toy over.

The tiny silver mark wasn't the only thing hidden there.

Behind the stitching was a small opening.

A place where something had been inserted.

My hands started shaking.

"Jason didn't buy this toy for Clara."

Marcus carefully pulled out a tiny folded piece of paper.

The paper was old.

Yellowed.

And written in handwriting I recognized instantly.

My own.

But I had never written these words.

Because they weren't a message to me.

They were a warning.

Marcus unfolded the paper.

His face changed.

Then he looked at me and said:

"Megan... this was hidden here before you ever met Jason."

I grabbed the paper.

Three words were visible.

May you like

Three words that made my entire body go numb.

"Protect Clara from..."
