Chapter 6 - The Man Behind The Betrayal

The door opened.

Slowly.

Everyone in the hidden room became completely still.

Adrian stood in front of me.

Richard moved beside the table.

Marcus looked toward the entrance with a face I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not concern.

Not caution.

Fear.

A man stepped inside.

And Adrian whispered his name.

"Thomas."

The man stopped.

He looked older than I expected.

Late fifties.

Gray hair.

Expensive suit.

A familiar face.

Not because I knew him.

Because Adrian did.

Thomas had been Adrian's father's closest advisor.

The person who helped raise him after Richard disappeared.

The person Adrian trusted more than anyone.

For years, Thomas had been the man who handled every difficult situation in the Vale family.

The man who always had answers.

The man who always protected Adrian.

But now he was standing in the hidden room.

The room nobody was supposed to know existed.

Adrian stared at him.

"How?"

Thomas didn't answer.

His eyes moved toward Richard.

Then toward the veil in my hands.

Then back to Adrian.

"I was hoping you would never find this place."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"You knew."

Thomas sighed.

"Yes."

The answer was immediate.

No excuses.

No denial.

That somehow made it worse.

"You knew my father was alive?"

Thomas looked at Richard.

"I knew he survived."

Adrian stepped forward.

"And you let me believe he was dead."

Thomas looked down.

"Your father wanted it that way."

Adrian laughed quietly.

A cold, painful laugh.

"Everyone keeps using his name to justify lying to me."

The room became silent.

I watched Adrian.

I had seen him angry before.

But this was different.

This wasn't rage.

This was betrayal.

The kind that came from someone you never expected to hurt you.

Thomas looked at him.

"I was trying to protect you."

Adrian shook his head.

"No."

His voice became colder.

"You were protecting the secret."

Thomas didn't answer.

Because Adrian was right.

I looked at Richard.

"You knew he was coming."

Richard nodded.

"He always comes when the truth gets too close."

Thomas looked at him.

"Don't pretend you are innocent."

Richard's face changed.

"I never said I was."

That surprised me.

After everything.

After all the secrets.

After all the people hiding things from me.

Richard was the first person who admitted he wasn't the hero.

Thomas stepped closer.

"The veil should have been destroyed years ago."

My grip tightened around it.

"You wanted it destroyed?"

Thomas looked at me.

"Not me."

"Then who?"

Nobody answered.

I looked at Adrian.

Then Richard.

Then Elena.

Everyone had the same expression.

Like saying the name out loud would bring something back.

Thomas finally spoke.

"The person who has been controlling the Vale family since before you were born."

My stomach tightened.

"Who?"

Thomas looked at Adrian.

"Your grandfather."

Adrian froze.

"My grandfather died."

Thomas nodded.

"Yes."

"Then how?"

Thomas looked at the old key on the table.

"Because even dead men can leave orders."

A silence followed.

The kind of silence where everyone realizes the story is much bigger than they imagined.

Richard picked up the key.

"My father created the Vale Promise."

Adrian looked at him.

"Why?"

Richard stared at the symbol.

"Because he knew one day the family would become something he couldn't control."

Thomas interrupted.

"Your father wanted to destroy it."

Richard looked at him.

"And you stopped him."

Thomas's expression changed.

"I stopped him from destroying everything."

"No."

Richard's voice became quiet.

"You stopped him from exposing everyone."

I looked between them.

"What exactly is the Vale Promise?"

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Elena spoke.

"It was an agreement."

I looked at her.

"Between who?"

"The Voss family and the Vale family."

She looked at me.

"An agreement that protected innocent people from powerful ones."

I frowned.

"That doesn't sound dangerous."

Elena's eyes became sad.

"It was dangerous because powerful people don't like agreements that limit them."

Richard nodded.

"My father built an empire."

He looked at Adrian.

"But your grandmother discovered how he built it."

The room became colder.

"What did she discover?"

Richard looked at the veil.

"Names."

The answer was simple.

But terrifying.

"Names of everyone involved."

Adrian looked at the hidden documents.

"The box."

Richard nodded.

"The final evidence."

Thomas suddenly moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

He grabbed the key from Richard's hand.

Everyone reacted.

Adrian stepped forward.

"Thomas."

The man held the key tightly.

"I can't let you open it."

Richard looked at him.

"Still protecting them?"

Thomas looked at Adrian.

"I'm protecting him."

Adrian stared.

"From what?"

Thomas didn't answer.

That was enough.

Adrian moved closer.

"Give me the key."

Thomas shook his head.

"You don't understand what happens if that box opens."

Adrian's voice became dangerous.

"Then explain."

Thomas looked at me.

At the veil.

At the evidence hidden inside.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

"Because the person who ordered your grandmother's death is still alive."

Nobody moved.

I felt my heart stop.

My grandmother.

The woman who raised me.

The woman who gave me the veil.

The woman who disappeared quietly from this world.

Someone had killed her.

And that person was still out there.

Adrian looked at Thomas.

"Who?"

Thomas closed his eyes.

Like he had been fighting this moment for years.

"I can't say."

Adrian stepped forward.

"Why?"

Thomas opened his eyes.

"Because if I say the name, they will know I betrayed them."

A sound came from upstairs.

A phone ringing.

Everyone turned.

Nobody moved.

Because the ringtone was familiar.

Adrian reached into his pocket.

His phone.

But it wasn't his.

The sound was coming from somewhere inside the hidden room.

Marcus looked around.

"There shouldn't be another phone."

The ringing continued.

Slow.

Calm.

Like whoever was calling knew we would answer.

I followed the sound.

It was coming from an old wooden box hidden beneath the table.

The same box that had been covered by documents.

Richard looked at it.

His face changed.

"No."

Adrian noticed.

"You know that box."

Richard whispered:

"That isn't the evidence box."

The ringing stopped.

Everyone stared.

Then the box unlocked itself.

A small click echoed through the room.

Thomas stepped back.

"Impossible."

The lid slowly opened.

Inside was not a document.

Not a photograph.

Not a weapon.

A phone.

An old phone.

One that looked like it belonged decades ago.

Adrian picked it up.

The screen turned on.

One new message appeared.

Everyone saw the name of the sender.

Richard Vale.

Adrian looked at his father.

Then at the phone.

Richard's face went pale.

Because he knew.

That message had been sent from a number that should not exist.

Adrian opened it.

Only one sentence appeared.

Adrian, if you are reading this, it means your father failed to stop me.

The room went silent.

Then another message arrived.

And this time, it contained a name.

The name of the person who had been controlling everything.

Adrian looked at the screen.

May you like

His face changed.

Because the name belonged to someone standing in the room with us.
