Chapter 4 - The Voice Behind The Hidden Door

The voice came again.

"Mara."

I stopped breathing.

Because it sounded exactly like her.

My grandmother.

The same soft voice that used to call my name when I was a child.

The same voice that used to tell me stories before I fell asleep.

The same voice I heard the night before she died.

But that was impossible.

I turned toward the locked door beside us.

Nobody moved.

Not Adrian.

Not Elena.

Not Marcus.

Everyone in the room had heard it.

And everyone looked terrified.

"Open it."

My voice was barely a whisper.

Adrian immediately grabbed my arm.

"No."

I looked at him.

"That was my grandmother."

His eyes were serious.

"Mara, listen to me."

"No."

I pulled my arm away.

"I know her voice."

The darkness around us felt heavier.

The room that had been prepared for my wedding suddenly felt like a place where secrets had been waiting for years to come alive.

Marcus stepped closer.

"That door wasn't supposed to open."

I looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

He didn't answer.

That scared me more.

Adrian turned toward him.

"You knew about this room?"

Marcus stayed silent.

"Answer me."

Marcus looked at the door.

"Your father built it."

The words landed like a weapon.

Adrian froze.

"My father?"

Marcus nodded.

"After the first betrayal."

"What betrayal?"

Marcus looked at Elena.

But she looked away.

That told me everything.

There was another secret.

Another piece of the story nobody wanted to give me.

Adrian walked toward Marcus.

"Stop speaking in riddles."

His voice became colder.

"You walked into this house. You knew about the veil. You knew about my father. You knew about this room."

He pointed at the door.

"Now tell me what is behind it."

Marcus looked at him.

"The reason your father disappeared."

Silence.

I felt Adrian change.

His entire body became still.

Because everyone knew one thing about Adrian Vale.

His father was the one person he never talked about.

Not because he loved him.

Because he never understood him.

Adrian had always told me his father was a powerful man who made enemies.

But he never told me why he vanished.

Never told me why people whispered that the Vale family was built on secrets.

Never told me why old photographs of him were missing from family records.

I looked at Adrian.

"You never knew?"

He didn't look at me.

"No."

That answer hurt.

Because for the first time, I realized Adrian wasn't hiding the truth from me.

He was searching for it too.

The old woman, Elena, walked toward the door.

"Your grandmother knew this day would come."

I looked at her.

"What day?"

"The day someone opened this door."

She reached for the handle.

Adrian stopped her.

"Wait."

Elena looked at him.

"If we don't open it now, we may never know."

The handle turned.

Slowly.

The door opened.

A cold wave of air came from inside.

Behind it was not another room.

It was a narrow staircase leading underground.

Everyone stared.

I felt my heart beating faster.

"There's a basement?"

Marcus nodded.

"But not one that appears on any blueprint."

Adrian looked at him.

"My father built this?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Marcus looked at me.

"Because he knew someone would come looking for Mara."

I hated hearing my name connected to every secret.

I stepped forward.

"I want to know why."

Adrian looked at me.

"You don't have to do this."

I looked at him.

"I already am."

For years, I had lived with unanswered questions.

Why did my grandmother hide her past?

Why did she keep that veil locked away?

Why did powerful people recognize something she gave me?

Why did someone try to destroy it before my wedding?

I was done being protected by lies.

We walked down the stairs.

Slowly.

The only light came from Adrian's phone.

The walls were old.

Stone.

Covered with dust.

But someone had been here recently.

I noticed it immediately.

The floor had footprints.

Fresh ones.

I stopped.

"Someone came down here."

Adrian looked down.

He saw them too.

Marcus's expression changed.

"That's impossible."

I looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because only one person knew how to enter this place."

Adrian looked at him.

"Who?"

Marcus didn't answer.

Then a sound came from below.

A door closing.

Everyone froze.

Adrian immediately moved forward.

"Stay here."

I grabbed his hand.

"No."

He looked at me.

"Mara."

"I am done waiting upstairs while everyone decides what I can handle."

For a moment, he just looked at me.

Then he nodded.

We continued.

At the bottom of the stairs was a hidden room.

Small.

Dark.

Filled with old boxes.

Documents.

Photographs.

And one large wooden table in the center.

On the table was a white envelope.

My name was written on it.

Mara Voss.

My hands became cold.

"No."

Elena whispered.

"What?"

She looked terrified.

"Your grandmother said that letter was destroyed."

I walked toward the table.

Adrian followed.

The envelope looked old.

But my name was written clearly.

I touched it.

It felt real.

Inside the envelope was a single page.

I opened it.

The handwriting was my grandmother's.

My eyes filled immediately.

"Mara..."

I could barely speak.

"It says..."

I looked at the first line.

"If you are reading this, they failed to keep the truth hidden."

Nobody moved.

I continued.

"My greatest mistake was believing love could protect a secret."

Adrian stepped closer.

"What else?"

I turned the page.

There was only one sentence left.

And it changed everything.

"I need you to know that the man you are about to marry was never the person I feared."

I stopped.

Everyone looked at Adrian.

His face changed.

Because the letter wasn't finished.

There was more.

A second page.

Hidden beneath the first.

I pulled it out.

And my hands started shaking.

Because the second page wasn't written by my grandmother.

It was written by someone else.

Someone whose name I recognized.

Someone who was supposed to have died before I was born.

Adrian saw the signature.

His face went pale.

"No."

I looked at him.

"Who wrote this?"

He didn't answer.

Because the name at the bottom of the page was:

Richard Vale.

His father.

A man who had been dead for twenty-eight years.

Adrian slowly took one step back.

Then the lights in the hidden room turned on.

And the person standing behind us said:

"Adrian, you were never supposed to find your father's final message."
