Chapter 6 - The Man Behind The Betrayal

The figure on the security screen stepped out of the shadows.
For a few seconds, nobody in the banquet hall breathed.
The image was grainy.
The angle was wrong.
But I knew that face.
Not because I had met him.
Because I had seen him in classified documents.
I had seen his name buried under layers of redacted information.
I had seen the signature attached to decisions that never made sense.
Director Thomas Vance.
The man responsible for military intelligence oversight during the mission that destroyed my team.
The man who had disappeared shortly after the operation.
The man who was officially listed as missing.
But there he was.
Standing inside the future security footage of this room.
Watching me.
My first instinct was disbelief.
My second was anger.
Because for three years, I had carried the weight of a failure that wasn't mine.
I had questioned every choice.
Every command.
Every moment.
I had wondered if I could have done something differently.
If I had reacted faster.
If I had protected my team better.
But now I was looking at the person who might have caused it all.
"That's impossible," Admiral Carter said quietly.
I turned toward him.
"You know him."
The admiral didn't answer.
That was enough.
"You know him," I repeated.
His jaw tightened.
"Yes."
The room felt colder.
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
The admiral looked at me.
"Because knowing his name would have put you in danger."
I almost smiled.
"Danger?"
I looked around.
"Admiral, someone already tried to destroy my career. Someone already took three years of my life. Someone already made me believe my teammates died because of my mistakes."
My voice lowered.
"And you're telling me keeping me uninformed was protecting me?"
Nobody responded.
Because nobody could.
The screen continued playing.
Thomas Vance walked through a dark hallway.
The timestamp showed it was from ten minutes in the future.
Then the camera angle changed.
A different hallway.
A different location.
But I recognized it.
The security corridor outside the banquet hall.
My heart stopped.
"He is here."
Daniel looked at the screen.
"No."
I turned to him.
"You said he was alive."
Daniel nodded slowly.
"But I didn't know where."
The image changed again.
Now the camera showed the entrance of the building.
A man stood outside.
Waiting.
Not moving.
Just waiting.
The security footage zoomed in.
Thomas Vance looked directly at the camera.
Then he smiled.
Like he knew we were watching.
Like he knew exactly who would see it.
The screen went black.
Everyone froze.
Then the lights came back on.
The entire room erupted.
Officers started moving.
Security personnel rushed toward the exits.
People began asking questions.
My mother grabbed my arm.
"Ethan, what is happening?"
I looked at her hand.
Then at her face.
For the first time, she wasn't looking at me like a disappointment.
She was looking at me like someone she needed.
I removed her hand.
"I don't know."
And that was the truth.
For the first time in my life, I had no idea what was coming.
Admiral Carter immediately took control.
"Everyone remains calm."
His voice cut through the room.
"Secure all entrances."
Several officers moved.
Daniel stayed beside me.
My father stood several feet away.
Silent.
Broken.
Like he had been waiting years for this moment.
I walked toward him.
"How much did you know?"
He looked at me.
"Enough."
"That's not an answer."
"No."
His voice shook.
"But it's the truth."
I stared at him.
"You knew Vance was involved."
My father looked down.
"I suspected."
"You suspected?"
I stepped closer.
"And you said nothing?"
His eyes filled with regret.
"Ethan, you need to understand something."
"No."
My voice stopped him.
"You need to understand something."
I pointed toward the room.
"Every person here knew pieces of my life except me."
Nobody spoke.
"My mother knew how to make me feel worthless."
I looked at her.
"Michael knew how to look down on me."
Then I looked back at my father.
"And you knew the truth."
My father closed his eyes.
"I was trying to keep you alive."
I shook my head.
"You keep saying that."
A pause.
"But I don't know if you were protecting me."
I looked at the broken ID card still in my pocket.
"Or protecting yourself."
The words hurt him.
I could see it.
But they were true.
Then Daniel interrupted.
"Ethan."
I turned.
He was holding the damaged military drive.
"The message changed."
I frowned.
"What?"
He handed it back.
The screen was different.
A new message had appeared.
Not from Thomas Vance.
From an unknown sender.
It said:
"Stop blaming your father."
I looked at Daniel.
Then at the message.
A second line appeared.
"Your father wasn't the one who betrayed you."
My breathing slowed.
Because I had spent years believing my father failed me.
But now someone was telling me something different.
The third line appeared.
"He was the only one who tried to save you."
I looked at my father.
His face changed.
Like he knew exactly where this was going.
"Who is sending this?" I asked.
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't know."
Another message appeared.
This time, only three words.
"Look behind him."
I froze.
Behind him?
I slowly turned.
My father was standing near the edge of the room.
Behind him was a large decorative wall.
Nothing else.
Then I noticed something.
A small red light.
Blinking.
Near the corner.
A camera.
Someone had been watching us.
Someone had been inside the banquet hall the entire time.
Admiral Carter noticed it too.
His expression changed instantly.
"Everyone move away from the wall."
The officers reacted.
Too late.
The camera suddenly turned.
Not toward the room.
Toward me.
The small lens adjusted.
And a voice came through the speaker.
A voice I had never heard before.
But a voice that made everyone around me go silent.
"Ethan Walker."
I stepped forward.
The voice continued.
"You spent three years searching for the person who betrayed your team."
A pause.
"But you never searched for the person who gave the order."
The room went completely still.
My father whispered:
"No..."
The voice continued.
"Because the person who destroyed your mission..."
The camera zoomed closer.
"And the person who destroyed your family..."
Another pause.
"Are the same person."
The speaker crackled.
May you like
Then the voice said one final sentence.
"The person you trust most is standing right beside you."
