Chapter 4 - The Commander They Underestimated

The man standing in front of me was someone I had trusted with my life.
Someone I had called a brother.
Someone who had stood beside me in places where one wrong decision meant people never came home.
Colonel Thomas Reed.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The warehouse was silent except for the sound of the emergency lights flickering above us.
Claire looked between us.
"Dad?"
She didn't understand.
She couldn't.
Because how could she?
How could my daughter know that the man standing in the darkness had once been one of my closest friends?
How could she know that years ago, before retirement, before quiet mornings and family dinners, Thomas Reed and I had trained soldiers together?
I stared at him.
"You're alive."
Reed gave a small smile.
"That was your first mistake."
My expression changed.
Not because he was there.
Because of what he said.
My first mistake.
Not surprise.
Not confusion.
A mistake.
"You knew."
Reed stepped closer.
"I knew everything."
Claire moved behind me.
"Who is he?"
I didn't take my eyes off him.
"Someone I trusted."
Reed laughed softly.
"Past tense."
I felt something break inside me.
Not emotionally.
Something colder.
A realization.
The enemy had not entered my life recently.
He had been standing near me for years.
"You helped them."
Reed looked toward Claire.
"I helped create the situation."
My daughter froze.
"What does that mean?"
I raised my hand slightly.
A signal.
Stay back.
Reed noticed.
He smiled.
"Still giving commands."
"I'm not commanding."
I looked at him.
"I'm protecting my daughter."
For the first time, his expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
A crack.
Because Reed knew something Daniel and his family didn't.
They thought my strength came from my training.
They were wrong.
My strength came from the people I protected.
And Claire was the reason I was still standing.
"Why?" I asked.
Reed walked toward the table.
"Because people like you never understand when to let go."
"Let go of what?"
"Control."
I almost laughed.
"You're talking about control?"
I pointed toward the computer.
"You helped them destroy my daughter's life."
Reed looked at the screen.
"You think Daniel and his family are the problem?"
I stayed silent.
"They are only the surface."
The room became colder.
"What does that mean?"
Reed leaned against the table.
"Your daughter was never the target."
Claire looked confused.
"Then who was?"
His eyes moved toward me.
"You."
Nobody spoke.
The answer was impossible.
And yet somehow, it made sense.
"Explain."
Reed sighed.
"You spent your entire life building enemies."
"I spent my life protecting people."
"That's what you tell yourself."
My jaw tightened.
"Careful."
He smiled.
"There it is."
"What?"
"The commander."
The way he said it bothered me.
Not because it was disrespectful.
Because it sounded like he had been waiting years to say it.
"You always believed you were different from everyone else."
I stepped forward.
"Do not bring my daughter into your personal problems."
"Personal?"
Reed laughed.
"You still don't see it."
He pointed toward the phone.
"The recordings. The videos. The evidence."
"What about them?"
"They weren't made to hurt Claire."
My eyes narrowed.
"Then why?"
"To bring you here."
The words hit harder than I expected.
Because deep down, I already knew.
This entire thing had been arranged.
Every message.
Every threat.
Every video.
They wanted a reaction.
They wanted me angry.
They wanted me moving exactly where they wanted.
I looked at Claire.
She looked terrified.
Not of Reed.
Of the realization.
"Dad..."
I walked toward her.
"We leave."
Reed didn't stop us.
That worried me.
People who create traps don't usually let people walk away.
Unless leaving is part of the trap.
We reached the exit.
The door opened.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I looked at Reed.
He said nothing.
I answered.
A woman's voice spoke.
"Don't trust him."
I froze.
Because I knew that voice too.
Claire looked at me.
"Who is it?"
The woman continued.
"Your former friend is not the person you should be watching."
My grip tightened around the phone.
"Who are you?"
A pause.
Then:
"The person who tried to warn your daughter before they found out."
The call ended.
I looked back at Reed.
For the first time that night, he looked uncertain.
That scared me.
Because Thomas Reed was never uncertain.
Never.
"Who was that?" Claire asked.
I didn't answer.
Because I was trying to understand something impossible.
There were too many players.
Too many secrets.
Too many people moving behind the scenes.
Then Mark's phone suddenly received a message.
He checked it.
His face changed.
"What?"
He handed me the phone.
The message contained one attachment.
A photo.
I opened it.
My blood went cold.
It was taken inside my house.
A few hours earlier.
Someone had been inside.
Someone had been watching Claire.
But the photo wasn't what scared me.
It was the person standing beside my daughter's bedroom door.
May you like
Because I knew that face.
And that person was supposed to be dead.
