Chapter 1 - The Bed She Prepared for Me

I found a small black envelope hidden inside my mother-in-law's jewelry box and whispered:
"Why is my name written on this?"
When Mariana Salgado confronted her mother-in-law, she discovered a missing insurance document hidden behind an old family photograph.
But one sentence was written across the back:
"After her death, everything goes to my son."
Mariana suddenly realized the bedroom was never meant to be a place of rest.
The first thing I noticed was the smile.
Not the kind of smile a mother-in-law gave when she was happy to see her son's wife.
It was different.
Too calm.
Too careful.
I stood in the doorway of the guest bedroom at 10:17 p.m., holding my overnight bag, while Elena Whitmore moved around the room like she owned every corner of it.
She adjusted the white sheets.
She placed a pillow perfectly in the center of the bed.
She folded the blanket twice.
Then she turned toward me.
"Go get some rest, Mariana," she said softly. "I made the bed for you."
I stared at her for a moment.
Something inside me felt wrong.
I could not explain it.
There was no obvious threat.
No angry words.
No raised voice.
Just a woman smiling at me while preparing a room she insisted I sleep in.
"Thank you," I replied.
My voice sounded normal.
My face looked calm.
But inside, every instinct I had was telling me not to lie down on that bed.
Three months earlier, I would have never questioned Elena.
She had always been polite around me.
Cold sometimes.
Distant, definitely.
But polite.
When I married Daniel, she welcomed me into the family with a hug in front of everyone.
She told me she was happy her son had found someone who understood him.
I believed her.
Maybe because I wanted to.
Maybe because I had spent my entire adult life believing family meant safety.
I was wrong.
That night, the Whitmore house felt different.
Daniel was downstairs talking with his father about business.
Elena had spent the entire evening acting strangely interested in me.
She asked about my health.
She asked if I had been sleeping well.
She asked if I was still working on my small design business.
At first, I thought she was finally trying to connect with me.
Then she asked a question that made my stomach tighten.
"Mariana, did you ever update your life insurance information?"
I looked up from my dinner plate.
"What do you mean?"
She smiled.
"Oh, nothing. Daniel mentioned paperwork. I was just curious."
Daniel had never mentioned my insurance.
Not once.
I laughed lightly and changed the subject.
But I remembered the way she looked at me after asking.
Like she already knew something I didn't.
Like she was waiting for me to reveal a secret.
The truth was, there was a secret.
A few weeks earlier, I had received a letter from my insurance company.
My father had created a policy for me years ago.
After he passed away, I continued paying for it because it was one of the last things connected to him.
The policy was worth twenty-five million dollars.
I had never told Elena.
I had barely told Daniel.
Only my husband knew because we had been discussing our future plans.
We wanted to buy a larger home.
Maybe start a family.
Maybe finally build something that belonged only to us.
That was why Elena's question bothered me.
How did she know?
I walked into the bedroom and placed my bag beside the door.
The room was beautiful.
Too beautiful.
Everything was arranged perfectly.
The candles.
The flowers.
The folded blanket.
The white pillow.
My eyes stopped on the pillow.
For a second, I thought I saw something move.
I blinked.
Nothing.
Just fabric.
Just shadows.
I forced myself to breathe.
I was tired.
I was probably imagining things.
But then I remembered Elena's words.
"Go get some rest."
Not "make yourself comfortable."
Not "let me know if you need anything."
Just rest.
Like she was sending me somewhere.
I stepped backward.
I picked up the blanket from the chair.
Then I walked out.
Daniel looked surprised when he saw me returning downstairs.
"You already finished unpacking?"
"I decided to sleep somewhere else tonight."
He smiled.
"Why?"
I looked toward the stairs.
Elena was standing at the top.
Watching us.
Her smile was gone.
"I just don't feel comfortable in that room."
Daniel laughed softly.
"Mariana, my mom prepared everything for you."
"I know."
I looked directly at Elena.
"That's why."
A strange silence filled the room.
Daniel looked between us.
"What does that mean?"
Before I could answer, Elena walked downstairs.
"Don't be dramatic, Mariana."
Her voice was still calm.
Almost too calm.
"I was only trying to be kind."
I wanted to believe that.
I really did.
But kindness did not usually make someone's chest feel tight.
Later that night, Daniel and I slept in the small reading room.
The couch was uncomfortable.
The blanket was thin.
But I felt safer there.
At around 2:43 a.m., I woke up to a sound that froze my blood.
A scream.
Not a normal scream.
A scream filled with pure terror.
The entire house shook with it.
Daniel jumped up beside me.
"What happened?"
We ran toward the hallway.
The sound came from upstairs.
From the bedroom.
The bedroom Elena had prepared for me.
Daniel reached the door first.
It was locked.
"Mom?"
No answer.
Only another scream.
He pushed the door harder.
"Mom! Open the door!"
The lock finally broke.
The door flew open.
I stopped breathing.
The room was destroyed.
The sheets were twisted.
The pillow was on the floor.
Elena stood against the wall, shaking uncontrollably.
Her face was pale.
Her eyes were wide.
And on the bed...
Something moved beneath the blanket.
Daniel stepped forward.
Then he froze.
Because lying exactly where I was supposed to sleep was a snake.
A large one.
Hidden beneath my pillow.
The same pillow Elena had placed perfectly hours earlier.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Then Daniel slowly turned toward his mother.
"Why was this under Mariana's pillow?"
Elena opened her mouth.
No words came out.
I watched her face carefully.
She wasn't shocked because a snake had appeared.
She was shocked because the snake had not found the person she expected.
The police arrived before sunrise.
Questions filled the house.
How did the snake get inside?
Who put it there?
Why was it hidden under my pillow?
Elena claimed she had no idea.
She cried.
She said she was just as scared as everyone else.
But there was one thing I could not forget.
Before the police left, I saw Elena staring at me from across the room.
Not with anger.
Not with guilt.
With fear.
Like she was afraid I had discovered something much bigger.
The next morning, Daniel found something behind his mother's bedroom cabinet.
A folder.
Old documents.
Bank records.
And a copy of my life insurance policy.
With one handwritten note attached.
My hands shook as I read the first line.
"Twenty-five million dollars will solve every problem."
Then I saw the name written underneath.
My mother-in-law's name.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked back at me.
Neither of us spoke.
Because the truth was already standing in front of us.
Elena had not prepared a bed for me.
She had prepared a grave.
Then Daniel's phone suddenly vibrated.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
May you like
The message had only four words.
"Ask your father why."
