Chapter 7 - The Truth That Finally Came Home

The phone kept ringing.

Unknown Caller — Your Mother.

I stared at the screen.

I couldn't breathe.

For eight years, I had lived with one truth.

My mother was gone.

Not missing.

Not hiding.

Gone.

That was what everyone told me.

That was what I accepted because sometimes accepting a painful truth felt easier than questioning it.

But now, after discovering my father was alive, after learning about Isabella, after finding out my entire childhood had been surrounded by secrets, the one person I never expected to return was calling me.

My father reached for the phone.

I stopped him.

"No."

Everyone looked at me.

My hand was shaking.

"But I answer this."

I pressed the button.

"Hello?"

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a voice.

A voice I had not heard since I was twenty-two.

A voice I had replayed in my memories thousands of times.

"Amelia."

My knees almost gave out.

"Mom?"

Across the room, my father closed his eyes.

Like hearing her voice hurt him and healed him at the same time.

"Are you safe?" she asked.

The question made anger rise inside me.

Not because she asked.

Because she sounded afraid.

"Am I safe?"

My voice cracked.

"Do you know what I went through?"

Silence.

Then:

"Yes."

That answer hurt.

More than if she had said no.

"You knew?"

"I knew pieces."

"Everyone knew pieces."

My tears fell.

"Everyone had a piece of my life except me."

My mother didn't respond.

Then Isabella stepped closer.

"She deserves the truth."

My mother's voice became softer.

"You're right."

I looked at my father.

At Isabella.

At the life I thought I understood.

Everything had been built around protecting me.

But nobody had asked if being protected from the truth was its own kind of pain.

"Where are you?" I asked.

A pause.

Then:

"Close."

My father suddenly looked toward the window.

His expression changed.

"She can't stay on the phone."

I looked at him.

"What?"

He took the phone carefully.

"Listen to me."

My mother's voice immediately changed.

"Thomas?"

"Come to the old church on Lake Street."

My father looked at Isabella.

"Tonight."

"No."

My mother answered quickly.

"Not there."

Everyone froze.

"Why?"

Her voice became tense.

"Because they know that location."

The room became silent.

My father looked confused.

"Who?"

Then my mother said something that changed everything.

"The person who has been helping us."

I felt a chill.

"What do you mean?"

My mother continued.

"The betrayal didn't come from the outside."

Nobody spoke.

"It came from someone we trusted."

My father's face became serious.

"Who?"

A long pause.

Then my mother whispered:

"Richard."

The name meant nothing to me.

But it meant something to my father.

His expression changed immediately.

"No."

Isabella covered her mouth.

I looked at them.

"Who is Richard?"

My father looked at me.

"The man who helped me disappear."

The room became colder.

"The man who saved my life."

He looked toward the phone.

"And the man who knew exactly where I was hiding."

Everything suddenly connected.

The edited video.

The attack on Isabella.

The photograph.

The messages.

Someone had not been trying to destroy us randomly.

Someone had been controlling every step.

My father ended the call.

Then he looked at me.

"I owe you the complete truth."

This time, I didn't interrupt.

Because I was finally ready to hear it.

Eight years earlier, my father discovered that Richard, his closest friend and Isabella's adviser, had been secretly moving money and information away from the Moretti organization.

Richard wasn't trying to steal power.

He was trying to erase everyone who could expose him.

When my father discovered the evidence, Richard tried to kill him.

But my father survived.

With Isabella's help, he disappeared.

The world believed Thomas Brooks was dead.

Because that was the only way to keep Richard from coming after me.

"My father knew about this?" I asked.

My father nodded.

"He helped create the plan."

"My grandfather?"

"Yes."

I looked down.

My family had carried this secret for years.

Not because they didn't love me.

Because they were terrified of losing me.

But love without honesty had still left scars.

"What happened to my mother?"

Isabella answered.

"She went into hiding after discovering Richard had found her."

My father looked at me.

"She never abandoned you."

The words broke something inside me.

A pain I had carried for years finally had somewhere to go.

I sat down.

For the first time since all of this started, I allowed myself to cry.

Not because I was weak.

Because I had spent eight years being strong for a story that wasn't true.

Hours later, we met my mother.

Not in a dramatic place.

Not with weapons.

Not with danger.

Just a quiet room.

And a woman standing in front of me who looked older than the mother I remembered.

But still my mother.

She didn't run toward me.

She knew she didn't deserve that.

She simply stood there.

Waiting.

"I don't know how to forgive this," I said.

She nodded.

"You don't have to do it today."

That answer surprised me.

Because I expected excuses.

Instead, she gave me honesty.

"I missed you every day."

I looked at her.

"I missed you too."

And that was enough.

Not forgiveness.

Not everything fixed.

But a beginning.

The next months changed everything.

The truth about Bellamy & Rowe came out.

The original footage proved what Vanessa Clark had done.

Her lies, the edited video, and the attempt to destroy my business were exposed.

Vanessa eventually admitted she had been paid by Richard to create the scandal.

Richard's network collapsed when Adrian released the evidence his father had spent years protecting.

The Moretti family changed too.

Adrian stepped away from the parts of the organization built on fear.

He chose to protect people instead of controlling them.

And Isabella finally got the peaceful life she had wanted for years.

As for me, Brooks & Bloom survived.

More than survived.

The community that once watched me fall became the same community that helped rebuild.

Customers returned.

New flowers filled the shop.

The broken cooler was replaced.

And above the counter, I placed one photograph.

Not of my father alone.

Not of my mother alone.

A photograph of all of us.

Because for years, I thought my family had been destroyed by secrets.

But I learned something different.

Secrets could break people.

But truth could bring them back.

One year after everything happened, I stood outside Brooks & Bloom early in the morning.

My father was fixing a wooden flower stand near the entrance.

My mother was arranging roses inside.

Isabella sat nearby drinking coffee while Adrian argued with her about resting more.

Some things had changed.

Some things never did.

I looked at the people who had been lost and found again.

The people I almost lost forever.

And I finally understood something.

My father didn't disappear because he stopped loving me.

He disappeared because he loved me so much he was willing to lose everything.

But in the end, he came home.

And so did I.
