Chapter 6 - Elena Moretti

The woman in the photograph was Elena Moretti.

Twenty-two years older.

Alive.

Damian stared at the image for nearly a minute.

No one interrupted.

Claire watched the powerful man who had entered the gala like he owned every shadow in the room slowly become nineteen years old again.

Finally, Damian lifted his eyes.

“Where?”

The message contained an address.

An abandoned lakeside hotel seventy miles north.

Jonathan recognized it.

“My father owned it.”

Damian turned.

“Vittorio?”

“No. Mine.”

Elena and Jonathan’s father had operated the place before Vittorio married into the family.

“Eric knows everything,” Jonathan whispered.

“No,” Claire said.

Everyone looked at her.

“He knows pieces.”

She held up the pendant.

“He still needs this.”

Damian shook his head.

“You are not going.”

Claire almost smiled.

“You knew me for three hours before trying to tell me what to do.”

“This isn’t the gala.”

“No.”

She fastened the necklace around her throat.

“That’s why I’m going.”

Natalie stepped forward.

“So am I.”

Claire stared.

“No.”

Natalie looked surprised.

Claire continued.

“You spent years choosing the easiest side of every conflict. Tonight you can choose the difficult one without standing beside me.”

Natalie absorbed that.

Then nodded.

“Fair.”

She looked at Damian.

“But I know Eric.”

Claire frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“He always plans an exit.”

Damian asked, “Where?”

“I don’t know yet.”

Natalie took out her phone.

“But he tracks everything.”

She opened an app.

Claire stared.

“You track your fiancé?”

“He tracks me. I found his login six months ago.”

“Healthy relationship.”

Natalie almost smiled.

Almost.

She entered credentials.

A map appeared.

Three connected devices.

One at the hotel.

One moving south.

One stationary near a marina.

Natalie pointed.

“That’s his backup.”

Damian called his security team.

“Cover the marina. Quietly.”

Claire looked at Margaret.

Her mother remained by the doorway.

“You’re staying.”

Margaret nodded.

Claire expected argument.

None came.

“I have done enough damage.”

Claire had no response.

Forty-five minutes later, they parked a quarter mile from the abandoned hotel.

Damian.

Claire.

Jonathan.

Natalie.

Evelyn.

Security spread through the woods.

The hotel stood beside black water.

Half the windows were boarded.

One entrance glowed.

Claire touched the pendant.

“How do we open it?”

Jonathan examined it.

“There’s a seam.”

Damian took it carefully.

He pressed the edge.

Nothing.

Claire remembered something.

“My father used to turn it when he was thinking.”

She twisted the oval face.

A tiny click.

The pendant opened.

Inside sat a narrow brass strip stamped with numbers.

Jonathan exhaled.

“A safe-deposit locator.”

Damian looked at him.

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

Claire read the numbers.

14-7-19-3.

Natalie frowned.

“Could be coordinates.”

Jonathan shook his head.

“Elena liked book ciphers.”

Damian closed the pendant.

“We can solve it later.”

A light flickered inside the hotel.

Claire’s phone rang.

Eric.

“You’re late.”

“We’re here.”

“Lobby.”

“Let Elena go.”

“Bring the pendant.”

The line ended.

Damian looked at Claire.

“We follow the plan.”

The plan was simple.

Claire entered with Natalie.

Damian and Jonathan approached from the rear.

Security covered exits.

Simple plans rarely survived reality.

Claire pushed open the hotel doors.

Dust filled the lobby.

An old chandelier hung crooked above cracked tile.

Eric Caldwell stood near the reception desk.

Perfect suit.

No tie.

Gun visible at his waistband.

Elena Moretti sat ten feet away.

Her wrists were bound.

Damian’s mother looked smaller than Claire expected.

But her eyes were sharp.

She stared at Claire.

Then the pendant.

Then Natalie.

Eric smiled.

“Family reunion.”

Natalie whispered.

“You used me.”

Eric shrugged.

“You were useful.”

Her face tightened.

“All those donors.”

“Useful.”

“The foundation?”

“Useful.”

“Our engagement?”

Eric’s smile almost looked apologetic.

“Mostly useful.”

Natalie closed her eyes.

Claire felt no satisfaction.

Some humiliations were too cruel even when deserved.

Eric held out his hand.

“Pendant.”

Claire did not move.

“Elena first.”

“No.”

“You need this.”

He smiled.

“I can take it.”

Claire looked toward Elena.

“Is the key actually important?”

Eric’s expression changed.

Tiny.

Enough.

Elena smiled.

“No.”

Eric turned sharply.

“Quiet.”

Claire understood.

“He doesn’t know.”

Elena looked at her.

“No.”

Eric pulled the gun.

Natalie froze.

Claire did not move.

“The pendant is a decoy?”

Elena shook her head.

“It is a key. Just not to money.”

Eric shouted.

“Enough!”

Claire’s heart pounded.

“Then what?”

Elena looked at Eric.

“Proof.”

The rear door crashed open.

Damian entered.

“Mother.”

Elena’s face broke.

For the first time, she looked old.

“My boy.”

Eric grabbed Claire.

The gun pressed against her side.

Damian stopped.

Jonathan entered behind him.

Elena gasped.

“Jon.”

He stared at his sister.

“Elena.”

Twenty-two years.

One room.

No one had time to feel it.

Eric backed toward the side hallway.

“Pendant.”

Claire reached for the chain.

Natalie moved.

Eric looked at her.

“Don’t.”

She stopped.

Claire unfastened the pendant.

Held it out.

Eric reached.

Claire dropped it.

The silver piece hit tile.

Eric looked down instinctively.

Natalie slammed her shoulder into him.

The gun fired.

Claire screamed.

Damian moved.

Security rushed in.

Eric crashed against the desk.

Jonathan pulled Elena’s chair backward.

Another shot.

Glass shattered.

Claire crawled toward Natalie.

“Natalie!”

Her sister lay on the floor.

Claire’s heart stopped.

Then Natalie lifted her head.

“I’m okay.”

No blood.

The bullet had missed.

Eric ran through the side corridor.

Damian followed.

Security pursued.

Claire freed Elena’s wrists.

Elena grabbed Claire’s face with both hands.

“Thomas?”

Claire swallowed.

“He died twenty-one years ago.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“I knew.”

“How?”

“He came to see me before he died.”

Claire froze.

“What?”

Elena looked toward the corridor where Damian had disappeared.

“There are things you still don’t know.”

A car engine roared outside.

Natalie ran to the window.

“He’s leaving!”

Damian’s voice shouted from the hall.

“Marina!”

Eric had reached his backup route.

They ran outside.

A vehicle disappeared down the road toward the lake.

Damian’s security vehicles followed.

Elena gripped Jonathan’s arm.

“Don’t let him reach the boat.”

“Why?”

“Because the evidence is on it.”

Claire stared.

“What evidence?”

May you like

Elena looked at her.

“The evidence Thomas died protecting.”
