Chapter 10 - The Final Truth And The Second Chance

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Not Julian.

Not Emily.

Not Daniel.

Not even Marcus.

Because everyone in that underground archive understood the same thing.

The truth we had spent so much time chasing…

Was not the entire truth.

There was something else.

Something connected to me.

I stared at Marcus.

“What are you talking about?”

He smiled.

Not a friendly smile.

A victorious one.

The kind of smile belonging to someone who believed he had finally regained control.

“You really don’t know, do you?”

My heart started beating faster.

“Know what?”

Marcus looked at Julian.

And for the first time, I saw something I never expected.

Julian was afraid.

Not of Marcus.

Of what he was about to reveal.

“Tell her,” Marcus said.

Julian didn’t answer.

“Tell your wife what Eleanor kept from her.”

I turned toward Julian.

“Is there something you want to tell me?”

His face tightened.

“Claire…”

“No.”

My voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

“I spent twenty years believing I knew you.”

I stepped closer.

“I found out about the affair.”

Another step.

“I found out about Emily.”

Another.

“I found out about Marcus.”

I looked into his eyes.

“But if there is something else…”

My voice lowered.

“I want to hear it from you.”

Julian looked down.

And that silence hurt more than any confession.

Because silence was an answer.

Emily whispered:

“What does she have to do with this?”

Marcus laughed.

“Oh, Emily.”

He shook his head.

“You really thought you were the only victim?”

Emily’s expression changed.

“What does that mean?”

Marcus looked at me.

“Claire was never random.”

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“What?”

“You think Julian met you by accident?”

I looked at Julian.

He didn’t move.

That was when I knew.

There was something.

Something he had hidden.

Marcus continued.

“Twenty years ago, before Julian met you, he was desperate.”

Julian’s voice suddenly became sharp.

“Enough.”

Marcus ignored him.

“He needed someone who could help him escape Marcus Vale.”

The room went silent.

I felt like the ground disappeared beneath me.

“What are you saying?”

Marcus smiled.

“I’m saying your husband didn’t just fall in love with you.”

My stomach twisted.

“He chose you.”

The words echoed.

No.

I refused to believe it.

“That’s not true.”

Marcus looked amused.

“Ask him.”

I turned to Julian.

“Is it true?”

He closed his eyes.

A painful silence.

Then:

“Partly.”

The word destroyed something inside me.

Partly.

Not no.

Not never.

Partly.

I stepped back.

“What does that mean?”

Julian looked broken.

“It means when I met you, I knew who you were.”

My breathing stopped.

“Who I was?”

He nodded.

“You were working at Carter Financial.”

Emily froze.

“What?”

I looked at her.

“What is he talking about?”

Julian swallowed.

“Your father.”

I felt dizzy.

“My father?”

He nodded.

“Your father worked with Thomas Carter.”

Emily stared.

“No…”

Julian continued.

“Before everything happened, your father helped uncover financial records connected to Marcus.”

My hands became cold.

I remembered my father.

A man who died when I was young.

A man everyone told me had simply been unlucky.

A man who left behind unanswered questions.

“You knew my father?”

Julian looked away.

“Yes.”

The room felt smaller.

“How?”

“Because he tried to expose Marcus before Emily did.”

Emily covered her mouth.

“My father knew?”

Julian nodded.

“He knew the company was being used for illegal transactions.”

Marcus laughed.

“And he thought he could stop me.”

His expression changed.

“He was wrong.”

My heart pounded.

“What happened to my father?”

Nobody answered.

That silence was louder than words.

I looked at Julian.

“What happened?”

His eyes filled with regret.

“I don’t know everything.”

“But you know something.”

“Yes.”

I waited.

Finally, he spoke.

“Your father was investigating Marcus.”

A pause.

“Then he died.”

My entire body froze.

“You told me it was an accident.”

Julian looked devastated.

“I know.”

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

The betrayal felt impossible to measure.

The affair hurt.

The lies hurt.

But this…

This was my entire life.

“You knew the truth about my father?”

“I knew he was connected.”

“And you married me anyway?”

Julian looked at me.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.”

I laughed.

A painful, broken laugh.

“You had twenty years.”

“I know.”

“Twenty years, Julian.”

My voice shook.

“And every day you looked at me knowing you were hiding this?”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to protect you.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I looked at Marcus.

Then back at Julian.

“You were protecting yourself.”

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone knew I was right.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Now you understand.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“Your husband was never loyal to me.”

Julian stared at him.

“Stop.”

Marcus smiled.

“He betrayed me too.”

That surprised me.

“What?”

Marcus laughed.

“Julian always wanted to be free.”

He looked at Julian.

“But he was too weak to do it.”

Julian’s fists tightened.

“You threatened everyone.”

“Yes.”

Marcus smiled.

“And you let me.”

The words hit harder than expected.

Because they were true.

Julian had choices.

Maybe fewer than I imagined.

But he had choices.

And he made the wrong ones.

Suddenly, Daniel moved.

Fast.

He grabbed the folder from Marcus’ hand.

Marcus reacted immediately.

A struggle broke out.

The archive exploded into chaos.

Papers fell.

Boxes crashed.

Emily grabbed my arm.

“Claire, we need to go!”

But I couldn’t move.

Not yet.

Because Julian was standing between me and Marcus.

The man who betrayed me…

Was protecting me.

“Go!” Julian shouted.

I stared at him.

“Why?”

His face broke.

“Because this time, I’m making the right choice.”

For a moment, I saw the man I married.

Not the liar.

Not the coward.

The person Eleanor believed was still somewhere inside him.

Emily pulled me away.

We ran through the corridor.

Behind us, we heard shouting.

Then silence.

Hours later, the police arrived.

Daniel had managed to send the evidence before Marcus could destroy it.

The archive was exposed.

The documents.

The financial records.

The proof.

Everything Eleanor had protected for twenty years.

Marcus Vale was arrested before sunrise.

But Julian…

Julian disappeared.

Nobody knew where he went.

The police searched.

The media exploded.

The world finally learned the truth.

The empire Marcus built began collapsing.

But I still had one question.

Where was my husband?

Three days later, I received an envelope.

No name.

No address.

Inside was a letter.

From Julian.

Claire,

I don’t expect forgiveness.

I don’t deserve it.

I spent twenty years telling myself I was protecting people.

But the truth is…

I was protecting my own fear.

I should have told you everything.

I should have stopped Marcus sooner.

I should have been stronger.

But I wasn’t.

I looked at the next line.

My mother was right about one thing.

The truth had to come out.

Even if it destroyed me.

A tear fell onto the paper.

Then I read the final paragraph.

There is one more thing Eleanor wanted you to know.

Something she never had time to tell you.

Something she discovered before she died.

My heart stopped.

What?

The next sentence made me freeze.

Claire…

Your father didn’t die because of an accident.

He was murdered.

And the person who ordered it…

Was not Marcus.

I stopped breathing.

Because beneath the sentence was a name.

May you like

A name I never expected.

A name that changed everything.
