Chapter 8 - The Truth Beneath The Empire

For twenty years, the world believed Emily Carter was gone.
A missing woman.
A forgotten headline.
A name buried beneath old newspaper articles and unanswered questions.
But she was alive.
And she had just called me.
I sat alone in Eleanor’s house, staring at the photograph someone had left for me.
Stop searching.
The next person who disappears won’t be Emily.
The message was simple.
But the threat behind it was clear.
Someone knew.
Someone was watching.
And that someone was desperate enough to threaten me.
I should have been afraid.
A normal person would have walked away.
A normal person would have packed a suitcase, left town, and never looked back.
But I kept thinking about Eleanor.
Her final moments.
Her hand closing around mine.
The strength in her eyes.
She knew exactly what she was asking me to do.
She didn’t ask me to forgive Julian.
She didn’t ask me to protect the family name.
She asked me to destroy him.
Not because she hated her son.
Because she knew someone needed to stop him.
I placed the photograph into my bag.
Then I made a decision.
I was done hiding.
The next morning, Daniel arrived with an urgent expression.
“We need to move carefully.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because someone accessed the police database last night.”
My stomach tightened.
“What database?”
“The original Emily Carter investigation.”
I froze.
“Someone reopened the files?”
“No.”
Daniel looked at me.
“Someone deleted them.”
The room became silent.
“Can they do that?”
“Not legally.”
“Then how?”
Daniel sighed.
“Power.”
That one word explained everything.
Power had protected Julian for twenty years.
Power had kept Emily hidden.
Power had convinced the world that nothing happened.
But now the balance was shifting.
Because Emily was alive.
And I had proof.
“Did you trace the access?” I asked.
Daniel hesitated.
“Yes.”
“Who?”
He placed a document on the table.
My eyes moved down.
Then stopped.
I couldn’t speak.
The name was there.
Cross Enterprises Legal Department.
Julian’s company.
My husband was still trying to erase the truth.
Even after all these years.
That afternoon, Emily contacted me again.
This time, she agreed to meet.
But she chose the location.
An abandoned bookstore outside the city.
When I arrived, I understood why.
No cameras.
No crowds.
No chance of being overheard.
Daniel waited nearby.
I walked inside alone.
The bookstore smelled like old paper and dust.
Rows of empty shelves surrounded me.
Then I saw her.
A woman standing near the back wall.
Older than the photograph.
Different.
But the eyes were the same.
The same eyes I had seen in the newspaper picture.
Emily Carter.
For several seconds, neither of us moved.
Then she whispered:
“You look exactly like Eleanor described.”
My throat tightened.
“You knew Eleanor.”
Emily nodded.
“She saved my life.”
I swallowed.
“Tell me everything.”
She looked around nervously.
“Before I do, I need you to understand something.”
“What?”
“Your husband is not the same man everyone thinks he is.”
I almost smiled.
“I know.”
“No.”
Emily shook her head.
“You know he cheated.”
She stepped closer.
“You know he lied.”
Another step.
“But you don’t know what he’s capable of.”
The seriousness in her voice made my skin crawl.
“What happened twenty years ago?”
Emily looked down.
“For years, I thought Julian was the biggest problem.”
“And he wasn’t?”
“No.”
She looked at me.
“Julian was weak.”
That surprised me.
“Weak?”
“Yes.”
She sighed.
“He wanted money. Status. Approval.”
She paused.
“But Marcus wanted power.”
The name again.
Marcus Vale.
Emily continued.
“Julian made mistakes. Marcus turned those mistakes into weapons.”
“How?”
“Blackmail.”
I stared at her.
“Julian was afraid of Marcus?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did he work with him?”
“Because Marcus protected him.”
Emily’s voice became quieter.
“And because Julian owed him.”
“Owed him what?”
She looked away.
“Everything.”
Emily finally told me what happened the night she disappeared.
She had discovered financial records connecting Cross Enterprises to illegal transactions.
At first, she believed Julian would help her.
Because he was different.
Because he seemed ashamed.
Because he told her he wanted to stop his father.
But then Marcus found out.
And everything changed.
“Marcus threatened my family,” Emily said.
I felt my chest tighten.
“He knew where my sister lived. He knew where my parents worked.”
“Rachel.”
Emily nodded.
“He told me if I exposed the truth, they would suffer.”
“So you disappeared.”
“I had no choice.”
I looked at her.
“How did Eleanor help you?”
Emily smiled sadly.
“Your mother-in-law was the bravest woman I ever knew.”
She took a small object from her pocket.
My heart stopped.
A key.
The second key.
It looked almost identical to Eleanor’s.
“She hid evidence for me.”
“What evidence?”
Emily looked at the key.
“The original documents.”
My breathing changed.
“The proof.”
“Yes.”
“Where is it?”
She looked at me.
“Under Cross Enterprises.”
I remembered her words.
Under the place where Julian built his empire.
“The company building?”
Emily nodded.
“There is an old underground archive beneath the foundation.”
I stared.
“That’s impossible.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“It was built before the company expanded. A private storage area.”
“Who knows about it?”
“Marcus.”
“And Julian?”
Emily looked at me.
“Yes.”
My heart sank.
“Then why hasn’t he destroyed it?”
“Because he can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because the two keys are required.”
I looked at the key in her hand.
“Eleanor had one.”
“And I had the other.”
Together.
Two pieces of the same secret.
I asked the question I had been afraid to ask.
“Emily…”
She looked at me.
“Did Julian kill anyone?”
Her face changed.
Not anger.
Sadness.
“I don’t know.”
The answer surprised me.
“But you think he did.”
“I think Julian has spent twenty years running from what he allowed to happen.”
Allowed.
Not caused.
Not committed.
Allowed.
That word mattered.
“What happened to my mother-in-law?”
Emily looked away.
“Eleanor discovered Julian and Marcus were planning something.”
“What?”
“I don’t know.”
“You don’t know?”
“No.”
She looked at me.
“But I know she was terrified.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Terrified of what?”
Emily whispered:
“That they would take the evidence before she could reveal it.”
My heart stopped.
“Wait.”
I looked at her.
“Are you saying Eleanor’s death…”
Emily didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
The possibility entered my mind.
A possibility I didn’t want.
A possibility that made me sick.
“Are you saying Julian might have hurt his own mother?”
Emily looked at me with sadness.
“I’m saying you should never underestimate what people will do to protect their secrets.”
That night, I returned to the hotel.
I couldn’t sleep.
Too many questions.
Too many possibilities.
Then, at 2:13 a.m., my phone rang.
Julian.
I stared at the screen.
Then answered.
“Hello.”
His voice was quiet.
Different.
“Claire.”
“What?”
“I need to see you.”
I almost laughed.
“Why?”
“Because you’re in danger.”
I froze.
“From who?”
Silence.
Then:
“Marcus.”
My grip tightened around the phone.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I don’t care if you believe me.”
His voice cracked slightly.
“I’m telling you the truth.”
“The truth?”
I stood up.
“You haven’t told me the truth in twenty years.”
A long pause.
Then Julian said something I never expected.
“I know what my mother gave you.”
My heart stopped.
“How?”
“Because she told me she was going to.”
I felt cold.
“She told you?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t you stop her?”
Silence.
The answer came quietly.
“Because I knew she was right.”
I couldn’t speak.
For the first time…
Julian sounded broken.
Not angry.
Not controlling.
Broken.
“Claire.”
“Yes?”
“If you find what’s under that building…”
He paused.
“Don’t trust anyone.”
I frowned.
“Not even you?”
Another long silence.
Then he whispered:
“Especially me.”
The call ended.
I stood frozen.
Because now I had a new problem.
The man I believed was my enemy…
Had just warned me about someone worse.
And tomorrow night…
Emily and I were going beneath the building where Julian built his empire.
To unlock the secret that had been buried for twenty years.
But as I looked out the hotel window…
I noticed a black car parked across the street.
The same car had been there for hours.
Watching.
Waiting.
May you like
And inside that car…
Someone was watching me.
