Chapter 7 - The Voice That Brought Us Back Together

The person on the screen raised his hand.
And knocked.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because every person standing in that vault understood the same impossible truth.
The man standing outside my mansion was Richard Hale.
My father.
The man who had been buried eight years ago.
My fingers tightened around the photograph in my hand.
The picture of Clara.
The message on the back burned in my mind.
Ask Clara who her father is.
I looked at her.
She looked terrified.
Not surprised.
Not confused.
Terrified.
"You knew."
My voice was quiet.
Clara shook her head.
"No."
"Then why does that photograph exist?"
She didn't answer.
The knocking continued.
Slow.
Patient.
Like whoever stood outside already knew we would eventually open the door.
Nathan stepped forward.
"Preston, don't."
I looked at him.
"You told me my father was alive."
"No."
"You told me there was a network."
"Because there was."
"You knew more than you admitted."
Nathan looked down.
And that was the first time I saw something I had never seen from him before.
Regret.
"I knew pieces."
"Pieces?"
His jaw tightened.
"Your father made sure nobody knew the whole picture."
I looked at the screen.
At the man waiting outside.
"Then why is he here now?"
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
Except maybe Clara.
I turned toward her.
"Who is your father?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
"I don't know."
The answer surprised me.
Not because I believed her.
Because I heard the pain in her voice.
"What do you mean you don't know?"
"My mother never told me his name."
"Your mother worked for Isabella."
"Yes."
"She knew my wife."
"Yes."
"And she never told you who your father was?"
Clara shook her head.
"She only told me one thing."
"What?"
"That my father was the reason Isabella was afraid."
The room became silent.
A cold feeling moved through me.
Because there was only one person who could connect all these secrets.
Richard Hale.
My father.
The man who had built everything I inherited.
The man who had apparently destroyed everything I loved.
The mansion door opened downstairs.
The security system should have stopped him.
It didn't.
The cameras followed his movement.
He walked through the hallway slowly.
Like he owned the place.
Like he had never left.
Daniel saw him on the monitor.
And he immediately stepped back.
"No."
It was the strongest emotion I had heard from him.
Fear.
I moved toward my son.
"Daniel."
He grabbed my hand.
His small fingers were shaking.
"He hurt Mommy."
The words hit me harder than anything else.
My son remembered.
He remembered my father.
He remembered the night Isabella died.
And he had been carrying that memory alone.
For two years.
I knelt beside him.
"Are you sure?"
Daniel nodded.
Then he looked at Clara.
"She knows."
Everyone turned.
Clara froze.
"Daniel..."
My son pointed at her.
Then at the screen.
Then he whispered:
"She was there."
I looked at Clara.
Her face changed.
Because she knew exactly what he meant.
"You were at the accident."
Clara closed her eyes.
A tear fell.
"Yes."
The truth landed like a weapon.
"You were there?"
"I wasn't supposed to be."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
"Because Isabella made me promise."
"Again with the promises."
My voice rose.
"Everyone keeps telling me Isabella wanted to protect me."
I stepped closer.
"But nobody tells me from what."
Clara looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
"From your father."
The words finally came.
The ones everyone had been avoiding.
"Richard wasn't trying to control your company."
She took a breath.
"He was trying to control Daniel."
My hands curled into fists.
"Why?"
"Because Daniel inherited something."
"What?"
Clara looked toward the file.
"The original Hale family records."
I frowned.
"What records?"
"Your grandfather's documents."
I shook my head.
"My grandfather?"
"Your family didn't build its empire the way you were told."
Nathan spoke quietly.
"Richard found the records years ago."
I looked at him.
"And you helped him."
Nathan looked ashamed.
"At first."
That answer made me angry.
"At first?"
"I thought he was protecting the company."
"And then?"
Nathan looked at Daniel.
"Then I saw what he was willing to do."
The mansion door downstairs slammed.
Everyone froze.
Footsteps moved closer.
Richard wasn't hiding anymore.
He wanted us to hear him coming.
I grabbed the old documents from the table.
The truth Isabella died protecting.
The truth my father spent years burying.
The footsteps stopped outside the vault.
Then the door opened.
Richard Hale stood there.
Older.
Different.
But unmistakably alive.
His eyes moved across the room.
Over Nathan.
Over Clara.
Over Daniel.
Then they stopped on me.
"Hello, Preston."
My entire body went cold.
I had imagined this moment a thousand times.
Confronting the man responsible for my family's destruction.
But I never imagined he would look at me like a disappointed father.
"You should have stayed away from this."
I laughed softly.
"You were dead."
Richard smiled.
"That was the idea."
Daniel moved behind me.
Richard noticed.
And his expression changed.
For the first time, I saw something ugly.
Not anger.
Not sadness.
Possession.
Like Daniel was something that belonged to him.
"You have no idea what your son carries."
I stepped in front of Daniel.
"He's my son."
Richard looked at me.
"No."
The word was calm.
Certain.
"He's the reason your mother died."
The room went silent.
I felt Daniel's hand disappear from mine.
"What did you say?"
Richard looked at the documents.
"Your wife found the truth."
"What truth?"
"The truth that your family has spent generations hiding."
He stepped closer.
"Your father wasn't the first Hale to make a deal with powerful people."
I stared at him.
"Then who was?"
Richard smiled.
A cold smile.
"The same person who helped Isabella uncover everything."
I looked at Clara.
Then Nathan.
Nobody moved.
Richard reached inside his coat.
He pulled out a small device.
A recording.
He placed it on the table.
"Your wife left you a message."
My heart stopped.
"Why would you have that?"
Richard smiled.
"Because I was there when she recorded it."
He pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then Isabella's voice appeared.
"Preston..."
I couldn't move.
I couldn't breathe.
My wife's voice.
One final message.
Then the recording continued.
"If you are hearing this, it means Richard found Daniel..."
I looked at my father.
His expression changed.
Because he knew what came next.
"And it also means I failed to tell you the truth about..."
The recording suddenly cut off.
The device beeped.
A second file appeared.
A file named with one word.
My name.
But before I could open it, Richard stepped forward and whispered:
"Preston, you need to see who Isabella was protecting me from."
May you like
Then the vault lights turned off.
And when the emergency lights came back on, Richard was gone.
