Chapter 5 - The Truth Behind the Hale Family Empire

The door handle stopped moving.

For three seconds, nobody breathed.

Daniel held Clara's hand tighter.

I stood in front of them, staring at the office door.

Someone was standing outside.

Someone who knew exactly where we were.

Someone who knew Isabella's hidden file existed.

My mind raced through every possibility.

An employee.

An enemy.

Someone from my company.

But deep down, I already knew.

The worst threats were never strangers.

They were the people who knew where you kept the spare keys.

The door opened.

Slowly.

The first thing I saw was a hand.

Then a familiar face.

"Nathan."

My voice was empty.

Nathan Cross stepped into my office.

The same man who had stood beside me at Isabella's funeral.

The same man who told me I was like a brother to him.

The same man whose photograph was now hidden inside my wife's secret file.

He looked at the darkness around him.

Then at Clara.

Then at Daniel.

His expression changed for only a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Not surprise.

Fear.

"What are you doing here?" I asked.

Nathan forced a small smile.

"I came to check on you."

I almost laughed.

"At midnight?"

He looked toward the broken lights.

"I saw the security system go offline."

"You saw?"

The question hung between us.

Because I knew my security system.

Nobody outside my family should have known it was offline.

Nathan noticed my expression.

And his smile disappeared.

"Preston..."

"How did you know the system was down?"

Silence.

A long silence.

The kind that answers a question before anyone speaks.

Daniel moved behind Clara.

Nathan saw it.

His face tightened.

That small reaction confirmed something.

My son was afraid of him.

Not because he was a stranger.

Because he remembered him.

"You were there that night."

I said it quietly.

Nathan looked at me.

"What?"

"The night Isabella died."

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

"Preston, you're grieving."

"Don't do that."

"Do what?"

"Act like I'm losing my mind."

My voice became colder.

"Everyone has been telling me that for two years."

Nathan stepped forward.

"Because you are looking for something that isn't there."

I looked at him.

Then at the file on my desk.

Then at the photograph.

"You mean this?"

I held up the picture.

For the first time, Nathan looked genuinely shaken.

Where there had been confidence, there was now panic.

"Where did you get that?"

I stared at him.

"The question is why you care."

Nathan didn't answer.

Clara moved closer to Daniel.

"He's the one."

Nathan looked at her.

"Who are you?"

The way he said it told me everything.

He knew she existed.

But he didn't know she was here.

That meant something.

For the first time tonight, Nathan wasn't controlling the situation.

"You don't remember me?" Clara asked.

Nathan's face changed.

Only for a moment.

But Clara saw it.

"You do."

Nathan looked away.

"I don't know what game you're playing."

"No game."

Clara reached into the file.

She pulled out another document.

"Your signature."

She placed it on the desk.

Nathan looked at the paper.

I picked it up.

It was a company transfer document.

A private account.

A hidden transaction.

And Nathan's name was there.

My stomach tightened.

"You moved money from my company."

Nathan shook his head.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

He didn't.

Because there was nothing to explain.

I had spent my entire life building Hale Enterprises.

Every decision.

Every contract.

Every partnership.

I knew every weakness.

Or at least I thought I did.

But someone had been creating a second empire inside mine.

Hidden.

Patient.

Waiting.

"How long?" I asked.

Nathan looked at me.

"How long what?"

"How long have you been stealing from me?"

His face hardened.

"I never stole from you."

"Then what did you do?"

Nathan looked toward Daniel.

And that frightened me.

Because he wasn't looking at him like a child.

He was looking at him like a problem.

A problem that had survived.

"I was trying to fix what Isabella destroyed."

The room became silent.

My jaw tightened.

"Choose your next words carefully."

Nathan stepped closer.

"Your wife found something she shouldn't have."

"What?"

"She discovered your father’s old business records."

I froze.

My father.

A name I hadn't heard in years.

"My father died before I took control of the company."

"Exactly."

Nathan's voice lowered.

"He left things behind."

I looked at Clara.

She looked confused.

Even she didn't know this.

"What things?"

Nathan laughed softly.

Not happily.

Like someone who had been carrying a secret too long.

"The truth about how the Hale family built its empire."

I felt a chill.

"My family?"

Nathan nodded.

"Your father wasn't the man you thought he was."

I stepped forward.

"Don't talk about my father."

"Why?"

Nathan looked at me.

"Because Isabella discovered the same thing."

The room went quiet.

My wife.

My father.

My company.

All connected.

"No."

The word came out before I could stop it.

Because accepting this meant my entire life was built on something I never understood.

Nathan continued.

"Isabella wanted to expose everything."

"To who?"

"To you."

I looked at him.

"Then why didn't she?"

Nathan didn't answer.

Clara did.

"Because someone stopped her."

Everyone turned.

Clara's voice shook.

"She was going to tell you the truth the night she died."

My heart stopped.

The night she died.

The night I lost everything.

Nathan looked at Clara.

And for the first time, he looked afraid of her.

"How much did Isabella tell you?"

Clara stared back.

"Enough."

The lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone looked upward.

Then the security system came back online.

A screen on the wall turned on.

The mansion cameras appeared.

Front gate.

Hallway.

Living room.

Office entrance.

Then the image changed.

A camera angle I had never seen before appeared.

A hidden camera.

Inside my office.

I stared at the screen.

Because the recording was not from tonight.

It was from two years ago.

The night Isabella died.

The image showed Isabella standing in this exact room.

Arguing with someone.

Someone whose face was hidden.

Then Isabella turned toward the camera.

Like she knew someone would watch it one day.

She said four words.

"Preston, don't trust..."

The screen froze.

Nathan stepped back.

Clara covered her mouth.

Because the camera suddenly zoomed closer.

May you like

The hidden person's face slowly appeared.

And it was someone I never expected to see.
