Chapter 5 - The Man Adrian Buried

Adrian stopped breathing.

The voice came again.

“Adrian.”

Daniel raised his weapon toward the vault entrance.

Victor backed against the steel wall.

Claire whispered, “Who is that?”

Adrian didn’t answer.

He knew the voice.

He had heard it laughing across childhood dinner tables.

He had heard it shouting his name from the dock behind their father’s house.

He had heard it through a hospital telephone after their mother died.

And eleven months earlier, Adrian had heard a recording of that same voice played at a funeral.

His brother’s funeral.

“Julian?”

A man stepped into the doorway.

Mara looked at Adrian.

Then at the stranger.

He was thinner than the photographs in Room 417.

His dark hair had grown longer.

A pale scar ran from his temple toward his right ear.

But there was no mistaking him.

Julian Vale was alive.

Adrian lowered his weapon without realizing it.

Daniel did not.

“Don’t move.”

Julian looked at him.

“Still following orders, Daniel?”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Still supposed to be dead?”

Julian almost smiled.

Adrian moved forward.

“You died.”

“I know.”

“I buried you.”

“No.”

Julian’s expression changed.

“You buried a body they told you was mine.”

Adrian crossed the distance between them.

For one second Mara thought he might embrace his brother.

Instead Adrian grabbed Julian by the jacket and slammed him against the steel doorway.

“You let me bury you.”

Julian didn’t resist.

“You let me hunt people for eleven months.”

“I had to.”

“You let me believe I failed you.”

“I know.”

Adrian’s fist tightened.

Julian looked directly into his eyes.

“If I had contacted you, Mercer would have known.”

“Mercer already knew everything.”

“Not everything.”

Adrian released him.

Julian straightened his jacket.

Then his gaze moved past Adrian.

He saw Mara.

Everything in his face changed.

“Evelyn’s daughter.”

Mara stiffened.

“You knew my mother.”

“Yes.”

“Were you there when she died?”

“No.”

“Did you know she was going to be killed?”

Julian hesitated.

Mara stepped toward him.

“Did you know?”

“I knew she was in danger.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Julian lowered his eyes.

“I knew Mercer had found her.”

“And you didn’t save her.”

“I tried.”

Mara laughed bitterly.

That sentence had followed her all night.

Victor tried.

Claire tried.

Dominic tried.

Julian tried.

Evelyn still ended up dead.

“What happened?”

Julian looked at Victor.

Victor said nothing.

“Tell her,” Adrian said.

Julian entered the vault.

Daniel closed the outer door but left it unlocked.

Julian looked at the black case.

“You found the archive.”

“Part of it,” Claire said.

Julian nodded.

“That’s what Evelyn intended.”

Mara frowned.

“This isn’t everything?”

“No.”

She looked at the hard drives.

“There are six drives.”

“The drives contain evidence against Mercer’s network.”

“And the rest?”

Julian looked at Adrian.

“The part that explains why the Vale family was involved.”

Adrian held up Julian’s letter.

“You wrote that the real traitor was inside our family.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Julian didn’t answer.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Eleven months, Julian.”

“I know.”

“Eleven months believing you were dead. Five years believing Dad died from a heart attack. Now I find out both deaths were lies.”

“Dad’s death wasn’t a lie.”

Adrian froze.

“What?”

“His heart stopped.”

“Then what are you saying?”

Julian looked toward Daniel.

“Someone made it stop.”

Silence filled the vault.

Adrian’s voice became quiet.

“Poison?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“That’s what I was trying to prove.”

Adrian looked at the letter.

“You said Mercer wasn’t the person I should fear most.”

“He isn’t.”

“Then give me a name.”

Julian walked to the table.

“First you need to understand what Dad discovered.”

“I’m finished with stories.”

“This one is why I disappeared.”

Adrian stared at him.

Julian continued.

“Twenty-two years ago, Dominic Vale needed money.”

“For the businesses.”

“No.”

Julian looked directly at Adrian.

“For you.”

Adrian frowned.

Mara remembered something from the archive.

LEVERAGE REQUIRED: ADRIAN.

Julian continued.

“You were born with a serious heart condition.”

Adrian stared.

“I know.”

“You don’t know everything.”

Their father had told Adrian the surgery was difficult but ordinary.

Julian shook his head.

“It wasn’t. You needed a specialist Dominic couldn’t reach. Richard Mercer could.”

Adrian understood slowly.

“Mercer arranged the treatment.”

“Yes.”

“And Dad owed him.”

“That’s how Mercer saw it.”

Julian walked toward the old ledger.

“Mercer used that debt for years. Investments. Property purchases. Shell companies. Dad kept telling himself he was repaying the man who saved his son.”

“When did he realize?”

“When Evelyn showed him what Mercer was actually financing.”

Blackmail.

Bribery.

Surveillance.

Murder.

Adrian looked away.

“My life bought Mercer access to our family.”

“No,” Julian said. “Mercer used Dad’s gratitude. That isn’t the same thing.”

“It became the same thing.”

“For Dad, maybe.”

Julian stepped closer.

“Not for you.”

Adrian said nothing.

Mara watched him.

The feared man from the Obsidian Room suddenly looked less like a Mafia boss and more like a son discovering that his childhood had been used as currency.

Claire opened one of the archive folders.

“Evelyn believed Dominic could help destroy Mercer.”

Julian nodded.

“They created a plan.”

Victor spoke for the first time.

“Three copies.”

Julian looked at him.

“You remember.”

“I remember everything.”

“Then you remember why it failed.”

Victor’s face tightened.

Mara looked between them.

“Why did it fail?”

Neither answered.

Mara’s patience snapped.

“My mother was murdered. Adrian’s father was murdered. Julian pretended to be dead. I was attacked tonight because I found a card under a table. Stop protecting us from the truth.”

Julian looked at her.

“You really are Evelyn’s daughter.”

“Tell me.”

He nodded.

“Someone warned Mercer.”

“Who?”

“We didn’t know.”

“But now you do.”

Julian looked at Adrian.

“Yes.”

Adrian’s eyes hardened.

“Name.”

“Not yet.”

Adrian grabbed him again.

“Stop doing that.”

Julian remained calm.

“If I give you the name without proof, you’ll go after him.”

“You know me well.”

“And he’ll kill you.”

“Try me.”

“He already did.”

Adrian’s grip loosened.

“What?”

Julian pointed toward Adrian’s chest.

“The heart condition you thought was congenital?”

“Yes.”

“It wasn’t.”

Adrian stared.

“That’s impossible.”

“Dad discovered the medical records two years before he died.”

Daniel moved closer.

“What records?”

Julian looked at Adrian.

“You were poisoned as an infant.”

Nobody spoke.

Mara felt cold.

“By whom?”

“The substance damaged Adrian’s heart. Mercer then appeared with the doctor who could save him.”

Adrian shook his head.

“No.”

“Dad believed Mercer saved your life.”

“He caused it?”

Julian’s eyes hardened.

“Someone did.”

Adrian stared at him.

“So the debt was manufactured.”

“Yes.”

Mara understood the cruelty.

Create the emergency.

Offer salvation.

Own the gratitude forever.

“Was Mercer responsible?” she asked.

Julian looked at her.

“That’s what Dad believed until he found the original hospital file.”

“And?”

“The order came from inside the Vale family.”

Adrian went completely still.

There it was.

The traitor.

Not a politician.

Not Mercer.

A Vale.

“Who had access to me?”

Julian looked away.

Adrian’s voice rose.

“Who?”

Claire interrupted.

“We should copy everything before we do this.”

Adrian turned on her.

“You know too.”

Claire didn’t answer.

“You all know.”

Victor looked at the floor.

Daniel looked confused.

Mara realized Daniel genuinely didn’t know.

Adrian laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“My entire life is standing in this room pretending silence protects me.”

Julian stepped toward him.

“I came here to end that.”

“Then end it.”

Julian removed a small encrypted drive from inside his jacket.

“This contains Dominic’s original investigation.”

He placed it on the table.

“And his final recording.”

Adrian stared at the drive.

“You heard it?”

“Yes.”

“What does he say?”

“He names the person.”

Adrian reached for it.

Julian stopped him.

“One warning.”

“No.”

“Adrian.”

“I don’t want another warning.”

“You need this one.”

Adrian stared at his brother.

Julian spoke quietly.

“The person Dad names is someone you still trust.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Someone in my organization?”

“Yes.”

Daniel immediately looked toward the door.

Victor drew his weapon.

Claire moved closer to Mara.

Adrian looked at Daniel.

Daniel raised both hands.

“Don’t look at me.”

“I’m looking at everyone.”

“You should.”

Julian connected the drive to an offline laptop.

Password required.

He entered it.

The screen opened.

Folders appeared.

Medical records.

Financial statements.

Photographs.

Audio.

A video file labeled:

DOMINIC — FINAL.

Adrian stared at it.

“When?”

“Six hours before he died.”

Julian pressed play.

Dominic Vale appeared on screen.

Older.

Tired.

Alone inside his study.

Adrian felt his throat tighten.

His father looked directly into the camera.

“If either of my sons is watching this, then I failed.”

Adrian lowered his eyes.

Julian remained motionless.

Dominic continued.

“Richard Mercer is guilty of more crimes than I can count. I helped him before I understood what he was. That shame belongs to me.”

The recording skipped.

Then resumed.

“But Richard is not the man who poisoned Adrian.”

Adrian leaned closer.

“The person responsible wanted me dependent on Mercer. They created a crisis and arranged the solution.”

Dominic looked frightened.

Mara noticed.

A man like Dominic Vale had been afraid.

That mattered.

“I discovered the truth because Evelyn found the hospital payment.”

Dominic lifted a document.

“The authorization came from a Vale account.”

Adrian whispered:

“Whose?”

Dominic continued.

“I trusted this person with my sons. With my home. With everything.”

The video suddenly froze.

Daniel swore.

“What happened?”

Julian checked the laptop.

“The file’s corrupted.”

Adrian slammed his hand against the table.

“Fix it.”

“I’m trying.”

Daniel joined him.

They copied the damaged segment.

Mara opened the physical documents while they worked.

Hospital records.

Adrian’s infant medical chart.

A payment authorization.

The signature had been blacked out.

But beneath it was a title.

EXECUTIVE TRUSTEE.

Mara looked at Adrian.

“Who was executive trustee?”

Adrian frowned.

“My father.”

Julian shook his head.

“Not then.”

“Who?”

Before Julian could answer, Victor’s phone vibrated.

He looked at the screen.

His face went white.

“What?” Claire asked.

Victor turned the phone toward them.

A photograph showed the entrance of the vault building.

Six armed men were entering.

Adrian checked the timestamp.

Thirty seconds ago.

Julian disconnected the drive.

“We leave.”

Daniel opened the vault.

“Service exit?”

“Behind the rear wall.”

Claire grabbed the black case.

Mara took Evelyn’s folder.

Adrian looked at Julian.

“You knew they were following you.”

“No.”

“You led them here.”

“I checked.”

“Apparently not well enough.”

A metallic bang echoed from the hallway.

The elevator.

Victor looked toward the door.

“They’re here.”

Julian pushed a hidden release behind one shelf.

A narrow panel opened.

“Move.”

Claire entered first.

Mara followed.

Adrian stayed behind with Julian, Daniel, and Victor.

Another bang.

Then gunfire struck the outer steel door.

“Go!” Adrian shouted.

They entered the passage.

Julian closed the panel behind them.

The tunnel was narrow.

Emergency lights activated one by one.

Mara ran beside Claire.

“Where does this go?”

“Another building.”

“You knew this was here?”

“Evelyn designed the escape route.”

They reached a staircase.

Adrian came last.

Gunfire echoed behind them.

The tunnel door wouldn't hold long.

They climbed.

At the top, Julian entered a code.

A steel hatch opened into an abandoned office.

Everyone rushed through.

Victor locked it.

Daniel checked the street through blinds.

“Vehicle two blocks west.”

Adrian turned toward Julian.

“The trustee.”

Julian looked at him.

“Not here.”

“You were about to say the name.”

“I said not here.”

Adrian stepped toward him.

Mara interrupted.

“Adrian.”

He looked at her.

She pointed toward the black case.

“We have the evidence. Let's survive long enough to read it.”

Adrian hated that she was right.

They left through a rear exit.

A black SUV waited at the corner.

They drove to one of Adrian’s secure properties across the river.

No one spoke.

Mara sat beside Adrian.

He stared out the window.

Finally she said:

“You were a baby.”

He looked at her.

“What?”

“Whatever happened wasn't your fault.”

Adrian’s expression remained distant.

“My father spent twenty years serving Mercer because he thought Mercer saved me.”

“Your father made his choices.”

“He made them because of me.”

“No.”

Mara's voice was firm.

“He made them because someone manipulated him.”

Adrian looked at her.

She understood manipulation now.

Mercer had built an entire empire from making victims believe their cages were debts.

They reached the safe house before sunrise.

Daniel secured the building.

Julian restored the corrupted video.

Everyone gathered around the laptop.

Dominic’s face returned.

The missing seconds had been recovered.

Adrian stood behind the chair.

Julian pressed play.

Dominic spoke.

“The executive trustee who authorized the payment was my brother.”

Adrian froze.

“My uncle?”

Julian nodded.

Adrian stared at the screen.

His father's brother, Alexander Vale, had supposedly died seven years earlier.

Adrian remembered the funeral.

The closed coffin.

Just like Julian.

Dominic continued.

“Alexander did not act alone.”

Adrian leaned closer.

“The person who gave him the order was—”

The electricity died.

Every light in the safe house went black.

Daniel drew his weapon.

“Don't move.”

A security alarm began beeping.

One window had opened downstairs.

Victor whispered:

“Someone's inside.”

Adrian reached for his phone.

No signal.

Then footsteps sounded above them.

Not below.

Above.

Someone was already on the second floor.

May you like

A bedroom door slowly opened.

And a familiar voice called Adrian’s name.
