Chapter 6 - The Truth Hidden In The Photograph

The door opened slowly.
Not quickly.
Not violently.
Almost like whoever stood outside wanted Dominic Serrano to have enough time to understand exactly what was happening.
The first thing he saw was a hand.
Older.
Steady.
Holding the edge of the door.
Then the person stepped inside.
Dominic stopped breathing.
Because the man standing in front of him was someone he had seen hundreds of times.
In photographs.
In old memories.
In the stories his family told him.
But never in real life.
Not anymore.
“Father…”
The word escaped before he could stop it.
The man looked at him.
Older than Dominic remembered.
His hair was gray.
His face carried years of exhaustion.
But the eyes were the same.
The same eyes that had watched Dominic as a child.
The same eyes that had disappeared five years ago.
Adrian Serrano smiled faintly.
“Your mother told you I was dead, didn’t she?”
Dominic couldn’t move.
His mind was fighting itself.
Every memory.
Every conversation.
Every funeral.
Everything he believed.
All of it was collapsing.
“You’re alive.”
His father nodded.
“Yes.”
“How?”
A long silence.
Then:
“Because dying was the only way I could protect you.”
Dominic laughed once.
But there was no humor in it.
“Protect me?”
His voice became sharper.
“You let me believe you abandoned us.”
“I had to.”
“You let me hate you.”
His father looked down.
“I know.”
“You let me grow up believing everyone else was telling the truth.”
Adrian looked at him.
“That was the plan.”
Those words hurt more than Dominic expected.
“The plan?”
“Yes.”
Dominic stepped closer.
“What kind of father creates a plan where his son thinks he’s dead?”
The older man didn’t answer immediately.
Because there was no easy answer.
Finally, he said:
“The kind of father who knows someone inside the family is willing to destroy his own child to gain power.”
Dominic froze.
“Who?”
Adrian looked toward the hallway.
“Not here.”
“Why?”
“Because you still don’t know who you can trust.”
Dominic tightened his grip on the letter.
“I found your message.”
His father’s expression changed.
“What message?”
“The letter.”
Adrian looked at the paper in Dominic’s hand.
For the first time, fear appeared on his face.
“Where did you get that?”
“Your office.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“You opened the desk?”
“Yes.”
His father closed his eyes.
“That was not supposed to be found yet.”
Dominic stared.
“Why?”
“Because whoever wanted that hidden will know you found it.”
The lights suddenly flickered.
Both men looked toward the hallway.
Someone was moving downstairs.
Dominic immediately noticed his father’s reaction.
“You knew someone was here.”
Adrian didn’t answer.
“Who is it?”
Silence.
“Father.”
Adrian looked at him.
“The person who destroyed your mother.”
Dominic felt his chest tighten.
“What?”
Before Adrian could respond, Dominic’s phone vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
You finally met him.
His blood went cold.
Another message appeared.
Now ask him why Elena was chosen.
Dominic looked at his father.
“You know about Elena.”
Adrian didn’t deny it.
That was worse.
“How?”
Adrian walked toward the desk.
From inside a drawer, he removed an old folder.
He placed it down.
“Because Elena was never just Dominic Serrano’s wife.”
Dominic stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
Adrian opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
Records.
And one picture that made Dominic’s entire body freeze.
Elena.
Years before they met.
Standing outside a building.
Beside a woman Dominic had never seen.
But he recognized the necklace she wore.
Because Elena had the same necklace.
The one she always kept hidden under her clothes.
“What is this?”
Adrian looked at him.
“The reason your family wanted her gone.”
Elena sat alone in her apartment.
The photograph from the unknown sender was still open on her phone.
She couldn’t stop looking at it.
She knew the woman beside her.
Not personally.
But somehow, she knew her.
A strange feeling.
Like a memory she couldn’t reach.
The woman had the same necklace Elena wore.
The necklace her grandmother gave her when she was young.
The necklace she was told never to lose.
She had always assumed it was just a family gift.
Nothing more.
But now she wondered.
Why did the Serrano family know about it?
Why did Dominic’s father know about her before Dominic ever introduced them?
Her phone rang.
Dominic.
She answered immediately.
“Dominic?”
His voice was different.
Not angry.
Not confused.
Terrified.
“Elena, listen to me carefully.”
She sat up.
“What happened?”
“Did anyone ever tell you where that necklace came from?”
Her fingers touched it instinctively.
“How do you know about my necklace?”
Silence.
That silence was enough.
“Dominic.”
“I need you to answer me.”
“No.”
Her voice became tense.
“You answer me first.”
Another pause.
Then Dominic said:
“My father is alive.”
The room went completely still.
Elena stopped breathing.
“What?”
“He knows about you.”
Her hand moved away from the necklace.
“What does he know?”
Dominic didn’t answer immediately.
And that scared her more.
“Dominic.”
Finally, he spoke.
“Elena, there is something your family never told you.”
She frowned.
“My family?”
“Yes.”
She stood.
“What are you talking about?”
A sound came from behind her.
A small sound.
Like someone moving inside the apartment.
Elena turned around.
Nobody was there.
“Dominic.”
“What?”
“I think someone is here.”
His voice immediately changed.
“Get away from the door.”
She moved back.
“Dominic…”
“Listen to me. Do not open anything. Do not answer anyone.”
Then the call cut.
Elena stared at the phone.
The apartment suddenly felt different.
Not empty.
Occupied.
She slowly walked toward the living room.
Nothing.
Then she noticed something.
The old photograph on the table was gone.
The one from her childhood.
The one showing her beside the unknown woman.
Her heart started racing.
Someone had been inside.
Someone had taken it.
Back at the Serrano mansion, Dominic stared at the folder.
Every page revealed another impossible detail.
Elena’s name.
Her childhood address.
Her family records.
Dates.
Photos.
Everything collected years before she met him.
“This is impossible.”
Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
He pointed at the documents.
“This is why they chose her.”
“Who?”
Adrian looked directly at him.
“Your father.”
Dominic froze.
“You are my father.”
Adrian’s expression darkened.
“Not me.”
A cold silence filled the room.
“What are you saying?”
Adrian pushed one final photograph across the desk.
Dominic looked down.
And everything stopped.
The photo showed three people.
His father.
His mother.
And a third person standing between them.
A person Dominic knew.
A person he trusted.
A person who had been beside him his entire life.
On the back of the photograph was a handwritten sentence.
The person who betrayed us was never outside the family.
Dominic slowly turned the photograph over again.
May you like
Because underneath the sentence was a name.
And when he read it, the office door behind him suddenly locked itself from the inside.
