Chapter 1 - The Night I Carried Her Away

A pregnant woman collapsed in my arms outside our mansion, whispering: "Please don't let them take my baby..."

When I carried my wife away, I found a broken hospital bracelet hidden inside her purse.

Three words were written on the back: "Not their child."

I suddenly realized my family had been lying to me.

I still remembered the weight of her body against my arms.

Not because she was heavy.

Because I knew something was wrong.

My wife, Isabella, had always been the strongest person I knew. She was the woman who smiled through exhaustion, who hid pain behind kindness, and who always told me that our baby would change our lives forever.

But that afternoon, when I stepped through the front doors of our mansion and saw her lying on the marble floor, everything inside me stopped.

"Isabella!"

I ran toward her.

She looked up at me with frightened eyes.

Not the eyes of someone who had simply fainted.

The eyes of someone who had just discovered something terrifying.

I dropped to my knees and lifted her into my arms.

Her hands immediately grabbed my jacket.

"Daniel..." she whispered.

"I'm here."

"Don't trust them."

Those three words followed me long after that moment.

Because standing behind her were the people who were supposed to love us.

My father.

My mother.

My sister.

And my father's assistant, who had worked for our family for more than twenty years.

All of them were staring at me.

But none of them moved.

None of them called for help.

That was the first thing that made me suspicious.

I carried Isabella outside toward the waiting car.

My father stepped forward.

"Daniel, stop."

I turned around.

For the first time in my life, I didn't recognize the man standing in front of me.

"Why didn't anyone help her?"

Nobody answered.

My mother's face changed.

She looked away.

That hurt more than any confession could have.

Because silence was sometimes louder than words.

I placed Isabella carefully into the back seat.

My hands were shaking.

Not from fear.

From anger.

The woman I loved was pregnant with our first child.

And somehow, everyone around us knew something I didn't.

My sister, Victoria, walked closer.

"Daniel, you don't understand."

I looked at her.

"Then explain."

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was when I noticed something on the ground near the mansion entrance.

A small piece of paper.

I picked it up.

It was a hospital document.

The name on it was Isabella's.

But the date was wrong.

It was from three months before.

Before we announced the pregnancy.

I looked at my family.

"What is this?"

My father immediately became nervous.

"Give me that."

I moved the paper away.

"No."

The confidence in his voice disappeared.

And that scared me.

Because my father was a man who controlled everything.

He controlled business meetings.

He controlled family decisions.

He controlled every problem before it became a problem.

But now...

He looked afraid.

I opened the document.

Most of it was medical information.

But at the bottom, there was a handwritten note.

A note that had clearly been added later.

"Do not let Daniel find out."

My heart stopped.

I looked at Isabella inside the car.

Her eyes were closed.

But she was awake.

She heard everything.

My father stepped closer.

"Daniel, there are things you need to understand."

I laughed quietly.

Not because anything was funny.

Because I couldn't believe this was happening.

"My wife almost collapsed in front of you."

I pointed at him.

"And your first concern is hiding a piece of paper?"

Nobody answered.

Then Victoria started crying.

"I didn't want this."

I looked at her.

"What didn't you want?"

She covered her mouth.

My mother grabbed her arm.

"Don't say anything."

That sentence changed everything.

Because it confirmed what I already suspected.

They were not protecting me.

They were protecting a secret.

The ambulance arrived ten minutes later.

At the hospital, doctors told me Isabella and the baby were stable.

But they also told me something strange.

Before she collapsed, Isabella had been under extreme stress.

Stress caused by fear.

When the doctor left, I sat beside her bed.

She opened her eyes slowly.

"Daniel..."

I grabbed her hand.

"Tell me everything."

She looked away.

"I was going to."

"When?"

She didn't answer.

"Before or after my family stopped me?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

That was my answer.

I leaned closer.

"Isabella, what are they hiding?"

She looked at me for a long moment.

Then she whispered:

"The baby isn't the secret."

I froze.

"What?"

She squeezed my hand.

"The secret is why they were so afraid when I found out the truth."

I felt a cold feeling move through my body.

"What truth?"

She looked toward the hospital door.

Like she was afraid someone was listening.

Then she whispered:

"Your family didn't want you to know who your father really is."

I stared at her.

"What are you talking about?"

Before she could answer, my phone rang.

It was my father's number.

I almost ignored it.

But something told me to answer.

I pressed the speaker button.

His voice came through.

"Daniel."

"What do you want?"

A long silence.

Then he said:

"You need to come home."

I looked at Isabella.

"No."

My father took a breath.

"There is something in your grandfather's old office."

My eyes narrowed.

"What?"

"A file."

"What file?"

Another silence.

Then my father said:

"The file that explains why Isabella was never supposed to enter this family."

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Isabella started crying.

"Daniel..."

"What?"

She looked terrified.

"Don't go there."

"Why?"

Because she had never been afraid of my family before.

Until now.

She whispered:

"Because the person who left that file..."

She stopped.

Her face turned pale.

"Is someone who was supposed to be dead."

I didn't sleep that night.

I sat beside Isabella's hospital bed.

I watched her breathe.

I watched my unborn child move on the monitor.

And I realized something.

The woman I loved wasn't hiding a betrayal.

She was protecting me from one.

The next morning, I returned to the mansion.

But I didn't enter through the front door.

I went straight to my grandfather's old office.

The door was locked.

It had been untouched for years.

I searched the room.

Nothing.

Until I noticed a small mark on the wooden bookshelf.

A hidden compartment.

Inside was an old envelope.

My name was written on it.

"Daniel."

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was one photograph.

A photograph of my father.

Standing beside a woman I had never seen before.

And behind the photo...

Someone had written a sentence.

"Your father has been lying to you since the day you were born."

I turned the photograph over.

Then I heard a voice behind me.

A voice I knew.

A voice that should not have been there.

"Daniel..."

I slowly turned around.

May you like

And standing in the doorway was the person my family had told me was dead...
