Chapter 5 - The Truth Hidden Behind Four Years of Silence

"Dominic..."

The voice came from the end of the hallway.

Soft.

Familiar.

Impossible.

I watched Dominic freeze.

Not the way someone froze when they were surprised.

The way someone froze when their entire reality was collapsing.

The woman stepped out of the shadows.

Slowly.

Her face was partially hidden by the dim light, but there was no doubt.

It was the same woman from the security footage.

The same woman from the photograph.

The same woman Dominic had just whispered could not be here.

Elena.

Lily's mother.

Alive.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Even Lily stood completely still, holding her stuffed rabbit against her chest.

Then the little girl whispered:

"Mommy?"

The woman's eyes filled with tears.

And that was the moment everything changed.

Because Elena did not look like someone returning to reclaim her old life.

She looked like someone who had been running for years.

Someone who had finally reached the only place she believed could protect her.

Dominic took one step forward.

"Elena."

His voice broke slightly.

Only slightly.

But I heard it.

The man who never showed weakness was struggling to believe what he was seeing.

"You're alive."

Elena looked at him.

"I'm sorry."

That was her first response.

Not an explanation.

Not a defense.

An apology.

Dominic's expression hardened.

"Where have you been?"

She looked down.

"I couldn't come back."

"Four years."

His voice became colder.

"Four years, Elena."

"I know."

"You let me believe you were dead."

Her eyes closed.

"I had no choice."

Those words changed something.

Because Dominic stopped.

He was still angry.

But underneath the anger was something else.

A question.

"What happened?"

Elena looked toward Lily.

Her daughter.

The child who had spent four years believing her mother was gone.

"I was trying to protect her."

Dominic looked at Lily.

Then back at Elena.

"From who?"

The silence answered before she did.

And that silence frightened me.

Because I understood something.

Elena wasn't afraid of Dominic.

She wasn't afraid of coming back.

She was afraid of someone else.

Someone who had been watching.

Someone who knew about me.

Someone who knew about my baby.

I stepped closer.

"Who are you hiding from?"

Elena looked at me.

Her expression changed immediately.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

"You must be Norah."

I felt my stomach tighten.

"You know my name?"

She looked at Dominic.

"You told her nothing?"

Dominic's face darkened.

"Answer her."

Elena looked back at me.

"I know about the baby."

My hand immediately moved over my stomach.

The same protective reaction I had every time I felt afraid.

Dominic noticed.

His eyes moved toward Elena.

"You knew?"

Elena nodded.

"Before she did."

The room became silent.

"What does that mean?"

Elena stepped closer.

"Someone has been watching this house for a long time."

Dominic's expression changed.

"Who?"

"I don't know his name."

"Then how do you know?"

Elena reached inside her coat.

Dominic immediately moved.

A protective instinct.

But Elena slowly removed a small envelope.

"I found this."

She handed it to him.

Dominic opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

His face changed.

I couldn't see the picture clearly.

"What is it?"

He didn't answer.

"Dominic."

He turned the photograph around.

My breath caught.

It was a picture of Lily.

But she wasn't alone.

She was standing with a man I had never seen before.

A man outside the mansion.

A man near the estate gates.

And on the back of the photograph was a date.

Two weeks earlier.

"Who is he?"

Dominic stared at the image.

"I don't know."

Elena shook her head.

"You do."

His eyes lifted.

"What?"

"You've seen him before."

Dominic said nothing.

Elena continued:

"He was there the night I disappeared."

The hallway felt colder.

I looked at Dominic.

"Who was there that night?"

He didn't answer.

And that was the answer.

Someone else was part of the story.

Someone Dominic had forgotten.

Or someone he had tried to forget.

Lily suddenly walked toward Elena.

Everyone froze.

The little girl looked up at the woman.

"Are you really my mommy?"

Elena dropped to her knees.

Tears immediately filled her eyes.

"Yes."

Lily touched her face.

"Why didn't you come home?"

Elena broke.

"I tried."

The little girl hugged her.

And for the first time in years, Lily had her mother back.

I watched Dominic watch them.

There was pain in his face.

Not because Elena was alive.

Because he had lost so much time.

Four years.

Four birthdays.

Four years of watching his daughter ask questions he couldn't answer.

Then Dominic's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

"Who is it?"

He didn't respond.

He answered.

"Speak."

A man's voice came through.

I couldn't hear the words.

Only Dominic's reaction.

The color disappeared from his face.

"What did you say?"

A pause.

Then:

"No."

He looked toward Elena.

Then Lily.

Then me.

The phone slowly lowered.

"What happened?"

Dominic looked at Elena.

"Someone accessed the old security files."

Elena immediately stood.

"Which files?"

"The night you disappeared."

Her face changed.

"That's impossible."

"Why?"

"Because I destroyed them."

The words shocked me.

"You destroyed evidence?"

Elena looked at me.

"No."

Her voice became quiet.

"I destroyed the evidence they wanted me to destroy."

Dominic stepped closer.

"What does that mean?"

Elena looked terrified.

"It means the files you have aren't the originals."

Nobody spoke.

Then Dominic asked:

"Where are the originals?"

Elena looked toward Lily.

Then toward the basement hallway.

I noticed it.

A small movement.

Fear.

"The originals were hidden here."

My heart started racing.

"Here?"

Elena nodded.

"In this house."

Dominic followed her gaze.

"The basement."

I had lived inside the Russo mansion for months.

I knew every room.

Every hallway.

Every door.

Except one.

The basement.

A place nobody entered.

A place the guards never mentioned.

A place Dominic always avoided.

"What's in the basement?"

Elena looked at Dominic.

"The truth."

The word felt heavier than it should have.

Dominic walked toward the basement door.

I followed.

"Norah, stay here."

I stopped.

"No."

His eyes met mine.

"This could be dangerous."

"So could everything else."

He looked like he wanted to argue.

But he didn't.

Because he knew I was right.

Elena stood beside Lily.

"I need to tell you something before you open that door."

Dominic stopped.

"What?"

Her voice shook.

"The person who helped me disappear..."

A pause.

"The person who convinced everyone I was dead..."

She looked directly at him.

"Was someone you trusted."

The basement door stood at the end of the hallway.

Old.

Heavy.

Locked.

Dominic reached for the handle.

Then stopped.

Because from the other side...

someone knocked.

Three slow knocks.

Everyone froze.

Then a voice whispered through the door.

A voice Dominic recognized immediately.

"Dominic..."

May you like

His face went pale.

Because the person behind the basement door was the one person he thought had died with Elena...
