Chapter 2 - The Man Who Found the Hidden Truth

"Norah... why is my child's picture in your pocket?"
Dominic Russo's voice was quiet.
That made it worse.
I had prepared myself for anger.
I had prepared myself for shouting.
I had prepared myself for him to accuse me of betrayal.
But I had never prepared myself for the calm way he looked at me.
Like he was already putting the pieces together.
Like he already knew there was more.
My fingers tightened around the edge of my coat.
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
The ultrasound photo was no longer just a small piece of paper.
It was everything I had tried to protect.
My secret.
My fear.
My baby.
And Dominic was holding it between two fingers like he was afraid that even touching it too hard would break something.
"Norah."
My name sounded different when he said it.
Not like a command.
Not like an order.
Like a question.
I looked toward the hallway.
Toward Lily's room.
The only thing I cared about was that she did not hear this.
"Can we talk somewhere else?"
Dominic did not move.
His eyes stayed on mine.
"How long?"
The question hit harder than anger would have.
I swallowed.
"Dominic..."
"How long have you known?"
I looked down.
My silence answered for me.
His expression changed slightly.
Not rage.
Not disappointment.
Something much harder to understand.
Pain.
"You've known for months."
I forced myself to speak.
"Yes."
The room became completely silent.
Outside, the guards moved around the property.
The security cameras watched every corner.
But inside that room, it felt like there were only two people.
Me.
And the man who could change my entire future with a single decision.
"Five months?" he asked.
I nodded slowly.
His jaw tightened.
"Five months, Norah."
"I was scared."
The words came out before I could stop them.
Dominic looked away for a second.
"Scared of what?"
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn't believe he was asking.
"You really don't know?"
His eyes returned to mine.
"No."
I took a shaky breath.
"I didn't know what you would do."
"What I would do?"
"You are Dominic Russo."
The moment those words left my mouth, I regretted them.
His expression hardened.
"I know exactly who I am."
"Do you?"
The question surprised both of us.
I had spent five months making myself smaller.
Five months avoiding conflict.
Five months remembering that I was only an employee inside his house.
But now the truth was standing between us.
And I was tired of being afraid.
"I know what people say about you," I continued.
Dominic stayed silent.
"They say you control everything around you. They say people don't leave your world unless you allow them to."
His eyes became colder.
"And you believed them."
"I didn't know what to believe."
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then Dominic looked down at the ultrasound photo again.
His thumb brushed the edge of the paper.
A strange expression crossed his face.
Something I had never seen before.
Wonder.
Fear.
Confusion.
"You went to the clinic alone."
It was not a question.
I nodded.
"Yes."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
I looked at him.
Because the answer was too complicated.
Because I had spent every night asking myself the same thing.
Finally, I whispered:
"Because I didn't know if you would see me as a person anymore."
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
"You think I would take your child away?"
I didn't answer.
I didn't need to.
Dominic slowly placed the ultrasound photo on the table.
Then he walked away.
For the first time since I met him, he looked uncertain.
The man who always seemed to have control over everything suddenly looked like someone who had no idea what to do next.
He stopped near the window.
His back was toward me.
"Does Lily know?"
My heart softened for a moment.
"No."
"Does anyone know?"
"No."
"Not even a doctor connected to me?"
"No."
He nodded slowly.
Then he turned back.
"Good."
The word confused me.
"Good?"
"No one else needs to know yet."
I stared at him.
"What does that mean?"
Dominic walked closer.
His voice lowered.
"It means this stays between us until I understand everything."
I felt my chest tighten.
"Until you decide what happens?"
His eyes met mine.
"No."
The answer came immediately.
"Until we decide."
That was the first time he said "we."
And somehow, that scared me more than anger.
Because anger was easy.
Anger meant distance.
But this?
This felt like a door opening.
And I didn't know what was behind it.
The next morning, everything changed.
Not publicly.
Not dramatically.
Nobody in the mansion knew what had happened.
But I noticed.
Dominic noticed everything.
Now he noticed me differently.
He noticed when I struggled carrying groceries.
He noticed when I skipped breakfast because nausea made food impossible.
He noticed when Lily hugged me too tightly and I instinctively protected my stomach.
And every time, I saw something in his expression.
Regret.
One afternoon, I walked into the kitchen and found him standing there.
He had never entered the kitchen before unless Lily was there.
He placed a small bag on the counter.
"What is that?"
"Food."
I blinked.
"I can see that."
His expression remained serious.
"The doctor said you need to eat more."
I froze.
"You talked to my doctor?"
"No."
"Then how do you know?"
"I called the clinic."
My stomach dropped.
"Dominic."
"I needed to know if you and the baby were healthy."
"You can't just do that."
His eyes narrowed.
"I know."
The admission surprised me.
"I know I can't control everything."
The words sounded strange coming from him.
Almost impossible.
Dominic Russo admitting he could not control something.
He looked at the bag.
"I don't know how to do this."
The honesty caught me off guard.
"Do what?"
His eyes lifted.
"Be a father."
I didn't know what to say.
Because the man standing in front of me was not the terrifying figure people whispered about.
He was a man who had built walls around himself so high that even he didn't know how to climb over them.
Then Lily ran into the kitchen.
"Dad!"
Dominic immediately changed.
His shoulders relaxed.
His expression softened.
She jumped into his arms.
"Look!"
She held up a drawing.
It was messy.
Colorful.
A picture of three people holding hands.
Dominic looked at it.
"Who is this?"
"Me."
She pointed.
"This is Dad."
Then she pointed at the third person.
"This is Norah."
I stopped breathing.
Lily smiled.
"Because Norah is family."
Dominic looked at me.
Something passed between us.
Something neither of us said.
Later that night, I couldn't sleep.
I sat on the edge of my bed, looking at the ultrasound photo.
I still didn't know if trusting Dominic was the right choice.
I still didn't know what his world would mean for my child.
But for the first time, I wondered if maybe I had been wrong about one thing.
Maybe Dominic Russo was not afraid of becoming a father.
Maybe he was afraid of losing one.
The thought had barely formed when I heard a sound outside my bedroom.
A soft movement.
Then a pause.
I stood slowly.
My heart started racing.
"Who's there?"
No answer.
I looked toward the door.
The handle moved.
Slowly.
I stepped back.
The door opened slightly.
A small envelope slid across the floor.
Then disappeared shadows moved away.
I waited several seconds before walking closer.
My hands trembled as I picked it up.
There was no name.
No address.
Only three words written on the front.
FOR NORAH ONLY.
I opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
My blood turned cold.
It was a picture of me.
Taken at the clinic.
Someone had been watching me.
And beneath the photograph was one sentence:
"Dominic doesn't know the whole truth."
I stared at the words.
Then my phone, which had been silent for months, suddenly lit up with a message from an unknown number.
I opened it.
May you like
The message contained only four words.
"Ask him about Lily's mother."
