Chapter 3 - The Truth Beneath the Floorboards

Sarah sat in the cold cell for two days.

Her lawyer, Arthur Vance, finally arrived.

Arthur was Julian’s estranged uncle.

He set the USB drive on the visiting table.

“Where did you get this, Sarah?”

“Julian put it in my coat before he fled.”

Arthur plugged the drive into his laptop.

A video recording appeared on the screen.

The timestamp showed it was filmed three days ago.

Julian sat in a dark room.

His face was bruised and pale.

He began speaking directly to the camera.

“If you are watching this, Marcus found us.”

Sarah leaned closer to the monitor.

“Marcus has blackmailed me for seven years,” Julian said.

“He caused Clara’s car crash.”

“He wanted her inheritance money.”

“Clara survived, but she went into hiding.”

Julian wiped a tear from his eye.

“I brought Toby to Sarah to keep him safe.”

“Marcus threatened to kill Toby if I spoke.”

“I took the fifty thousand dollars as evidence.”

“The bills are marked with Marcus’s private safe numbers.”

“I planted the box in Sarah’s closet so police would search it.”

“I surrendered so Marcus would drop his guard.”

“The real proof is hidden inside Toby’s bed frame.”

The video ended.

Arthur looked up at Sarah.

“If this video is real, Marcus is guilty of extortion.”

“We need to get to Toby’s bed right now,” Sarah said.

Arthur stood up immediately.

“I’ll call the head prosecutor.”

Three hours later, officers escorted Sarah back to her house.

Detective Miller held a flashlight inside Toby’s bedroom.

He unscrewed the wooden support beam under the bed.

A thick leather journal fell onto the carpet.

Inside were original financial receipts.

They proved Marcus had stolen millions from Clara’s trust.

They also contained recorded threats from Marcus.

Detective Miller flipped through the pages.

His expression changed entirely.

“Julian was telling the truth,” Miller admitted.

“He was protecting the boy from Marcus.”

Sarah grabbed the detective’s arm.

“Where is my son now?”

“Marcus took him to his estate downtown.”

“We’re getting a warrant right now.”

“I’m coming with you,” Sarah demanded.

Ten police cars drove toward the Vance estate.

Sirens echoed through the quiet night air.

The cars pulled up to the large brick mansion.

Officers breached the front double doors.

Marcus stood in the grand foyer.

He was packing a large leather suitcase.

Toby sat on a nearby sofa, crying softly.

“Marcus Vance!” Detective Miller shouted.

“Put your hands where we can see them!”

Marcus dropped his suitcase.

“This is my property!”

“You’re under arrest for extortion and kidnapping,” Miller said.

Officers pinned Marcus to the floor.

The steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists.

Marcus glared at Sarah as he was led away.

“You won't get away with this!” Marcus yelled.

Sarah ignored him completely.

She ran across the marble floor.

“Toby!”

The little boy looked up.

He opened his arms wide.

“Mommy!”

Sarah dropped to her knees and hugged him tightly.

She buried her face in his shoulder.

“I’m so sorry, sweetie.”

“I’m so sorry.”

Toby held onto her sweater.

“I knew you would come back for me.”

A quiet voice called out from the hallway doorway.

A woman stepped into the light.

She had pale skin and tired brown eyes.

It was Clara.

Sarah stood up slowly, keeping Toby beside her.

Clara looked at the boy with tears in her eyes.

“He looks just like his mother,” Clara whispered.

Sarah’s voice broke.

“Clara?”

Clara nodded slowly.

“Julian kept me safe for seven years.”

“He hid me in a small cabin upstate.”

“He told me you were a wonderful mother to Toby.”

Clara stepped closer to Sarah.

She reached out and gently touched Toby’s hand.

“I came back to end this.”

“I want you to keep raising him, Sarah.”

Sarah stared at Clara in disbelief.

“You’re his biological mother.”

Clara smiled through her tears.

“You were the one who held him when he was sick.”

“You were the one who loved him every single day.”

“You are his mother.”

Toby looked up at Sarah, then at Clara.

“Can I have two moms?” Toby asked softly.

Clara laughed and rubbed his hair.

“Yes, sweetie. You can.”

Six months later, the sun shone over Sarah’s backyard.

A new wooden bench sat under the large oak tree.

Julian stood near the porch, painting the wooden railing.

He had served three months for obstruction.

He was working hard every day to rebuild Sarah’s trust.

He respected her boundaries completely.

They took small steps forward together every week.

Clara sat on the porch steps, smiling as she read a book.

Toby ran across the grass holding a paper airplane.

He threw it high into the warm afternoon air.

The plane glided smoothly and landed near Sarah’s feet.

Sarah picked up the toy and handed it back to him.

Toby wrapped his arms around her waist.

“I love you, Mom.”

Sarah kissed the top of his head.

“I love you too, my sweet boy.”

She held his hand tight as they walked toward the house together.
