Chapter 1 - The Silver Locket in the Lockbox

“You aren't my real mother.”
Seven-year-old Toby stared directly into Sarah’s eyes.
He did not shout.
He did not cry.
His small hands clutched a rusted metal box.
Sarah dropped the laundry basket.
Towels scattered across the hardwood floor.
Her heart hammered violently against her ribs.
“Toby, what are you holding?”
The boy stepped backward toward the open closet.
“My real mom gave me this.”
Sarah felt the room spin.
She had given birth to Toby seven years ago.
She remembered the hospital lights.
She remembered hearing his first desperate cry.
Her husband, Julian, walked into the hallway.
He stopped in his tracks.
His face turned completely pale.
“Where did you find that box, Toby?”
Julian’s voice sounded tight and unnatural.
Toby pointed a shaking finger at the floorboards.
“Underneath your office desk.”
Sarah looked from her son to her husband.
Julian refused to meet her eyes.
He reached out to grab the box.
“Give that to me right now.”
Toby pulled the metal container to his chest.
“No!”
The rusted clasp snapped open.
Objects spilled onto the rug.
A gold pocket watch tumbled out.
An old silver locket clicked open on impact.
A yellowed birth certificate slid across the wood.
Sarah dropped to her knees.
She picked up the birth certificate first.
Her eyes scanned the crisp blue ink.
The baby’s name was Toby.
The date of birth matched her son's exact birthday.
The mother’s name was listed as Clara Vance.
Sarah breathed heavily.
Clara was Julian’s sister.
Clara had died in a car crash seven years ago.
Sarah looked at the photograph inside the silver locket.
It showed Clara holding a newborn baby in a hospital.
The newborn had a distinct red mark on his left wrist.
Toby had that exact same mark.
Sarah’s hands trembled violently.
“Julian, what is this?”
Julian took a step back toward the stairs.
“Sarah, please listen to me.”
“Is this Clara’s child?”
Julian swallowed hard.
“You don't understand the whole story.”
“Answer me!”
Toby began to sob quietly.
“Mommy, why is Daddy scared?”
Sarah pulled Toby into her arms.
Her mind raced through seven years of memories.
Seven years of raised smiles.
Seven years of sleepless nights.
Seven years of unconditional love.
Was her entire life built on a lie?
Julian backed toward the front door.
“I did it to protect our family.”
“Protect us from what?”
“From the truth about Clara’s accident.”
Sarah stood up slowly.
She kept Toby behind her back.
“Clara died in a rainstorm.”
“That's what you told everyone.”
Julian reached for his coat.
“The police missed something back then.”
“What did they miss?”
“Clara wasn't alone in that car.”
Sarah gasped.
“Who was with her?”
Julian did not answer.
A heavy knock echoed through the front door.
Julian froze in place.
He looked out the side window.
His face drained of all color.
“He found us,” Julian whispered.
Sarah walked to the window.
A black sedan sat in the driveway.
A tall man in an expensive suit stepped out.
He walked up the porch steps.
Sarah recognized his harsh blue eyes immediately.
It was Marcus Vance.
Marcus was Clara’s ex-husband.
He was a powerful local judge.
Marcus had disappeared seven years ago after the trial.
Julian grabbed his car keys off the table.
“Sarah, do not open that door.”
“Why is Marcus here?”
“He thinks I stole his inheritance.”
“Did you?”
Julian ran toward the back door.
“Look inside the locket’s secret lining!”
The back door slammed shut.
Julian disappeared into the night.
The front doorbell rang again.
It rang louder this time.
Toby squeezed Sarah’s waist tightly.
“Is that man going to take me away?”
Sarah looked down at the locket on the floor.
She pried open the silver casing with her fingernail.
A folded piece of paper dropped out.
It was a hand-written note from Clara.

The date on the note was three days ago.
Clara was still alive.
