Chapter 4 - The Room That Held My Father's Secret

The whisper came again.

"Evelyn..."

I froze.

Every person inside the wedding hall heard it.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The screens continued showing the same image.

A wooden door.

Old.

Locked.

Waiting.

My eyes stayed on the screen.

Because I knew that voice.

Not because I recognized the person.

But because the voice sounded like someone who had been waiting years to say my name.

Adrian stepped in front of me.

"Evelyn, don't."

I looked at him.

"Don't what?"

His expression was filled with fear.

"Don't open something you don't understand."

I almost laughed.

"That is exactly what everyone has been telling me my entire life."

The room went silent.

My mother lowered her head.

Charles looked away.

Even Adrian had no answer.

I walked toward the screen.

The video feed showed the wooden door from a security camera.

At the bottom of the image was a timestamp.

The recording was live.

Not old.

Not a memory.

Someone was watching that door right now.

"Where is this?" I asked.

Nobody responded.

I turned around.

"Where is this room?"

Charles finally spoke.

"It was your father's office."

My heart tightened.

"My father's office?"

He nodded slowly.

"It was in the old Carter estate."

The name alone made my mother close her eyes.

I had heard about that house my entire childhood.

The place where I was born.

The place my father disappeared from.

The place my mother sold after his disappearance.

At least, that was what she told me.

"You said that house was gone."

My mother looked at me.

"It was supposed to be."

"Supposed to be?"

She didn't answer.

I walked closer to her.

"Mom, what does that mean?"

Her lips trembled.

"It means your father planned for this."

My eyebrows tightened.

"Planned for what?"

"For the day you would find out the truth."

The words hit me harder than I expected.

My father had left something behind.

Not for the police.

Not for his friends.

For me.

I looked back at the screen.

The wooden door remained closed.

Waiting.

"I want to go there."

Adrian immediately shook his head.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

I noticed something.

Not fear.

Not hesitation.

Panic.

"Why are you so afraid of that room?"

He didn't answer.

"Adrian."

He took a breath.

"Because my father spent years trying to find what was inside."

I stared at him.

"And?"

"And he never found it."

The answer made no sense.

"If he couldn't find it, how can we?"

Adrian looked at the screen.

"Because your father wanted you to."

Nobody spoke.

For the first time, I realized something terrifying.

Maybe my father hadn't disappeared because he lost.

Maybe he disappeared because he was hiding.

And maybe he had been waiting for me to finish what he started.

An hour later, I was standing outside the old Carter estate.

The wedding dress was still on me.

The veil was still attached to my hair.

I looked ridiculous.

A bride walking into a forgotten house instead of dancing at her reception.

But I didn't care.

My life had changed in one night.

The woman who raised me had lied.

The man I married knew secrets.

And my missing father had left me a path to follow.

Adrian parked beside me.

He turned off the engine but didn't get out immediately.

"Are you sure?"

I looked at him.

"No."

That surprised him.

"I don't know what I'm going to find."

I looked at the house.

"But I know I can't pretend anymore."

He nodded.

Then he opened the door.

Charles and my mother followed behind us.

I noticed something strange.

My mother had refused to come at first.

But when Adrian mentioned the basement office, she changed her mind.

That meant one thing.

She wasn't coming to protect me.

She was coming because she was afraid of what I would discover.

The front door was already open.

I stopped.

"Who opened it?"

Nobody answered.

Adrian looked around.

"Nobody should have access."

I stepped inside.

The house smelled old.

Not abandoned.

Old.

Like someone had been living there recently.

Dust covered the furniture.

But there were fresh footprints on the floor.

My mother saw them too.

Her face changed.

"Someone has been here."

Charles quietly said:

"Someone has always been here."

I looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

But he walked away.

Avoiding another question.

I followed the footprints.

They led toward my father's office.

The same room shown on the screen.

The door was at the end of the hallway.

A heavy wooden door with a metal lock.

I reached for the handle.

It didn't move.

Locked.

Adrian stepped forward.

"I have the key."

I looked at him.

"You have a key to my father's office?"

His expression changed.

"I found it years ago."

"Where?"

He looked uncomfortable.

"In my father's belongings."

My stomach tightened.

Another secret.

Another thing he never told me.

He unlocked the door.

The moment it opened, everyone became silent.

The room looked untouched.

A desk.

Bookshelves.

Old photographs.

Everything exactly as it had been twelve years ago.

On the desk was a small wooden box.

My name was written on it.

"EVELYN."

I walked toward it slowly.

My hands shook.

I opened the box.

Inside was a photograph.

A picture of me as a baby.

I had never seen it before.

On the back was handwriting.

My father's handwriting.

"If you found this, it means they failed."

I turned the photo over.

There was another message.

"The person you trust most knows why I disappeared."

I stopped.

Everyone was behind me.

I didn't need to turn around.

Because I already knew.

The message wasn't about a stranger.

It was about someone standing in this room.

Someone I loved.

Someone who had been lying.

I looked at Adrian.

He looked at my mother.

My mother looked at the floor.

Then the laptop in my hand received another notification.

A new file appeared.

No password.

No protection.

Only one title.

THE LAST NIGHT OF RICHARD CARTER.

I opened it.

The video started.

My father appeared again.

But this time he wasn't alone.

He was sitting in this exact room.

And someone was standing behind him.

Someone whose face was hidden.

My father looked directly into the camera.

"Evelyn, if you are watching this, I need you to understand something."

He paused.

His eyes filled with sadness.

"The person who betrayed me was not the person you think."

My breathing stopped.

Then he continued.

"They were protecting you."

The video glitched.

The hidden person behind him moved closer.

My father's face changed.

Like he realized someone had entered the room.

Then he whispered:

"You're too late..."

The screen went black.

A final message appeared.

THE CAMERA WAS TURNED OFF 30 SECONDS AFTER THIS RECORDING.

I looked around the office.

Because the message wasn't talking about twelve years ago.

It was talking about now.

Then I heard a sound behind the wall.

A quiet knock.

Three times.

Everyone froze.

Adrian stepped closer to the hidden panel beside the bookshelf.

His voice barely came out.

"That wall..."

He touched the edge.

"It wasn't there before."

The panel slowly moved.

A hidden door appeared.

May you like

And from inside the darkness, someone whispered my name again.

"Evelyn..."
