Chapter 13 - The Child in the Dark

“Mom?”
The voice came from behind me.
A small voice.
Shaky.
Familiar.
I turned.
A little girl stood in the doorway.
She couldn't have been more than six years old.
Her dark hair fell over her shoulders.
Her eyes were wet.
Around her neck was a tiny silver necklace.
The same necklace I had seen in the photograph.
I couldn't breathe.
The girl stared at me.
Then she whispered:
“Are you really my mother?”
Everything inside me broke.
I stepped toward her.
“What's your name?”
She hesitated.
“Camila.”
My knees weakened.
Sofía began crying.
Isabela covered her mouth.
Iván looked away.
I stared at the little girl.
“Camila…”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
I wanted to touch her.
But I was afraid.
Afraid that if I reached out, she would disappear.
Afraid that this was another lie.
Rafael stepped forward.
“She belongs to us.”
“No.”
My voice came out stronger than I expected.
“She belongs to herself.”
Rafael smiled.
“You still don't understand.”
I looked at him.
“Then explain it.”
He raised his phone.
“The records say she was born eleven years ago.”
I stared at Camila.
Eleven years.
That didn't make sense.
The girl looked six.
Maybe seven.
Rafael smiled.
“Because the records were altered.”
“Why?”
“To hide her age.”
“Why hide her age?”
“Because your father didn't want anyone to know she existed.”
Sofía stepped forward.
“He wanted her gone.”
Rafael looked at her.
“You failed.”
“You almost killed her.”
“But I didn't.”
He turned toward the girl.
“She survived.”
I moved between them.
“Stay away from her.”
Rafael laughed.
“Protective already.”
Iván stepped beside me.
“You're not taking her.”
Rafael looked at him.
“You've been saying that for eleven years.”
I turned sharply.
“Iván.”
He closed his eyes.
“Valeria…”
“You knew where she was.”
“I knew she existed.”
“You knew.”
“I found her when she was three.”
My heart stopped.
“Three?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“A private facility.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because your father was still alive.”
“He died eight years ago.”
“I know.”
“Then why didn't you tell me after?”
“Because the people protecting him didn't disappear when he died.”
I looked at Rafael.
“You?”
He smiled.
“Among others.”
I felt sick.
“Why was my daughter hidden?”
Sofía answered.
“Because she was the only child your father couldn't control.”
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?”
“She had the wrong blood.”
“The wrong blood?”
“She wasn't supposed to be born.”
I looked at Camila.
“Why?”
Sofía's voice trembled.
“Because your father had ordered me to terminate the pregnancy.”
My breath stopped.
“You were pregnant with her?”
“Yes.”
“But I don't remember.”
“You weren't supposed to.”
I looked at Iván.
He lowered his head.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“You knew I was pregnant.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Camila was my daughter.”
“Yes.”
“You knew my father wanted her dead.”
“Yes.”
“And you married me anyway.”
“I loved you.”
The words felt cruel.
“You loved me while hiding my own child.”
“I thought I could protect both of you.”
“You couldn't.”
“No.”
I turned away.
Camila was still standing in the doorway.
She was watching me.
Not Rafael.
Not Iván.
Me.
I crouched down.
“Camila.”
She slowly approached.
“Do you know who I am?”
She nodded.
“You're my mother.”
I felt tears run down my face.
“Who told you?”
“Grandma.”
I looked at Sofía.
“Grandma?”
Camila nodded.
“She came to see me.”
My heart stopped.
“When?”
“Yesterday.”
I looked at Sofía.
“You saw her?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“At the house.”
“Which house?”
“Calle Morelos.”
I looked at Marcos.
He closed his eyes.
“That house isn't abandoned.”
“No,” Sofía said.
“It was where we kept her.”
“Who?”
“Camila.”
My heart pounded.
“Why would you keep her there?”
“Because it was the only place your father never searched.”
I looked at my daughter.
“How long have you been there?”
“Most of my life.”
I felt sick.
“Who took care of you?”
“A woman named Elena.”
I looked toward Elena.
She was crying.
“You raised her?”
Elena nodded.
“For six years.”
“Why?”
“Because I owed your mother.”
“What happened six years ago?”
Elena looked down.
“She was moved.”
“Where?”
“To another facility.”
“Why?”
“Because someone found the house.”
“Who?”
She looked toward Rafael.
“He did.”
Rafael smiled.
“I found it.”
“And you took her?”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
Rafael didn't answer.
Camila suddenly grabbed my hand.
“Mom.”
I looked at her.
“Yes?”
“Don't let him take me again.”
My heart shattered.
I pulled her against me.
“No one is taking you.”
Rafael watched us.
“You don't know what you're promising.”
“I don't care.”
“You should.”
He lifted his phone.
A video appeared.
A young version of me.
Unconscious.
Lying in a hospital bed.
My mother stood beside me.
Pregnant.
I stared at the screen.
“What is this?”
Rafael smiled.
“Your missing years.”
I watched.
My younger self was connected to machines.
Sofía was crying.
A doctor stood beside her.
Then the camera moved toward a newborn baby.
Camila.
My daughter.
The recording continued.
My father entered the room.
He looked at Sofía.
“You will tell her the child died.”
Sofía shook her head.
“No.”
He slapped her.
The video ended.
I couldn't breathe.
“That was real?”
Sofía nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why was I in the hospital?”
“You were injured.”
“By whom?”
She hesitated.
“Your father.”
My hands tightened around Camila.
“Why?”
“Because you tried to take her.”
I looked at Iván.
“You were there.”
“Yes.”
“You saw him hurt me.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you stop him?”
His eyes filled with tears.
“I tried.”
“You failed.”
“Yes.”
Silence.
Then Marcos spoke.
“There's something you still don't know.”
I turned.
“What?”
He looked at Rafael.
“The video wasn't supposed to exist.”
Rafael's expression changed.
Marcos continued.
“Your father didn't record that night.”
“Then who did?”
Marcos looked at Elena.
She stepped forward.
“I did.”
Everyone turned toward her.
“I hid the camera.”
“Why?”
“Because I knew someday someone would need proof.”
I stared at her.
“You knew all along.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you lie?”
“Because I was afraid.”
I looked at Camila.
She was still holding my hand.
I squeezed it.
“I won't be afraid anymore.”
Rafael smiled.
“You should be.”
He pressed something on his phone.
A loud alarm sounded.
The building shook.
Lights flickered.
Then the emergency doors opened.
Several police officers rushed into the corridor.
I froze.
Rafael raised his hands.
“I'm not the one you want.”
The officers moved past him.
Their guns pointed directly at Iván.
One officer shouted:
“Iván Cárdenas! Step away from the woman and the child!”
Iván froze.
“What?”
The officer raised a photograph.
“We have an arrest warrant.”
I looked at Iván.
“For what?”
The officer answered:
“For the disappearance of Sofía Lara Medina and the unlawful transfer of two children.”
Iván looked at me.
“Valeria, listen to me.”
I stepped back.
The officer grabbed his arms.
Iván didn't resist.
But as they pulled him away, he looked directly at me.
“There is one thing your mother never told you.”
I stared.
“What?”
He swallowed.
“The woman you think is Sofía…”
My mother froze.
Iván's eyes moved toward her.
“She isn't Sofía.”
The room went silent.
Sofía's face went white.
May you like
And then the little girl beside me whispered—
“Mom… why does Grandma have two different names?”
