Chapter 4 - The Family That Was Erased

The woman standing at the ballroom entrance looked like she had been running for her life.

Her hands were shaking.

The document she held was pressed tightly against her chest.

And the moment her eyes met mine, I knew she wasn't a stranger.

Not because I recognized her.

Because she recognized me.

The entire room watched as she slowly walked closer.

Matteo stepped between us.

"Who are you?"

The woman's eyes moved to him.

Then back to me.

"My name is Claire Bennett."

She swallowed.

"And I knew Elena's father."

My heart stopped.

I had spent years trying to understand why my father disappeared.

Not died.

Disappeared.

That was the word everyone avoided.

When I was twelve years old, my father left home one night.

My mother told me he had gone away for work.

Then weeks became months.

Months became years.

And eventually, people stopped asking questions.

Everyone accepted that he was gone.

Everyone except me.

Because I remembered something.

The night before he disappeared, he had looked terrified.

Not sad.

Not angry.

Terrified.

Like someone was coming for him.

Claire reached the table and placed the document down.

"I didn't want you to find this."

I stared at her.

"Then why did you bring it?"

Her eyes filled with guilt.

"Because they already know you found the numbers."

The room went silent.

Matteo looked at his father.

"Who is they?"

His father didn't answer.

That worried me more than anything.

A powerful man could lie.

A powerful man could manipulate.

But silence meant he was afraid.

Matteo picked up the document.

The first page was covered with legal information.

My name.

My birth date.

My father's signature.

And a company name I had never seen before.

Bellandi Private Holdings.

I looked at Matteo.

"Why is my father's name connected to your family?"

He didn't answer.

Because he was reading faster.

Page after page.

His expression became darker.

"What is this?"

Claire looked at me.

"Your father wasn't just an accountant."

I frowned.

"Yes, he was."

"No."

Her voice was quiet.

"He was the person who built the financial system behind the Bellandi empire."

I felt confused.

My father had never talked about powerful people.

He had never worn expensive clothes.

He lived a simple life.

He fixed things around the house.

He cooked dinner.

He helped me with homework.

He didn't seem like someone connected to one of Chicago's most powerful families.

But Claire continued.

"Your father discovered something."

Matteo looked up.

"What?"

She hesitated.

"The money wasn't being stolen from the Bellandi Foundation."

I looked at the documents again.

"Then what was happening?"

Claire looked at Victoria.

And Victoria immediately stepped back.

"The money was being used to build a private operation."

Matteo's expression changed.

"What operation?"

Claire lowered her voice.

"One designed to control people inside the Bellandi family."

Nobody spoke.

The orchestra members looked uncomfortable.

The guests who remained inside the ballroom looked terrified.

Because everyone understood something.

This was bigger than stolen money.

Much bigger.

Matteo turned toward his father.

"You knew?"

His father looked down.

"I suspected."

"You suspected?"

Matteo's voice became colder.

"You disappeared."

His father didn't respond.

"You let me believe you were dead."

"I was trying to protect you."

Matteo laughed once.

But there was no humor.

"Protect me?"

His eyes hardened.

"You let me bury you."

The words hit the room.

Even Claire looked away.

I watched Matteo carefully.

Everyone saw him as a powerful man.

A man without weakness.

But standing there, facing his father, he wasn't a mafia boss.

He was just a son who had spent six years mourning someone who was still alive.

Then Victoria spoke.

"Enough."

Everyone looked at her.

She stepped forward.

"This is exactly what I warned everyone about."

Matteo looked at her.

"Explain."

Victoria pointed at me.

"She came here with fake evidence."

I almost laughed.

"Fake?"

She ignored me.

"She knew this would create chaos."

Matteo stared at her.

"And how would she know my father would appear?"

Victoria stopped.

Only for a second.

But Matteo noticed.

I noticed.

Everyone noticed.

Because that was the mistake.

She knew too much.

Matteo walked closer.

"Victoria."

Her face softened.

"Matteo, please."

"No."

His voice was calm.

"Answer the question."

The room held its breath.

"How did you know what was going to happen tonight?"

Victoria looked around.

For the first time, she had no perfect answer.

"I..."

She stopped.

Then her eyes moved toward the exit.

A small movement.

But I saw it.

She was looking for a way out.

Matteo saw it too.

"Nobody leaves."

Two guards closed the doors.

Victoria stared at him.

"You don't trust me?"

Matteo didn't answer.

That was the answer.

I looked down at the documents again.

Something caught my attention.

A signature.

At the bottom of one page.

My father's.

But beside it was another signature.

One I recognized.

Victoria's.

My breathing changed.

I touched the paper.

"Matteo."

He looked at me.

"Look."

He took the document.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

Victoria noticed.

And for the first time all night...

She looked truly afraid.

"What is that?" Matteo asked.

Nobody answered.

So I did.

"Your fiancée signed the same agreement my father signed before he disappeared."

The silence was immediate.

Victoria shook her head.

"No."

I turned the page.

"Yes."

Matteo looked at her.

"Why?"

She stared at him.

"I can explain."

Again.

Those words.

I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

Because I knew what happened next.

People who had nothing to hide usually said:

"I didn't do it."

People who were trapped said:

"I can explain."

Matteo picked up the flash drive his father brought.

He looked at Claire.

"What's inside?"

Claire's face became pale.

"The original files."

"What original files?"

"The ones your father copied before he disappeared."

Matteo looked at the drive.

Then at me.

"Why would your father leave these with my family?"

I didn't know.

But Claire did.

She reached into her bag.

She removed another photograph.

She placed it on the table.

I picked it up.

And everything inside me froze.

The picture showed my father.

Standing beside Matteo's father.

But that wasn't what shocked me.

It was the child standing between them.

A little girl.

A girl holding my father's hand.

A girl wearing a necklace I recognized.

My necklace.

The one my mother gave me before she died.

I looked at Claire.

"Who is she?"

Claire didn't answer.

Matteo looked at the photograph.

His expression changed.

Because he knew something I didn't.

"Matteo?"

He slowly turned the picture over.

There was writing on the back.

Only one sentence.

My hands started shaking as I read it.

"Protect Elena because she is the last Bellandi heir."

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then Matteo's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

"You're too late."

Matteo tightened his grip.

"Who is this?"

The voice replied:

"The person who has been watching Elena since she was born."

A pause.

Then:

"Check the basement of your father's old house."

Matteo froze.

Because his father's old house had been abandoned for six years.

And nobody should have been able to enter.

Then the voice whispered one final sentence.

"The person you buried is not the only one who came back."

The call ended.

Matteo looked at me.

Then at his father.

Then toward the ballroom doors.

May you like

Because at that exact moment...

the security camera feed from the old Bellandi house turned on by itself.
