Chapter 3 - The Woman In The Photograph

The voice behind me whispered:

"Claire."

I froze.

I didn't need to turn around to know who it was.

Because there was only one person in the world who said my name like that.

Like it was both a warning and an apology.

Adam.

I slowly turned.

He was standing in the doorway.

His face was different.

Not the confident husband who walked through expensive parties smiling.

Not the man who told me everything would be okay.

This was the face of someone who knew the truth had finally caught up with him.

"What are you doing here?"

I asked.

Adam looked at the photograph in my hand.

Then at the envelope.

Then back at me.

For a moment, he said nothing.

And that silence told me more than words ever could.

"You followed me."

I whispered.

Adam stepped inside and closed the door behind him.

"I came here because I knew you would find this."

My heart tightened.

"You knew?"

He looked away.

"I hoped you wouldn't."

I stared at him.

The anger inside me was growing.

Not because he had secrets.

Everyone had secrets.

It was because he had spent six months watching me grieve over something he knew wasn't gone.

"You let me believe my mother's bracelet was lost."

Adam swallowed.

"Claire..."

"No."

My voice became sharper.

"You watched me search every box. You watched me cry because I thought I lost the last thing she gave me."

His expression changed.

Guilt.

Real guilt.

"I didn't know how to tell you."

I laughed quietly.

A painful laugh.

"That's what people say when they choose a lie."

Adam looked at the photograph.

"You don't understand what that picture means."

I lifted it.

"Then explain."

He hesitated.

And that hesitation made me angry.

Because I was tired of waiting.

"I deserve the truth."

Adam took a deep breath.

"Your mother wasn't the only person who owned that bracelet."

I stared at him.

"What?"

He stepped closer.

"Your mother and another woman were connected."

I looked down at the photograph again.

The woman standing beside my mother looked familiar.

Not because I had met her.

But because there was something about her face.

Something I couldn't place.

"Who is she?"

Adam didn't answer immediately.

"Her name is Rebecca Lane."

My blood went cold.

"Lane?"

He nodded.

"Sophie's mother."

The room suddenly felt smaller.

I looked at the photograph.

My mother.

Rebecca Lane.

The bracelet.

All connected.

"No."

I shook my head.

"Sophie said nothing."

Adam looked at me.

"Sophie doesn't know everything."

"Then why is she wearing my mother's bracelet?"

He didn't answer.

Again.

That silence.

I stepped closer.

"Adam."

My voice dropped.

"Why?"

He looked at the floor.

"Because your mother gave it to her."

The words hit me like a physical blow.

I stared at him.

Impossible.

My mother would never.

Not without telling me.

Not with something so important.

"You're lying."

"I'm not."

"Then why did you tell me it was lost?"

Adam closed his eyes.

And for the first time, I saw how tired he looked.

"Because your mother asked me to."

I couldn't move.

The room went silent.

"My mother?"

Adam nodded.

"Before she died."

I felt my fingers tighten around the photograph.

"When?"

"Three days before the accident."

My heart stopped.

Because that was a detail I had never known.

Everyone told me my mother died suddenly.

There was no warning.

No final conversation.

No goodbye.

Just a phone call.

A hospital.

And then my entire world changed.

"What did she say?"

Adam looked at me.

"She told me if anything happened to her, I needed to keep the bracelet away from you."

I stared at him.

"Why?"

He looked toward the window.

"Because she knew someone was looking for it."

A chill moved through me.

"Who?"

Adam didn't answer.

Instead, he reached into his jacket pocket.

And pulled out a small object.

A key.

Old.

Silver.

With a tiny engraving.

My mother's initials.

C.A.R.

"I found this inside the bracelet."

My eyes widened.

"What?"

"The clasp was modified."

Adam placed the key in my hand.

"Your mother hid something."

I looked at the key.

My mind raced.

All these years.

All those memories.

My mother had been hiding something from me.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Adam looked away.

"Because I promised her."

I stared at him.

"You promised my mother."

"Yes."

"And you chose her secret over your wife."

The words hurt him.

I saw it.

But I didn't care.

Not anymore.

Because my entire marriage was suddenly filled with questions.

"How long have you known Sophie?"

Adam didn't answer.

That was enough.

"Adam."

His eyes met mine.

"How long?"

He sighed.

"Six years."

I felt my stomach drop.

Six years.

Sophie wasn't some random woman from a wedding.

She wasn't a stranger.

She had been in our lives.

For years.

"You knew her before we met?"

He nodded.

"Yes."

"How?"

Adam stayed quiet.

And then he said something I never expected.

"She was there the night your mother died."

I couldn't breathe.

The photograph slipped slightly in my hand.

"What did you just say?"

Adam looked at me.

"Sophie knows what happened that night."

I felt tears burning in my eyes.

"My mother died in an accident."

Adam didn't respond.

And that scared me more than anything.

Because if he believed that...

He would have said it.

He would have defended it.

Instead, he looked like someone carrying a truth he hated.

"Tell me."

My voice shook.

"What really happened?"

Adam opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

Not fear this time.

Panic.

He answered.

"Hello?"

I watched him listen.

His expression slowly disappeared.

Then he looked at me.

"Claire..."

I stepped back.

"Who is it?"

Adam didn't answer.

The person on the other end said something.

Something that made his hand tighten around the phone.

"What do you mean she's awake?"

My heart stopped.

Adam looked at me.

And for the first time since this began...

He looked afraid for me.

Not for himself.

"Claire, we need to leave."

I didn't move.

"Who is awake?"

Adam lowered the phone.

His voice was barely a whisper.

"The woman who was supposed to have died with your mother."

I stared at him.

The world around me disappeared.

Because there was only one question in my mind.

If that woman was alive...

Why had everyone spent years telling me she was dead?

I stepped toward Adam.

"Who is she?"

He looked at the photograph.

Then at me.

And said a name I had never heard before.

A name that changed everything.

"Your mother's sister."

I couldn't speak.

My mother never had a sister.

At least...

That was what I had been told.

Then Adam's phone received a new message.

He looked down.

His face turned completely pale.

May you like

The message contained only four words.

"She remembers everything, Claire."
