Chapter 6 - The Recording That Changed Everything

"Roman, if you are watching this, it means your mother found you before I could..."
The video stopped.
The screen froze on his father's terrified face.
For several seconds, Roman didn't move.
The room around him disappeared.
The footsteps outside.
The darkness.
The danger.
Everything became distant.
There was only one thing in his mind.
His father had been afraid.
Not angry.
Not powerful.
Afraid.
Roman had spent his entire life remembering his father as a strong man.
A man who never showed weakness.
A man who taught him that fear was something other people felt.
But the person on that screen looked like someone who knew he was running out of time.
"Play it again."
Claire looked at him.
"Roman..."
"Play it."
His voice was quiet.
But there was something different in it.
Not anger.
Not confusion.
Determination.
Claire pressed the button.
The video restarted.
His father's face appeared again.
"Roman, if you are watching this, it means your mother found you before I could."
The older man's eyes moved away from the camera.
Like he was checking if someone was nearby.
"I don't have much time."
A younger Roman appeared in his memory.
Twelve years old.
Standing beside his father.
Believing his father could fix anything.
The video continued.
"There are things I kept from you because I thought hiding them would protect you."
His father took a deep breath.
"I was wrong."
Roman stared at the screen.
His father's next words changed everything.
"Your mother didn't leave us."
Roman froze.
The room became silent.
Everyone knew the story.
His mother had abandoned them.
That was what he had been told.
That was what he had believed.
His entire life.
The video continued.
"She was taken away because she found out what I was doing."
Roman looked at Claire.
She looked down.
"Doing what?" Roman whispered.
His father's voice continued.
"I built my company using information I should never have had."
A pause.
"I thought I was smarter than the people around me."
His father looked directly into the camera.
"But I was wrong."
The video flickered.
Then a document appeared on the screen.
Roman recognized the logo immediately.
His company.
But the date was impossible.
The company existed before he was old enough to understand business.
"That's not possible," Roman said.
Claire looked at him.
"Your father created the foundation."
Roman turned.
"What does that mean?"
"It means Roman Vale Industries was never started by you."
The words hit him.
Everything he built.
Everything he sacrificed for.
Everything he believed belonged to him.
Was built on something he never knew.
The video continued.
"Roman, the person who helped me build this company was not my partner."
His father's expression became darker.
"She was my enemy."
The screen showed a name.
A name Roman hadn't expected.
His mother.
Evelyn Vale.
Roman stepped back.
"No."
Claire watched him carefully.
"Roman..."
"No."
He shook his head.
"My mother was not involved in this."
Claire didn't argue.
That made it worse.
Because she didn't need to.
The evidence was there.
The video continued.
"Your mother wanted control."
His father looked exhausted.
"She believed power belonged to whoever was willing to take it."
Roman's hands tightened.
"Then why did she disappear?"
The answer came from the recording.
"Because she found out I had chosen you."
Roman stopped.
The sentence felt impossible.
Chosen him?
For what?
His father continued.
"She wanted Adrian to inherit everything."
Roman's eyes widened.
Adrian.
Again.
The same name.
The same person at the center of every secret.
"Adrian was involved?"
Claire looked away.
Roman noticed.
"Tell me."
Claire didn't speak.
The video answered for her.
"Adrian was never just my friend's son."
Roman froze.
"What?"
His father's voice became quieter.
"He was your mother's choice."
The room felt colder.
Roman stared at the screen.
Adrian.
His best friend.
His brother in everything but blood.
The man who stood beside him through every battle.
Was connected to his mother.
The video continued.
"I brought Adrian into your life because I thought I could protect you by keeping your enemy close."
His father closed his eyes.
"But I failed."
The screen suddenly shook.
His father looked toward something off-camera.
Fear appeared on his face.
"If someone finds this recording, Roman..."
He moved closer to the camera.
"Do not trust anyone who tells you they are protecting you."
The video ended.
The screen went black.
Roman stood there.
Silent.
The footsteps outside were getting closer.
Claire spoke quietly.
"Now you understand why Emma left."
Roman looked at her.
"No."
His voice was cold.
"I understand why she was afraid."
Claire nodded.
"She discovered the same thing."
Roman grabbed the USB drive.
"Where is she?"
Claire looked at him.
"I don't know."
That answer made him angry.
"You worked with her."
"Yes."
"You helped her disappear."
"Yes."
"And you don't know where she is?"
Claire's eyes filled with guilt.
"She didn't trust anyone enough to tell them."
Roman looked away.
That hurt more than he expected.
Emma hadn't trusted him.
His wife.
The woman carrying his child.
The woman who knew his secrets before he knew hers.
She had left without telling him.
Because she believed she had no choice.
A loud crash came from downstairs.
Everyone froze.
Claire immediately turned toward the door.
"They're inside."
Roman grabbed the gun from his coat.
"How many?"
Claire listened.
Then whispered:
"Too many."
The office door handle moved.
Slowly.
Someone was trying to open it.
Roman positioned himself beside the wall.
Claire moved behind the desk.
The handle stopped.
Silence.
Then a voice came from the other side.
"Roman."
He froze.
Because that voice was familiar.
Not Adrian.
Not a stranger.
Someone else.
Someone from his past.
The door opened slightly.
A man stepped into the room.
Roman's eyes widened.
The man was older now.
His hair was gray.
But Roman recognized him.
The person who had attended his father's funeral.
The person who had comforted him when he was twelve.
The person who told him his mother was gone forever.
His uncle.
Victor Vale.
Roman raised the gun.
"What are you doing here?"
Victor looked at the weapon.
Then at Roman.
"I came to take you home."
Roman laughed coldly.
"Home?"
Victor looked at the USB drive in his hand.
His expression changed.
"You watched it."
Roman said nothing.
Victor sighed.
"Then it's already too late."
Claire stepped forward.
"Victor, don't."
Victor looked at her.
"You should have stayed hidden."
Roman's eyes narrowed.
"You know her?"
Victor didn't answer.
That was enough.
Roman lowered the gun slightly.
Not because he trusted him.
Because he needed answers.
"Tell me everything."
Victor looked at the floor.
Then whispered:
"Your father wasn't killed because of the company."
Roman waited.
"He was killed because he found out your mother was planning something bigger."
"What?"
Victor looked at him.
"The baby."
Roman's face changed.
"What baby?"
Victor looked directly at him.
And for the first time, Roman saw genuine fear in his uncle's eyes.
"Emma's baby."
The room went silent.
Roman's grip tightened.
"What about my daughter?"
Victor took one step closer.
"Roman..."
His voice shook.
"Your daughter was never the target."
Roman stared.
"Then who was?"
Victor looked toward the open doorway.
Behind him, someone else was standing in the hallway.
Someone Roman couldn't see clearly.
May you like
Victor whispered:
"The person your mother has been protecting all these years is standing right behind you..."
