Chapter 3 - The File That Was Never Meant To Be Found

Roman stared at the metal box hidden beneath the old wooden desk.

For a moment, he didn't move.

He had faced armed men.

He had sat across from enemies who wanted him destroyed.

He had made decisions that changed entire companies with a single sentence.

But nothing had prepared him for seeing that name again.

Emma's father.

A man who had been dead for five years.

A man whose death had always been explained as a tragic accident.

A man Roman had buried with his own hands.

His fingers moved toward the lock.

It was not a normal lock.

It required a combination.

Roman tried the first numbers that came to his mind.

Emma's birthday.

Wrong.

Their wedding date.

Wrong.

The day they met.

Wrong.

He stopped.

Because suddenly he remembered something.

Emma had once told him something strange.

They were sitting in their kitchen late at night.

She was laughing while writing notes for their future baby.

"What if our daughter forgets something important one day?" she had asked.

Roman smiled.

"Then you remind her."

Emma looked at him.

"No. I mean something only we would know."

He had laughed.

"What are you talking about?"

She tapped his hand.

"A secret."

At the time, Roman thought it was just another one of Emma's emotional moments.

Now, standing alone in an abandoned office, he wondered if it had never been a joke.

He looked at the lock again.

Then entered a number.

Their daughter's expected birthday.

The lock clicked.

Roman froze.

The box opened.

Inside was a stack of documents.

A small USB drive.

And a photograph.

Roman picked up the photograph first.

His breath stopped.

It showed Emma.

Not the Emma he knew from their marriage.

A different Emma.

Serious.

Focused.

Standing beside her father.

And beside them was Adrian.

But Adrian looked younger.

Different.

Not the confident businessman everyone knew.

He looked afraid.

Roman turned the photograph over.

There was handwriting on the back.

Emma's handwriting.

"The three people who knew the truth."

Roman stared at the words.

Three people.

Emma's father.

Adrian.

And who was the third?

His eyes moved back to the photograph.

Then he noticed something.

A reflection in the window behind them.

Someone else was there.

A fourth person.

Someone whose face was hidden.

Roman grabbed his phone and took a picture.

He zoomed in.

The image was unclear.

But one detail was visible.

A ring.

A silver ring with a black stone.

Roman recognized it immediately.

Because he had seen it before.

On the hand of one person.

Someone who had stood beside him for years.

Someone who had helped him build everything.

His phone suddenly rang.

Roman looked at the screen.

It was Adrian.

For several seconds, he just watched it.

The man who disappeared.

The man connected to Emma's disappearance.

The man whose secrets were hidden inside this box.

Roman answered.

"Where are you?"

Silence.

Then Adrian spoke.

His voice sounded tired.

"Roman."

"You know where Emma is."

Another silence.

Longer this time.

"I know why she left."

Roman's grip tightened around the phone.

"Tell me."

Adrian exhaled.

"Not over the phone."

"You don't get to decide that anymore."

"Roman, listen to me."

Adrian's voice changed.

Not defensive.

Not arrogant.

Afraid.

"Your wife didn't run from you."

Roman looked at the empty nursery in his memory.

The missing bag.

The ring.

The message.

"Then why did she leave?"

Adrian answered quietly.

"Because she found out who you really were."

Roman's face hardened.

"I know who I am."

"No."

Adrian paused.

"You know who you became."

The words hit harder than Roman expected.

Because somewhere deep inside, he knew there was a difference.

The old Roman.

The man Emma loved.

The man who believed loyalty mattered.

The man who promised he would never become like his father.

And the Roman everyone feared now.

The man who destroyed enemies before they became threats.

The man who controlled every detail.

The man Emma had started looking at differently.

Roman looked down at the documents inside the box.

"What did she find?"

Adrian didn't answer.

"Adrian."

"I tried to stop her."

Roman went silent.

"Stop her from what?"

Adrian's voice lowered.

"Finding out what happened the night your company began."

Roman closed his eyes.

Five years.

The same night.

The same secret.

Everyone kept pointing back to that night.

"Tell me."

"I can't."

Roman laughed once.

A cold, empty laugh.

"You called me after disappearing. You told me my wife was in danger. You told me to open a box hidden under a desk. And now you say you can't tell me?"

Adrian was quiet.

Then he whispered:

"Because if I tell you, you won't be looking for Emma anymore."

Roman frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means you'll be looking for the person who made her disappear."

The call ended.

Roman stood completely still.

For the first time, he didn't feel angry.

He felt hunted.

He looked around the abandoned office.

Someone had known he would come here.

Someone had placed the box exactly where he would find it.

Someone wanted him to uncover the truth.

But why?

He grabbed the USB drive.

Before leaving, he searched through the remaining papers.

Most were financial records.

Old company contracts.

Business documents.

Until he found one file.

A medical report.

Roman opened it.

The name at the top made his blood run cold.

Emma Vale.

Date:

Five years earlier.

Before they were married.

Roman read the first line.

Then the second.

Then the third.

His hands started shaking.

Because the report proved something impossible.

Emma had known his secret long before she married him.

She had known.

And she still chose him.

Until now.

Roman placed the papers back.

He walked quickly toward the exit.

His phone buzzed.

A message.

From Emma.

Roman stopped breathing.

Emma's number had been disconnected two days ago.

But somehow, a message had arrived.

Only six words.

"Don't come looking for me alone."

Roman stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

This time with a picture.

A location.

An old warehouse outside Chicago.

And underneath the image was a sentence.

"If you trust Adrian, you will lose her."

Roman looked at the photo again.

Then at the empty hallway ahead.

Someone had sent him there.

Someone knew he would choose Emma over everything else.

He walked toward the exit.

But before he reached the stairs, the lights above him suddenly turned off.

One by one.

Darkness filled the hallway.

Roman stopped.

A sound came from behind him.

A door opening slowly.

He turned around.

The office door was moving.

May you like

Someone was standing inside.

And the voice that came from the darkness whispered his name...
