Chapter 5 - The Brother Who Knew Too Much

The lights returned.

Vanessa Cole stood in the kitchen doorway.

A pistol hung at her side.

Declan immediately moved in front of Penny.

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“If I wanted her dead, she would already be dead.”

“Put it down.”

Vanessa placed the gun on the counter.

Liam stared at her.

“You sent the messages.”

“Some.”

“Which ones?”

“The ones keeping Penny alive.”

Penny stepped around Declan.

“Where is Eleanor?”

Vanessa’s face softened.

“Safe.”

“Where?”

“I can’t tell you yet.”

“Then why bring me here?”

“To make sure you found Margaret’s recording before my father did.”

Declan looked at the recorder.

“Arthur’s alive.”

“Yes.”

“You helped fake his death.”

“I helped him disappear because I thought he was dying.”

“And now?”

“Now I know he murdered Moira.”

Vanessa pulled documents from her coat.

Arthur had used Gallagher companies to launder money for decades.

Moira discovered it.

Eleanor copied the books.

Arthur killed Moira and framed Patrick’s criminal organization as the obvious explanation.

“But Margaret escaped with Penny,” Vanessa said. “That destroyed his plan.”

Penny looked at Liam.

“And the recent missing money?”

Vanessa hesitated.

Liam’s face changed.

Declan saw it.

“Liam.”

Liam backed away.

“It wasn’t what you think.”

“What did you do?”

“I found Higgins Maritime six months ago.”

Penny remembered the irregularities beginning exactly six months earlier.

“You moved the money.”

“I was trying to find whoever controlled the account.”

“You knew about me?”

“No. Not at first.”

Declan grabbed his brother’s jacket.

“You used company money as bait?”

“I thought the account belonged to whoever killed Mom!”

“And when you discovered Penny?”

Liam said nothing.

Penny felt sick.

“You knew before this morning.”

His silence confirmed it.

“How long?”

“Three weeks.”

“Three weeks?”

“I ordered a background check.”

Declan shoved him against the wall.

“You put her under surveillance.”

“I was protecting her.”

Penny laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“That’s what men say when they decide a woman doesn’t deserve to know her own life.”

Liam looked ashamed.

“I needed certainty.”

“You needed control.”

That landed.

Declan released him.

Vanessa watched all three.

“My father knows Penny is Eleanor’s daughter now.”

“Why?” Penny asked.

“Because Liam’s investigation triggered an alert attached to the old trust.”

Liam closed his eyes.

Penny understood.

Everything happening now had begun because Liam went digging.

Declan’s fury was almost physical.

Before he could speak, Vanessa’s phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

“My father.”

Declan held out his hand.

Vanessa answered on speaker.

Arthur Cole’s voice sounded older than the recording.

“Hello, Vanessa.”

“Where are you?”

“You brought Declan.”

She looked around.

There were no visible cameras.

Arthur chuckled.

“You always were predictable.”

“What do you want?”

“The ring.”

Penny looked at the emerald.

“Why?”

Arthur answered her directly.

“Because, Penelope, it isn’t jewelry.”

She stared at it.

“The stone comes out.”

Declan took her hand.

He examined the setting.

A tiny mechanism lay beneath one corner.

He pressed it.

The emerald lifted.

Underneath was a narrow cavity.

Inside was a tiny brass key.

Nobody spoke.

Arthur laughed softly through the phone.

“Margaret was clever.”

“What does it open?” Penny asked.

“The only thing that can bury the Gallagher family and me together.”

Declan’s eyes hardened.

“Where?”

Arthur ignored him.

“Penelope, your mother has waited twenty-nine years to see you.”

Penny’s breath caught.

“Let me speak to her.”

Silence.

Then a woman came onto the line.

“Penny?”

One word.

Penny’s entire body went still.

The voice trembled.

“I’m sorry.”

Penny covered her mouth.

“Mom?”

A sob came through the speaker.

Then Arthur returned.

“Bring the key.”

The call ended.

Declan immediately ordered the number traced.

Vanessa shook her head.

“He’ll expect that.”

Penny stared at the tiny key.

Margaret had carried it beneath the emerald for decades.

Declan looked at her.

“You’re not trading yourself for Eleanor.”

“I’m not planning to.”

“What are you planning?”

Penny walked to the dusty desk.

She placed the key beside Margaret’s recorder.

“Arthur thinks he knows what it opens.”

“You think he’s wrong?”

“I think Grandma never trusted anyone with the whole truth.”

Penny picked up the old photograph from St. Agnes.

There had been three ringed hands.

Three rings.

Moira.

Margaret.

And someone else.

She examined the photograph under her phone flashlight.

On the third ring, the stone was not emerald.

It was black.

On its setting was a number.

The storage unit.

Penny’s heart accelerated.

“The key doesn’t open whatever Arthur wants.”

Declan leaned closer.

“What does it open?”

Penny remembered the metal cabinet in unit 417.

One drawer had remained locked.

They had assumed it was jammed.

They rushed back to the storage facility.

The brass key fit perfectly.

Penny turned it.

The drawer clicked open.

Inside lay a sealed envelope marked in Margaret’s handwriting:

FOR DECLAN—ONLY AFTER LIAM CONFESSES WHAT HE DID THE NIGHT MOIRA DIED.
