Chapter 14 - Before His Own Brother Could Destroy Her

Penny found Liam in the underground garage.
She threw the photograph onto the hood of his car.
“Talk.”
Liam looked at it.
His face changed.
Declan arrived seconds later.
Penny had called him too.
“What happened?” Declan asked.
Penny pointed at Liam.
“He knows.”
Liam closed his eyes.
“I didn’t kill them.”
“Then who did?”
“Dad.”
Penny stopped.
Patrick.
Liam explained.
At nineteen, he overheard Patrick ordering someone to frighten Daniel Higgins.
Daniel had begun investigating Gallagher Logistics after discovering irregular payments Margaret received.
Patrick wanted him intimidated.
The driver hired to force Daniel’s car off the road went too far.
Daniel and Susan died.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I didn’t know you were their daughter until three weeks ago.”
“Then you knew.”
“Yes.”
“And said nothing.”
“Yes.”
Penny slapped him.
The sound echoed through the garage.
Liam did not move.
Declan did not interfere.
Penny’s eyes burned.
“You knew my father killed the people who raised me.”
“Yes.”
“And you let me sit beside him.”
“I was ashamed.”
“No. You were afraid.”
“Yes.”
Penny stepped away.
That was Liam’s pattern.
Fear.
Then secrecy.
Then damage.
“I can’t trust you.”
“I know.”
“You don’t get to say that like it fixes anything.”
“I know that too.”
Declan looked at his brother.
“Why hide it?”
Liam’s answer came quietly.
“Because if Penny knew, she’d destroy the company.”
Penny stared.
There it was.
Money again.
Legacy.
The Gallagher name.
Liam had learned nothing.
He saw her expression and immediately understood.
“No. Penny, wait.”
She backed away.
“You thought I’d take everything.”
“I thought you’d burn it down.”
“Maybe I should.”
Liam looked terrified.
Not of losing money.
Of losing her.
For the first time, Penny did not care.
She walked away.
The next morning she called an emergency board meeting.
Liam arrived expecting removal.
Instead, Penny presented a restructuring proposal.
The Gallagher family would surrender majority control.
Employees would receive equity.
Victims of the criminal operations would receive compensation through a restitution fund.
The Higgins family deaths would be publicly acknowledged.
Moira’s murder would no longer be buried beneath the Gallagher name.
Declan voted yes.
Liam stared at the proposal.
“You could take control yourself.”
“Yes.”
“And you’re giving it away?”
“No.”
Penny looked around the table.
“I’m distributing it.”
Liam slowly understood.
Penny had spent her life invisible because powerful people believed power meant standing above everyone else.
She wanted nothing to do with that kind of power.
Liam voted yes.
Afterward, he approached her.
“I’m resigning.”
Penny looked up.
“You don’t have to.”
“I do.”
“Why?”
“Because if I stay simply because I’m your brother, we’ve changed nothing.”
It was the first decision Liam made that Penny respected without reservation.
He handed her his office key.
“I’m sorry.”
Penny nodded.
She was not ready to forgive him.
But she believed him.
That afternoon, Declan found her alone.
“You did what Mom wanted.”
“What?”
“You chose law over revenge.”
Penny looked at Moira’s ring.
“I had good teachers.”
Declan smiled.
Then the conference-room door opened.
A federal agent entered.
His expression was grim.
“Ms. Higgins, we have a problem.”
Penny stood.
“What?”
“Arthur Cole agreed to give a full confession.”
“That sounds like your problem improving.”
“It would.”
The agent placed a sealed document on the table.
“He says there is one final Gallagher account nobody has found.”
Declan frowned.
“What account?”
The agent looked at Penny.
“One opened in your name twenty-nine years ago.”
Penny’s stomach tightened.
“And?”
“It was accessed this morning.”
“By whom?”
The agent slid a surveillance photograph across the table.
Penny looked down.
The woman entering the bank vault had Penny’s face.
Not similar.
Nearly identical.
Penny slowly raised her eyes.
The agent spoke.
“Ms. Higgins, according to the original St. Agnes birth register, Eleanor Gallagher didn’t give birth to one daughter.”
May you like
He opened the sealed document.
“She gave birth to twins.”
