Chapter 5 - The Brother Who Knew

Caleb wanted Mara to stay behind.
She refused.
This time, he didn’t argue for long.
They reached Saint Cecelia’s shortly before three in the morning.
The cathedral was dark except for votive candles near the altar.
Luca entered first.
Father Michael was found in the sacristy.
Alive.
Shaken.
A bruise darkened his temple.
Caruso was gone.
So was Daniel’s recording.
“Did he take everything?” Caleb asked.
Father Michael shook his head.
“No.”
He reached beneath his robe.
A flash drive.
“I gave him a duplicate.”
Caleb almost smiled.
“You lied to him.”
“I’ve been hearing confessions forty years.”
Father Michael looked at Mara.
“I recognize men who think God works for them.”
They went into a private office.
Father Michael inserted the drive into an old computer.
Daniel appeared on screen.
Mara stopped breathing.
He wore the blue shirt she loved.
No tie.
Tired eyes.
He looked directly into the camera.
“If you’re watching this, I failed.”
Mara covered her mouth.
Daniel continued.
“My name is Daniel Romano. And before anything else, Mara, I owe you an apology.”
Her eyes filled.
Caleb stood beside her.
Daniel explained everything.
Six years earlier, he had discovered that Elena Romano might have survived.
He found Evelyn.
She refused to reveal Mara’s location.
Daniel respected it.
Years passed.
Then he met Mara by accident at the literacy fundraiser.
He recognized her immediately.
Not because of the photograph.
Because she laughed exactly like Elena.
Mara broke down.
Daniel’s voice continued.
“I should have walked away.”
She whispered, “Yes.”
“But I couldn’t.”
Daniel explained that he initially stayed near Mara to protect her.
Then friendship became love.
He learned the truth about his own birth from Isabella.
He wasn’t Victor’s biological son.
There was no blood relation.
Still, he knew the deception was unforgivable.
“I kept telling myself I needed one more piece of proof before I told you.”
Mara stared at the screen.
“One more day. One more document. One more name. I was a coward dressed as a protector.”
Caleb closed his eyes.
Daniel looked into the camera.
“Caleb, don’t defend me. She deserves to be angry.”
Mara laughed through tears.
“Of course he knew you.”
The video continued.
Daniel had uncovered evidence that Vincent Caruso orchestrated the 1999 kidnapping attempt.
But Caruso wasn’t acting alone.
Someone financed him.
Someone inside the Romano family.
Mara stiffened.
Daniel held up an old ledger.
“The answer is in account 7714.”
Arthur leaned closer.
“I know that account.”
“What is it?” Caleb asked.
“A discretionary family account.”
“Controlled by whom?”
Arthur stared at the screen.
“Isabella.”
Mara looked at Caleb.
His face became unreadable.
Daniel continued.
“But money alone does not prove intent. That’s why I kept investigating.”
He had discovered a second transfer made two days before the crash.
To a security contractor.
Signed by Isabella.
Caleb shook his head.
“No.”
Mara said nothing.
On screen, Daniel seemed to anticipate him.
“Caleb, Mother will tell you she was protecting us. She always believes that. That is what makes her dangerous.”
Caleb stepped away from the monitor.
Daniel continued.
“She ordered Caruso to take Elena.”
Mara’s stomach turned.
“Not kill her. Take her.”
Caleb looked back.
“Why?”
The video answered.
“Father planned to leave Chicago with Elena and turn over company control to trustees. Mother believed Elena was manipulating him because he favored her future inheritance.”
Mara whispered, “I was six.”
Daniel continued.
“She didn’t see a child. She saw twenty-four percent.”
Caleb sat heavily.
Mara had never imagined seeing a man like him look small.
But he did.
For perhaps the first time in his life, Caleb Romano looked like a son.
Not a boss.
Not a protector.
A son learning his mother had betrayed them all.
Daniel explained that Isabella ordered Caruso to retrieve Elena and keep her hidden until Victor changed his plans.
Then Victor died unexpectedly.
Everything shifted.
Caruso feared exposure.
He attempted to eliminate evidence.
The crash happened.
Isabella believed Elena died.
She buried the truth.
Caruso remained useful.
For decades.
“Daniel knew Caruso killed Victor?” Mara asked.
On screen, Daniel answered as though he heard her.
“I believe Caruso poisoned Father.”
Arthur’s face went white.
Daniel said he lacked proof.
But the final evidence had been hidden by Victor himself.
A ledger.
Not financial.
Personal.
Victor recorded meetings.
Dates.
Threats.
Names.
Daniel believed it remained inside Romano Holdings’ original headquarters.
Caleb stood.
“That building is being demolished next week.”
Daniel continued.
“The ledger is behind the wall in Father’s old office.”
The recording ended with Daniel looking directly at Mara.
“I loved you. That doesn’t excuse what I did. If you never forgive me, I understand. But please know this: finding you was the happiest accident of my life.”
The screen went black.
Mara cried silently.
No dramatic collapse.
No screaming.
Just tears that wouldn’t stop.
Caleb remained beside her.
After several minutes, she whispered, “He should have told me.”
“Yes.”
“I would have loved him anyway.”
“I know.”
“That’s what hurts.”
Caleb nodded.
“I know.”
At dawn, they went to Romano Holdings.
The original headquarters stood mostly empty.
Caleb had the authority to enter.
They reached Victor’s old office on the twenty-first floor.
The room had been preserved.
Dark wood.
Leather chairs.
A massive desk.
Caleb removed a painting.
Behind it was ordinary plaster.
Luca found the hollow section.
They broke through.
Inside was a metal box.
Victor’s ledger.
Mara opened it.
The first pages documented business meetings.
Then private entries.
September 14, 1999.
Isabella confronted me about Elena’s trust. She believes I am choosing our daughter over our sons.
September 17.
Caruso suggested removing Elena temporarily. I warned Isabella this discussion ends now.
September 21.
I have asked Evelyn to prepare.
September 27.
Arthur has completed the federal transfer.
October 1.
If anything happens to me, Caleb must know.
Caleb turned the page.
The next entry had only two sentences.
Isabella met Caruso tonight.
I heard her say: “Bring Elena home before Victor destroys us.”
Mara looked at Caleb.
“She ordered the kidnapping.”
“Yes.”
“But not my death.”
“No.”
A sound came from the doorway.
Slow clapping.
Vincent Caruso stood there.
He held a pistol low by his leg.
Isabella stood beside him.
She looked at Mara.
Then at Caleb.
“Give me the ledger.”
Caleb stepped in front of Mara.
“Mother.”
Isabella’s eyes filled with tears.
“I did everything for this family.”
Caruso smiled.
May you like
“And now the family gets to decide what survives.”
He raised the gun.
