Chapter 3 - The House With No Family Pictures

Caleb took the phone.
“You’re not going.”
Mara snatched it back.
“She’s my mother.”
“She may be bait.”
“She raised me.”
“And someone knows exactly how to use that against you.”
Arthur paced across the bank office.
“The old Romano house has been abandoned twenty years.”
Caleb looked at him.
“No. It hasn’t.”
Arthur stopped.
“What?”
Caleb turned to Luca.
“Who owns Bellhaven now?”
“A holding company.”
“Which one?”
Luca checked his phone.
His expression changed.
“Caruso Property Management.”
Mara remembered the attorney standing beside Isabella at the funeral.
“Vincent Caruso?”
Caleb nodded.
“My mother’s lawyer.”
Mara put the pieces together.
“Then she knows about the message.”
“Maybe.”
“You still don’t believe she was involved?”
“I believe evidence.”
Mara held up her phone.
“This looks like evidence.”
“It looks like manipulation.”
She stared at him.
“Do you always talk like that?”
“When people around me survive, yes.”
The words silenced her.
Caleb looked away.
For the first time, Mara saw the weight beneath his control.
He had buried a sister.
Now a brother.
Perhaps he had spent his life assuming strength could prevent loss.
Perhaps discovering Mara alive felt less like receiving someone back and more like learning his entire past had been fraudulent.
She understood that feeling.
Because she felt it too.
They went to Bellhaven together.
Not alone.
Caleb refused.
Mara didn’t waste time arguing.
The estate stood north of the city behind rusted iron gates and acres of overgrown trees.
Mara expected nothing.
Then the gate appeared.
And her stomach turned.
“I know this.”
Caleb looked at her.
“You remember?”
“I don’t know.”
She closed her eyes.
Stone lions.
A fountain.
A bicycle with red streamers.
A boy yelling from a balcony.
“Danny.”
Her eyes opened.
Caleb was staring.
“What did you say?”
“Danny.”
Daniel.
Her brother.
Her fiancé.
Mara suddenly couldn’t breathe.
The horror of it struck with full force.
If Caleb was telling the truth, Daniel wasn’t merely a man who had hidden her identity.
He was her biological brother.
She bent forward.
Caleb caught her shoulders.
“Mara.”
“Don’t touch me.”
He released her instantly.
She staggered away and vomited beside the road.
Caleb stood several feet back, giving her privacy.
When Mara finally straightened, her face was wet with tears.
“Did he know?”
Caleb didn’t answer.
“Did Daniel know when he started dating me?”
“I don’t know.”
“He signed that document six years ago.”
“Yes.”
“So he knew I was Elena.”
“Maybe he suspected.”
“Don’t protect him because he’s dead.”
“I’m not.”
“You loved him.”
“So did you.”
The sentence cut through her anger.
Mara looked toward the house.
“Then I deserve to know what he did.”
“Yes.”
They entered Bellhaven through a side door Luca found unlocked.
The interior smelled of dust and old wood.
Furniture remained under white sheets.
Portraits had been removed from the walls.
Every frame.
Every photograph.
Gone.
Mara walked slowly down a corridor.
Her fingertips brushed the wallpaper.
Blue flowers.
She remembered them.
Not clearly.
As flashes.
A woman kneeling to button her coat.
Daniel sneaking cookies.
Caleb carrying her on his shoulders.
Her chest ached.
At the end of the hallway stood a door.
Small.
White.
Mara stopped.
“That was my room.”
Caleb went still.
“You remember?”
She touched the knob.
“I think so.”
Inside, dust covered everything.
A child-sized bed.
Faded wallpaper.
A wooden rocking horse.
An empty shelf.
Someone had removed most possessions.
But beneath the window was a small painted mark.
Mara walked over.
Three crooked lines.
C + D + E.
She touched the E.
Her throat tightened.
“Elena.”
Caleb stood behind her.
“I carved that.”
“You?”
He nodded.
“Father was furious.”
A faint smile crossed his face.
“You blamed Daniel.”
Mara laughed through tears.
“I would have.”
“You did.”
For one brief second, they shared something resembling family.
Then a noise came from downstairs.
Luca raised his hand.
Everyone froze.
A door closed.
Caleb drew Mara behind him.
“Stay here.”
“No.”
“Mara.”
“My mother is downstairs.”
He looked at her.
“Behind me.”
They descended.
The sound came from the basement.
Luca went first.
Caleb followed.
Mara stayed between Arthur and Caleb.
At the bottom, they found a single lamp burning.
Evelyn sat in a chair.
But she wasn’t tied.
Mara stopped.
“Mom?”
Evelyn looked up.
Her eyes filled instantly.
“Mara.”
Mara ran to her.
“You’re okay?”
Evelyn embraced her.
For several seconds, Mara became a child again.
Then she remembered the photograph.
The grave.
The name.
She pulled away.
“Who am I?”
Evelyn went still.
Caleb entered the light.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Oh, God.”
“Tell her,” Caleb said.
Mara turned.
“No. She tells me.”
Evelyn looked at Mara for a long time.
Then whispered, “Your name was Elena.”
The confirmation hurt more than disbelief.
“Was?”
“I changed it.”
“Why?”
“To save you.”
“From Isabella?”
Evelyn looked toward Arthur.
He shook his head slightly.
Mara saw it.
“What aren’t you telling me?”
Evelyn stood.
“Your father knew someone inside the family planned to use you.”
“For money?”
“For control.”
“Who?”
“I never knew.”
Mara laughed bitterly.
“That seems convenient.”
“I swear.”
“Did Daniel know?”
Evelyn’s face collapsed.
Mara saw the answer before hearing it.
“Yes.”
She stepped back.
“How long?”
“Six years.”
Mara closed her eyes.
Six years.
“Why?”
“Daniel found me.”
“Then he found me.”
“Yes.”
“And instead of telling me he was my brother, he dated me?”
“No.”
Evelyn’s voice was sharp.
“He didn’t know you were Mara.”
Mara frowned.
“What?”
“He found me under another identity. I refused to tell him where you were.”
“But he signed the paper.”
“As confirmation that he understood why I had taken you.”
“So when did he realize?”
Evelyn started crying.
“The night you met.”
The floor vanished beneath Mara.
“He knew from the beginning.”
“He recognized you.”
“And he pursued me anyway?”
“No.”
Evelyn moved closer.
“He was trying to protect you.”
“By proposing?”
“There is something you don’t understand.”
Mara backed away.
“I understand enough.”
“No, you don’t.”
Evelyn grabbed her hand.
“Daniel was not your brother.”
Silence.
Even Caleb looked shocked.
Mara stared.
“What?”
Evelyn swallowed.
“Daniel was not Victor Romano’s son.”
Caleb’s voice went dangerously quiet.
“Explain.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“Isabella was pregnant before she married Victor.”
Caleb’s face hardened.
“My father raised him.”
“Yes.”
“He was still my brother.”
“Yes.”
“But not Mara’s biological brother?”
“Correct.”
Mara sank into a chair.
The relief she felt was immediate.
Then shame followed.
Then confusion.
“Did Daniel know that?”
“Yes.”
Caleb walked away, furious.
“So everybody knew something except me.”
Evelyn looked at Mara.
“Daniel approached you because he wanted to protect you.”
Mara laughed bitterly.
“And then accidentally proposed?”
“He fell in love with you.”
Mara stared at the floor.
That was somehow worse.
Because it made what they shared real.
And Daniel was dead.
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
“He planned to.”
“When?”
“After he proved who tried to kill you.”
Caleb turned.
“He knew?”
Evelyn nodded.
“He suspected.”
“Who?”
Before she answered, a soft click echoed overhead.
Luca looked toward the stairs.
“Someone locked the basement door.”
Caleb’s phone lost signal.
Then the lights went out.
Mara heard Evelyn whisper one word.
May you like
“Run.”
Smoke began curling beneath the door.
