Chapter 6 - The Last King

Madeline's first reaction wasn't fear.
It was fury.
Noah had been taken from police protection.
That meant the conspiracy extended farther than they knew.
Detective Monroe immediately began investigating the officers assigned to him.
Dominic watched the video repeatedly.
Samuel Vale.
The grandfather he'd been told was dead.
The man his mother had feared.
Victor sat nearby.
"I was twenty-nine when he disappeared."
"Why lie about his death?" Dominic asked.
"Because he ordered me to."
"You obeyed?"
Victor laughed bitterly.
"Everyone obeyed Samuel."
Madeline looked at him.
"Not anymore."
Victor studied her.
Now he understood why his son hated her.
Madeline represented something the Vale family had forgotten existed.
A person who could simply say no.
The video contained clues.
Madeline noticed medical equipment behind Samuel.
Oxygen concentrator.
Specialized wheelchair.
Infusion pump.
She zoomed in.
A pharmacy label.
Partially visible.
Dominic leaned closer.
"You recognize it?"
"Private home-care supplier."
Monroe traced it.
One delivery address matched a property outside the city owned through a shell corporation in Marcus Dane's files.
They found Samuel.
Dominic wanted Madeline nowhere near the operation.
She refused.
Again.
"Noah may be injured."
"Police have medics."
"Noah trusts me."
"Madeline."
"Dominic."
He stared at her.
"Do you ever listen?"
"Constantly. I just don't always agree."
He laughed despite himself.
Then his expression softened.
"If something happens to you—"
She waited.
Dominic couldn't finish.
Madeline understood anyway.
During the chaos of the last two days, something had changed between them.
Not because he was feared.
Not because she was brave.
Because each had seen what the other chose when nobody was watching.
Dominic chose Noah over chasing an attacker.
Madeline chose truth over safety.
Again and again.
She touched his hand.
"Then make sure nothing happens."
The property was a converted rehabilitation center.
Police surrounded it.
Dominic and Madeline entered with Monroe's team.
Samuel waited in a large treatment room.
Julian stood beside him.
Noah sat across the room.
Alive.
Samuel looked at Madeline.
"So that's her."
Madeline went directly toward Noah.
Julian blocked her.
"Move."
He laughed.
"You still talk to me like I'm nobody."
Madeline looked at him.
"Right now you're standing between a nurse and her patient. That's exactly what you are."
Dominic almost smiled.
Samuel did.
"I like her."
"I don't care," Madeline said.
Samuel's smile disappeared.
Noah whispered, "Madeline."
She moved toward him.
This time Julian didn't stop her.
She checked Noah.
No major new injuries.
His pulse was fast.
He was dehydrated.
Terrified.
But alive.
Dominic faced Samuel.
"You killed my mother."
Samuel tilted his head.
"Your mother made a choice."
"So did you."
"Yes."
No remorse.
That seemed to free something inside Dominic.
For years he'd imagined finding the person responsible.
He had imagined rage.
Revenge.
Violence.
Instead, he felt clarity.
Samuel was simply an old man who had spent his life convincing everyone that fear was the same thing as loyalty.
Dominic looked at Monroe.
"Arrest him."
Samuel laughed.
"You're giving me to police?"
"Yes."
"You're a Vale."
Dominic shook his head.
"That's my name. It isn't my sentence."
Julian looked horrified.
"You can't do this."
"I already did."
Samuel's expression hardened.
"Then everything becomes public."
"Good."
Victor entered behind the police.
Samuel stared at his son.
"You always were weak."
Victor looked at him.
"For most of my life, I believed you."
Samuel smiled.
"And now?"
"Now I know weakness was needing everyone around you to be afraid."
Samuel's smile faded.
Julian suddenly moved.
Not toward Noah.
Toward the exit.
Officers blocked him.
He turned to Dominic.
"You're destroying the family!"
Dominic answered quietly.
"No. I'm stopping you from doing it."
Julian looked toward Madeline.
"This is because of her."
Madeline stood.
"No."
Everyone looked at her.
"This happened because you ordered a nurse to let a fourteen-year-old boy die, and you couldn't imagine hearing no."
Julian stared at her.
That was the simplest truth of all.
One refusal had cracked everything open.
Julian was arrested.
Samuel too.
Elena and Marcus remained in custody.
Rebecca was reunited with Noah.
But her involvement couldn't simply disappear.
She had concealed evidence.
She had cooperated under pressure.
She had also helped Elena at crucial moments.
Monroe promised the full context would be considered.
Rebecca didn't ask for immunity.
"I just want my son to know I finally told the truth."
Noah hugged her.
Madeline looked away to give them privacy.
Dominic stood beside her.
"It's over."
Madeline shook her head.
"No."
He frowned.
"What?"
"Your family."
Victor.
The businesses.
Thousands of employees.
Years of hidden money.
Victims.
Evidence.
Nothing ended simply because the villains were in handcuffs.
Dominic understood.
"You're right."
They returned to the hospital.
Noah needed another week of care.
Madeline resumed her shifts.
For the first time in days, she did something normal.
Changed dressings.
Answered call lights.
Argued with a resident about medication timing.
Drank terrible coffee.
At midnight, Dominic appeared.
No leather jacket.
Dark sweater.
He looked almost ordinary.
Almost.
"You shouldn't be here," Madeline said.
"I hear that often."
"How's Victor?"
"Talking to prosecutors."
"That's good."
"It may put him in prison."
Madeline looked at him.
"Still good."
Dominic nodded.
"I know."
That mattered.
He sat beside her.
"The legitimate businesses need new leadership."
"Don't look at me."
He smiled.
"I wasn't."
"You were."
"I was thinking."
"Dangerous."
He laughed.
Then he became serious.
"Victor wants me to take control."
Madeline studied him.
"What do you want?"
Nobody had asked Dominic that in years.
He looked surprised.
"I don't know."
"Then figure that out before you say yes."
He nodded.
"Madeline?"
"Yes?"
"Why weren't you afraid of Julian?"
She thought about it.
"I was."
Dominic frowned.
"You didn't look afraid."
"Being afraid and obeying fear aren't the same thing."
He stared at her.
Those words stayed with him.
A week later, Noah walked slowly down the hospital corridor with Madeline beside him.
Rebecca waited at the end.
Dominic stood farther back.
Noah grinned.
"I told you I'd walk."
"You complained the entire way."
"Still counts."
"It does."
He reached his mother.
Rebecca hugged him.
Madeline smiled.
Then Detective Monroe appeared.
Her expression was wrong.
Dominic noticed too.
"What happened?"
Monroe handed him an envelope.
"We searched Samuel's property."
"And?"
"We found records going back thirty years."
Dominic opened the envelope.
Photographs.
Names.
Payments.
Then one document.
Madeline saw her own last name.
BROOKS.
She froze.
"What is that?"
Dominic looked at her.
"Madeline..."
She took the paper.
Her father's name was printed across the top.
THOMAS BROOKS.
Madeline hadn't seen that name in fifteen years.
Her father had disappeared when she was seventeen.
Police had assumed he'd abandoned the family.
Madeline had spent half her life believing it.
Under his name was a designation.
VALE MEDICAL ACCOUNT — CONFIDENTIAL.
Madeline's hands began shaking.
"No."
Dominic turned the page.
There was a photograph.
Thomas Brooks stood beside Vivienne Vale.
Behind them was the same hospital where Madeline now worked.
On the back, someone had written:
THE NURSE'S FATHER KNOWS WHERE THE FINAL FILE IS.
Madeline looked up.
A hospital elevator opened.
An elderly man stepped out.
Madeline stopped breathing.
May you like
He looked directly at her.
"Hello, Maddie."
