Chapter 5 - The House of Vale

Madeline had spent years walking into rooms where people were dying.
The Vale house was the first place she entered knowing the danger might be waiting upright.
Detective Monroe wanted them to stay away.
Dominic refused.
Madeline did too.
"Rebecca is there."
Monroe looked at her.
"You're a nurse, not law enforcement."
"Exactly. Nobody in that house sees me as a threat."
Dominic glanced at her.
"That's becoming less true by the hour."
They agreed on a plan.
Police would remain outside until Dominic confirmed Rebecca's location.
Madeline carried no weapon.
She carried Daniel's ledger.
Or what appeared to be it.
The real ledger was already with Monroe.
Dominic walked beside her through the front doors.
Julian waited in the foyer.
His white shirt had been replaced by a black suit.
He looked polished again.
His eyes didn't.
"You brought her."
Dominic stepped in front of Madeline.
"Where's Rebecca?"
Julian smiled.
"Always straight to business."
"Where?"
"Study."
They entered.
Victor Vale sat behind a large desk.
He looked older than Madeline expected.
Not weak.
Tired.
Elena stood beside the fireplace.
Marcus Dane stood near the window.
Rebecca sat in a chair.
Alive.
Madeline exhaled.
Victor studied her.
"You're the nurse."
"Madeline Brooks."
"The woman who ignored my son's order."
"Your son ordered me to let a child die."
Victor looked at Julian.
Julian shrugged.
"He was a witness."
Victor's face changed.
Madeline realized something.
Victor hadn't known.
"You did what?"
Julian stepped forward.
"Don't pretend you suddenly care about innocence."
Victor stood.
Dominic watched him carefully.
Elena interrupted.
"Enough."
One word.
Everybody stopped.
Madeline noticed.
Even Victor.
There it was.
Power.
Not where the family claimed it was.
Where it actually was.
Elena looked at Madeline.
"The ledger."
Madeline held up the copy.
"Rebecca first."
Elena smiled.
"You negotiate boldly."
"I work in an emergency department. This is a quiet Tuesday."
Dominic almost smiled.
Elena didn't.
"Give Marcus the ledger."
Madeline looked at Rebecca.
"Stand up."
Rebecca did.
"Walk toward me."
She took one step.
Julian blocked her.
Dominic moved.
Marcus opened his jacket.
Dominic stopped.
The tension became physical.
Victor slammed his hand on the desk.
"Enough!"
Everyone looked at him.
He pointed at Julian.
"Move."
Julian stared at his father.
Then laughed.
"No."
Victor's face went pale.
Julian stepped closer.
"You still think you're in charge."
Elena watched silently.
Victor looked at his sister.
"Elena?"
She met his eyes.
And Victor finally understood.
"How long?"
"Longer than Dominic has been alive."
Dominic stiffened.
Madeline remembered Vivienne.
Victor whispered, "You?"
Elena smiled sadly.
"You were never suited to lead."
Victor stared at her.
"Vivienne."
Elena's smile disappeared.
Dominic took one step.
"What about my mother?"
Victor sat slowly.
"No."
Dominic's voice hardened.
"What about her?"
Elena looked at him.
"She was inconvenient."
Madeline saw Dominic's hands curl.
She stepped beside him.
Not touching.
Just there.
He noticed.
He breathed.
"Did you kill her?"
Elena answered calmly.
"I corrected a problem."
Dominic's face became terrifyingly still.
Julian smiled.
"Now you know."
Dominic turned toward him.
"And you knew?"
"For years."
Victor whispered, "I thought it was an accident."
Elena looked at her brother.
"You believed what was easiest."
Those words hurt Victor more than any accusation.
Madeline understood then that Elena's greatest weapon had never been fear.
It was shame.
She had spent decades making powerful men doubt themselves.
Marcus moved toward Madeline.
"The ledger."
Madeline handed it over.
He opened it.
His expression changed.
"Copies."
Elena looked at Madeline.
"Where is the original?"
"Safe."
"With whom?"
Madeline smiled faintly.
"Someone you can't order around."
Sirens sounded outside.
Julian turned.
"You brought police?"
Dominic answered.
"I did."
Victor stared at him.
"You brought police to my house?"
Dominic met his uncle's eyes.
"I brought consequences."
Elena moved first.
Not toward the door.
Toward Rebecca.
She grabbed her arm and pulled her toward a side hallway.
Madeline followed.
Dominic shouted her name.
Madeline ignored him.
Rebecca disappeared through a door.
Madeline entered after her.
A library.
Elena stood beside a wall safe.
Rebecca was beside her.
"Stop," Madeline said.
Elena laughed.
"You truly don't understand fear."
"I understand it."
Madeline stepped closer.
"I just don't let it make decisions for me."
Elena looked at Rebecca.
"Tell her."
Rebecca cried.
"Madeline..."
"What?"
"Daniel wasn't the first person who gave me evidence."
Dominic entered behind them.
Rebecca looked at him.
"Your mother did."
Silence.
Dominic stopped breathing.
"Impossible."
"I was a child."
Rebecca shook.
"My father worked for Victor. Vivienne came to our house one night. She gave him documents."
Dominic stared.
"Where are they?"
Rebecca looked toward the safe.
"Elena found most of them."
"Most?"
Rebecca nodded.
"Vivienne kept one thing."
"What?"
"A recording."
Elena suddenly lunged toward the safe.
Dominic blocked her.
Police entered the house.
Marcus surrendered almost immediately.
Julian ran.
Officers chased him.
Victor remained in the study, shattered by what he'd learned.
Dominic opened the safe.
Documents.
Cash.
Photographs.
And an old cassette tape.
His mother's handwriting covered the label.
FOR DOMINIC, WHEN HE'S READY.
His hands shook.
Madeline had never seen them shake before.
They found a cassette player in the library.
Dominic inserted the tape.
Vivienne's voice filled the room.
"If you're hearing this, my son, then I failed to leave safely."
Dominic closed his eyes.
Madeline stood beside him.
Vivienne explained that Elena had been secretly manipulating Vale businesses for years.
But she said something else.
Something nobody expected.
"Victor is not the architect," Vivienne said. "He has done terrible things, but this betrayal is not his. Elena is protecting someone."
Dominic opened his eyes.
The recording crackled.
Then Vivienne spoke the name.
"Samuel Vale."
Victor's father.
Dominic's grandfather.
Madeline frowned.
"He's dead."
Victor appeared in the doorway.
"No."
Everyone turned.
Victor looked twenty years older.
"My father isn't dead."
Dominic stared at him.
"You buried him."
"We buried an empty coffin."
Elena smiled.
Police restrained her.
But she was still smiling.
Dominic looked at Victor.
"Where is Samuel?"
Victor swallowed.
"I haven't seen him in twenty-six years."
Madeline's phone vibrated.
A new video.
Unknown sender.
She opened it.
An elderly man sat in a wheelchair.
Behind him stood Julian.
Samuel Vale looked directly into the camera.
Then he smiled.
"Hello, Dominic."
Madeline felt Dominic go still beside her.
Samuel continued.
"You've spent your whole life serving the wrong king."
The camera shifted.
Julian opened a door behind Samuel.
Inside was Noah.
Again.
Madeline's blood went cold.
May you like
Samuel leaned toward the camera.
"Bring me the nurse."
