Chapter 9 - The Brother Who Came Back

Jacob stared at the man at the bottom of the stairs.
The uniform was unmistakable.
The face was older.
The hair was shorter.
But the eyes were the same.
Daniel Ryan.
His brother.
The man Jacob had buried in his heart six years ago.
Claire tightened her grip around Emily.
Anna stepped backward.
Even Elias looked terrified.
Their father said nothing.
Jacob's voice barely escaped.
“Daniel?”
The man slowly climbed the stairs.
One step.
Then another.
He stopped halfway.
“I told you I'd come back.”
Jacob's eyes filled with disbelief.
“You're dead.”
Daniel gave a tired smile.
“So everyone keeps saying.”
Jacob raised his weapon.
Daniel didn't flinch.
“You killed me.”
“No.”
“You changed the explosives.”
“Yes.”
“You crippled me.”
Daniel's expression broke.
“I saved you.”
Jacob's jaw tightened.
“You call this saving me?”
“I call it keeping you alive.”
“You destroyed my life.”
Daniel looked at his wheelchair.
“I know.”
“Then why?”
Daniel took another step.
“Because Dad was going to make you his successor.”
Jacob stared.
“I never wanted his empire.”
“I knew.”
“Then why didn't you tell me?”
“Because if you knew, you would have stayed.”
“Stayed where?”
“Here.”
Daniel pointed beneath them.
“Inside this.”
Jacob looked down the dark staircase.
“What is Level Five?”
Daniel's face became serious.
“The place where everything started.”
Their father finally spoke.
“Daniel.”
Daniel turned toward him.
“You should have stayed dead.”
Daniel smiled coldly.
“You should have stayed buried.”
The two men stared at each other.
Claire felt the tension between them.
It wasn't simply hatred.
It was history.
Years of betrayal.
Years of secrets.
Years of blood.
Jacob looked between them.
“I'm done being lied to.”
Daniel nodded.
“Then come downstairs.”
Their father stepped forward.
“No.”
Jacob turned.
“You don't get to decide anymore.”
His father looked at him.
“You have no idea what is waiting below.”
Jacob's voice hardened.
“I've spent six years not knowing anything.”
He moved toward the stairs.
Claire followed.
Daniel watched her.
“Bring Emily.”
Claire held the little girl closer.
Anna stepped beside her.
“I'll come too.”
Elias shook his head.
“No.”
Anna looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because if Level Five opens completely, we may not get another chance to close it.”
Daniel glanced at Elias.
“He's right.”
Jacob stopped.
“What happens if it opens?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Everyone who has ever used the system will know we're here.”
Claire frowned.
“Everyone?”
Daniel nodded.
“Every person who has money, power, or blood tied to this place.”
Jacob looked toward his father.
“You built this.”
His father said nothing.
Daniel answered.
“He built the first part.”
“And the rest?”
Daniel's eyes darkened.
“I did.”
Jacob froze.
“You?”
“Yes.”
“You helped him.”
“I was seventeen.”
“You were already running his organization.”
“I was trying to destroy it from inside.”
Jacob laughed bitterly.
“And you needed me to become disabled to do that?”
Daniel's expression tightened.
“I needed you to disappear.”
Claire stepped between them.
“You could have told him.”
“I tried.”
“When?”
“Every time I saw him.”
Jacob stared.
“You saw me?”
Daniel nodded.
“After the explosion.”
Jacob's eyes widened.
“Where?”
“In the hospital.”
“You were there?”
“I stood outside your room.”
“Why didn't you come in?”
“Because Dad had men watching you.”
Jacob's voice cracked.
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I had to.”
“Why?”
Daniel looked at Claire.
“Because they were watching her too.”
Claire's eyes widened.
“They watched me?”
“They watched everyone who knew about the child.”
Jacob looked at Emily.
“Who else knew?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Three people.”
“Who?”
“Me.”
“Claire.”
“And your father.”
Claire shook her head.
“I didn't know.”
“You knew enough.”
She stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel looked at her wrist.
“The scar.”
Claire covered it instinctively.
“That's not a scar.”
Jacob looked at her.
“What is it?”
Daniel answered.
“A tracking mark.”
Claire's face went pale.
“No.”
“It was placed there after the convoy.”
“By whom?”
“Your father.”
She turned toward the older man.
“You put something inside me?”
“It wasn't permanent.”
Claire's voice trembled.
“You tracked me.”
“Yes.”
“For six years?”
“Yes.”
Jacob's expression became murderous.
“You watched her?”
His father looked at him.
“I watched everyone.”
Jacob raised the weapon.
Daniel grabbed his wrist.
“Don't.”
Jacob looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because that's exactly what he wants.”
Their father smiled.
“You're finally learning.”
Daniel released Jacob.
Then he walked to the wall.
He pressed his palm against a small metal panel.
A hidden door opened.
Behind it was a narrow room filled with monitors.
Claire stepped inside.
Her breath caught.
There were hundreds of screens.
Hospital rooms.
Homes.
Cars.
Offices.
People.
Families.
All being watched.
Jacob stared.
“How many?”
Daniel answered,
“Over eight hundred.”
Claire looked horrified.
“These people…”
“Are connected to the organization.”
“Do they know they're being watched?”
“No.”
Jacob turned to Daniel.
“You've been monitoring them.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To identify the people who are still loyal to Dad.”
His father entered the room.
“You've always been too sentimental.”
Daniel ignored him.
Jacob looked at the screens.
Then one screen caught his attention.
Room 214.
The hospital room they had left.
A man was standing beside the bed.
Jacob stared.
It was Dr. Hale.
He was holding the syringe.
But he wasn't alone.
A second man stood behind him.
Jacob couldn't see his face.
Daniel noticed.
“That's him.”
“Who?”
“The man who ordered the convoy.”
Jacob stepped closer.
“Can you zoom in?”
Daniel touched the screen.
The image sharpened.
The man's face appeared.
Jacob stopped breathing.
Claire stared.
Anna covered her mouth.
Elias whispered,
“No.”
Jacob turned toward his father.
“You know him.”
His father didn't answer.
Jacob looked at Daniel.
“Who is he?”
Daniel's expression was grim.
“Colonel Nathaniel Cross.”
Claire remembered the name.
The man who signed Jacob's death certificate.
The man who had supposedly died in a plane crash three years after the convoy.
Jacob stared at the screen.
“He's alive.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Daniel pointed to another screen.
A live map appeared.
One location blinked.
Graybridge Hospital.
Jacob's face hardened.
“He's here.”
Daniel nodded.
“Not anymore.”
Jacob looked at him.
“What?”
“He left the hospital twenty minutes ago.”
“Where is he going?”
Daniel hesitated.
Then the map shifted.
The blinking point moved underground.
Jacob stared.
“That's impossible.”
Daniel looked at the screen.
“He's coming here.”
Claire pulled Emily closer.
“Why?”
Daniel's expression changed.
“Because he knows you're here.”
The room fell silent.
Then every screen suddenly turned black.
A single message appeared across all of them.
WELCOME HOME, DANIEL.
Daniel froze.
Jacob looked at him.
“What?”
Daniel didn't answer.
Another message appeared.
YOU BROUGHT THE CHILD BACK TO ME.
Claire's heart stopped.
Emily began crying.
“Mommy.”
Claire held her tightly.
“I'm here.”
The monitors flickered again.
A photograph appeared.
It showed Claire.
Six years younger.
Holding a newborn.
Beside her stood Daniel.
And beside Daniel stood Nathaniel Cross.
Jacob stared.
“What is that?”
Daniel looked sick.
“I don't know.”
The image changed.
Another photograph.
This time, Jacob stood beside Claire.
His hand rested on her shoulder.
The baby was between them.
Jacob whispered,
“That picture was taken before the explosion.”
“Yes.”
“But I wasn't supposed to know about the baby.”
Daniel said nothing.
Jacob looked at him.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“You knew she was mine.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Claire was carrying my child.”
“Yes.”
Jacob's voice broke.
“Why did you let me lose both of them?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Because you were already being hunted.”
“By Cross?”
“Not just Cross.”
“Then who?”
Daniel hesitated.
A final photograph appeared on the monitors.
It showed a man sitting in a chair.
His face was partially hidden.
But Claire recognized the room.
She recognized the chair.
She recognized the man's hands.
Then the camera slowly zoomed closer.
Claire's eyes widened.
“That can't be.”
Jacob looked at her.
“What?”
She pointed at the screen.
“The ring.”
Jacob stared.
A heavy black ring with a silver line.
His father's ring.
The man on the screen raised his head.
It wasn't their father.
It wasn't Cross.
It wasn't Daniel.
It was someone Claire had never seen before.
But Jacob recognized him instantly.
His face drained of color.
“That's my grandfather.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Your grandfather died thirty years ago.”
Jacob shook his head.
“I know.”
The screen went black.
Then a voice came through the speakers.
Old.
Calm.
Almost amused.
“Jacob Ryan.”
Jacob stared at the ceiling.
The voice continued.
“You finally brought me my granddaughter.”
Claire's heart stopped.
Daniel reached for the emergency controls.
Too late.
The underground doors slammed shut.
Every exit locked simultaneously.
Emily screamed.
Then the lights went out.
In the darkness, Claire heard Jacob whisper one word.
May you like
“Run.”
A second later, something heavy unlocked beneath the floor...
