THE NURSE WHO CALLED HIM GHOST / Chapter 11 / 12

Chapter 11 - The Third Daughter

The woman behind the door stepped into the red light.

Claire forgot how to breathe.

The woman looked exactly like her.

Not similar.

Not close.

Exactly.

The same pale eyes.

The same blonde hair.

The same narrow jaw.

The same scar beneath the left eyebrow.

Anna stood frozen beside Claire.

Emily began crying.

“Mommy…”

Claire pulled her closer.

The woman looked at the child.

Then at Claire.

Her lips curved into a faint smile.

“You finally came back.”

Claire shook her head.

“Who are you?”

The woman looked at Anna.

Anna's face had gone completely white.

“She knows.”

Claire turned toward her.

“Anna?”

Anna couldn't speak.

The woman stepped closer.

“You really don't remember me?”

Claire backed away.

“No.”

The woman touched the scar beneath her own eyebrow.

“You used to call me Lily.”

Claire's eyes widened.

The name struck something inside her.

A bedroom.

Three little girls.

A woman singing.

A red ribbon.

Three identical faces laughing beneath a blanket.

Then the memory vanished.

Claire pressed her hand against her temple.

“I know that name.”

The woman smiled.

“Good.”

Jacob moved his wheelchair forward.

“Who are you?”

The woman looked at him.

“Your daughter’s aunt.”

Jacob stared.

“Which one?”

She smiled.

“All of them.”

Silence filled the corridor.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Lily.”

The woman's eyes narrowed.

“You're still alive.”

Daniel gave a bitter smile.

“So are you.”

Jacob looked between them.

“You know her.”

Daniel nodded.

“She was the third.”

Claire stared.

“The third what?”

Daniel looked at her.

“The third daughter.”

Anna whispered,

“She was supposed to die.”

Lily's smile disappeared.

“I did.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

Lily looked at her.

“For twenty-two minutes.”

Claire's stomach tightened.

“What happened?”

Lily walked toward them.

“Dad ordered the doctors to stop my heart.”

Their father remained silent.

Claire looked at him.

“You tried to kill your own daughter?”

He answered calmly.

“She was unstable.”

Lily laughed.

“I was inconvenient.”

Daniel stepped between them.

“She knew too much.”

Jacob looked at Lily.

“What did she know?”

Lily stared at him.

“The truth about your family.”

Jacob's expression hardened.

“What truth?”

Lily looked toward the steel door.

“This facility wasn't built to control other families.”

She paused.

“It was built to control ours.”

Claire felt a chill.

“How?”

Lily pointed toward their father.

“He created the program after learning there were three daughters.”

Claire's eyes widened.

“Why would that matter?”

“Because of the bloodline.”

Jacob shook his head.

“This is insane.”

“No.”

Lily looked at him.

“It was planned.”

She pointed at Anna.

“Anna was trained to obey.”

Then Claire.

“Claire was trained to forget.”

Then herself.

“I was trained to watch.”

Claire stared.

“Watch what?”

“Everyone.”

Lily stepped closer.

“I could see every record.”

“Every child.”

“Every transaction.”

“Every order.”

Jacob looked at Daniel.

“And you?”

Daniel answered quietly.

“I was trained to execute them.”

Claire looked horrified.

“You were all part of this.”

“Yes.”

“But we were children.”

Their father finally spoke.

“That was the point.”

Claire turned toward him.

“How could you?”

He looked at his daughters.

“Because children can be shaped.”

Lily's eyes filled with anger.

“That's what you told us.”

Claire suddenly remembered.

A room.

A long table.

Three chairs.

Their father standing before them.

A small box on the table.

He opened it.

Inside were three identical silver necklaces.

His voice.

“Each of you has a purpose.”

Claire remembered herself crying.

Anna refusing.

Lily staring silently.

Then the memory disappeared.

Claire gasped.

Jacob caught her hand.

“You remembered.”

She nodded.

“Our childhood.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What did you see?”

“Three necklaces.”

Lily touched the chain around her neck.

Claire looked.

A small silver pendant.

Identical to the one Anna wore.

Claire touched her own neck.

She was wearing one too.

She hadn't remembered putting it on.

Jacob noticed.

“Where did you get that?”

Claire looked down.

“I've had it since the explosion.”

Lily shook her head.

“No.”

“What?”

“You received it before you were born.”

Claire stared.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It was placed beside you when you were a baby.”

Jacob looked at their father.

“Why?”

Their father answered,

“Because the three necklaces were keys.”

Jacob's expression changed.

“To what?”

“The archive.”

Lily nodded.

“Each necklace opens one section.”

Anna touched hers.

“I had the first.”

Claire touched hers.

“I had the second.”

Lily held up hers.

“And I had the third.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“That's why Dad never killed her.”

Lily looked at him.

“He tried.”

Daniel nodded.

“And failed.”

Claire looked at Emily.

“Why does my daughter matter?”

Lily's face softened.

“Because she inherited all three.”

Jacob froze.

“What?”

Lily looked at Emily.

“Your daughter carries the blood markers from all three branches.”

Claire shook her head.

“That's impossible.”

“Not anymore.”

Jacob stared.

“How?”

Lily looked toward their father.

“He made sure the child was born.”

Claire's face went pale.

“What does that mean?”

Lily whispered,

“Your father arranged the pregnancy.”

Jacob stepped forward.

“Careful.”

Lily looked at him.

“You and Claire were meant to have a child.”

Jacob's face tightened.

“You're saying our daughter was planned?”

“Yes.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

Lily continued.

“Your father needed a child who carried all three genetic lines.”

Jacob stared.

“My daughter isn't a project.”

“No.”

Lily's voice softened.

“She was never supposed to be.”

Claire looked at her.

“Then why?”

“Because Daniel changed the plan.”

Daniel looked away.

Lily continued.

“He discovered what Dad wanted to do.”

“What did he want?”

Lily hesitated.

Then said,

“He wanted to use Emily to unlock Level Five.”

Jacob's voice became cold.

“What is Level Five?”

Lily looked toward the dark corridor.

“The master archive.”

Daniel nodded.

“It contains every secret.”

“Everything?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't Dad open it?”

“Because he couldn't.”

Jacob frowned.

“Why?”

Lily looked at Emily.

“Because only a child with all three bloodlines can open the final vault.”

Claire held Emily tighter.

“She is the key.”

“Yes.”

Jacob's expression hardened.

“And now?”

“Now everyone who knows about the archive will come for her.”

A distant alarm sounded.

Daniel turned toward the corridor.

“Cross.”

Elias looked at the monitors.

“No.”

Daniel stared.

“What?”

“The signal isn't from Cross.”

“Then who?”

Elias pointed toward the screen.

A location marker appeared.

Another.

Then another.

Three signals.

Approaching from different directions.

Lily's face changed.

“They're already inside.”

Jacob looked at his father.

“You knew this would happen.”

His father nodded.

“Yes.”

“You brought them here.”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

His father looked at Claire.

“She did.”

Claire froze.

“What?”

“You.”

Claire shook her head.

“I didn't.”

“You activated the archive when you remembered.”

Lily stepped backward.

“No.”

Their father smiled.

“The system detected the bloodline.”

Jacob looked at Claire.

“You activated it?”

“I didn't know.”

“You don't have to.”

A mechanical voice echoed through the corridor.

“GENETIC MATCH CONFIRMED.”

Everyone froze.

The lights turned white.

A second announcement followed.

“THREE ORIGINAL SUBJECTS IDENTIFIED.”

Claire stared.

“Subjects?”

The voice continued.

“SUBJECT ONE: ANNA RYAN.”

Anna stepped backward.

“SUBJECT TWO: CLAIRE RYAN.”

Claire's heart stopped.

She had never used that name.

Not since she was a child.

The voice continued.

“SUBJECT THREE: LILY RYAN.”

Lily looked terrified.

Then a fourth line appeared on the wall.

“COMPOSITE DESCENDANT IDENTIFIED.”

Jacob looked at Emily.

The little girl was shaking.

The system spoke again.

“SUBJECT R-17.”

Claire hugged her.

“No.”

A red light began flashing above the steel door.

Daniel shouted,

“Get away from the door!”

The locking mechanism began releasing.

One bolt.

Then another.

Jacob pushed his wheelchair backward.

“Daniel, stop it!”

“I can't!”

The final bolt unlocked.

The steel door slowly opened.

Behind it was not another room.

It was a vast underground chamber.

Hundreds of files lined the walls.

Photographs covered the glass panels.

Names.

Dates.

Birth certificates.

Military records.

Death certificates.

Every secret the organization had ever buried.

Claire stared at the center of the chamber.

There was a single chair.

Beside it stood a small table.

On the table was a red folder.

Her name was written across it.

CLAIRE RYAN — ORIGINAL SUBJECT.

She stepped forward.

Jacob grabbed her hand.

“Don't.”

She looked at him.

“I need to know.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Whatever is in that folder changes everything.”

Claire reached for it.

Her fingers touched the cover.

Then the lights suddenly dimmed.

A projector activated on the far wall.

An old recording appeared.

A younger Claire stood beside a hospital bed.

She was crying.

Daniel stood behind her.

Anna was holding a newborn.

Lily stood near the door.

And Jacob was lying unconscious on the bed.

Claire in the recording turned toward the camera.

Her younger voice trembled.

“If Jacob ever wakes up, tell him I lied.”

Present-day Claire stopped breathing.

Jacob stared at the screen.

The recording continued.

“I told him the baby was dead.”

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

“I told him because Dad threatened to kill her.”

Jacob looked at her.

The younger Claire continued.

“But that's not the worst part.”

She turned toward the baby.

“The child isn't ours alone.”

Jacob's face went pale.

The recording flickered.

A man's voice came from behind the camera.

“Tell him who the father is.”

Young Claire looked terrified.

She whispered,

“I can't.”

The screen went black.

A single line appeared.

PLAYBACK CONTINUED IN ARCHIVE 5.

Jacob stared at the words.

“Archive Five.”

Daniel looked toward Lily.

Lily was crying.

Claire whispered,

“What is Archive Five?”

Lily didn't answer.

Their father smiled.

“That's where the truth about Emily was recorded.”

Jacob turned toward him.

“What truth?”

Their father looked directly at Claire.

“The truth about who fathered your daughter.”

Claire's face went cold.

Jacob stared at her.

Then the archive door behind them slammed shut.

May you like

A lock engaged.

And from inside Archive Five came the sound of a newborn crying...
