Chapter 8 - When the Powerful Started Choosing Sides

Chase couldn't meet Elena's eyes.

Lucas Grant could.

He was younger than Elena expected.

Early thirties.

Ordinary suit.

Ordinary face.

Nothing about him matched the monster everyone had built in their minds.

He held Sarah's box carefully.

"You brought everyone."

Elena stepped forward.

"Wasn't that the point?"

Lucas smiled.

"You're smarter than your father."

Michael remained behind her.

For once, he allowed Elena to lead.

"Why Chase?"

"Money."

Chase flinched.

Lucas continued.

"Money is useful because people like Chase believe accepting it doesn't make them responsible for what happens afterward."

Elena looked at Chase.

He lowered his head.

Lucas had wanted the video.

Not merely humiliation.

He wanted evidence of how Chicago's elite behaved when they thought the victim was powerless.

He intended to release it alongside financial records proving years of corruption.

"You could have exposed the documents without involving me."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because nobody cares about spreadsheets."

His gaze hardened.

"But they care about stories."

Elena understood that much.

She hated that she did.

"You wanted me to become the story."

"I wanted your father to feel exposed."

Michael finally spoke.

"This is about me."

Lucas laughed.

"It always is with men like you."

Elena turned.

"No."

Both men looked at her.

"This stopped being about either of you when you used me."

Lucas's smile disappeared.

She stepped closer.

"My father hid things from me because he thought he knew what was best. Thomas hid things because he was afraid. Richard hid things because he wanted to protect his family. Victor lied for money. You humiliated me because you wanted an audience."

She looked around.

"Every man involved has a different excuse."

Nobody spoke.

"But every excuse says the same thing. That someone else gets to decide what I deserve to know."

Lucas looked at the box.

"Then take it."

He placed it on the table.

Michael's security tensed.

Lucas stepped away.

Elena opened it.

Inside were original trust documents.

Financial records.

And another recording.

This one was intact.

Sarah appeared on-screen.

Elena held her breath.

Her mother looked tired but determined.

"If Elena ever sees this, then I failed to finish what I started."

Michael closed his eyes.

Sarah explained everything.

Victor and Thomas had manipulated companies tied to the Bellweather trust.

Richard had discovered part of it.

Michael knew some of Victor's methods but not the full scheme.

Sarah intended to expose everyone.

Then she said something no one expected.

"Michael is not innocent."

Elena looked at her father.

He didn't move.

"He built his reputation by letting people fear him. He told himself fear prevented violence. Sometimes it did. Sometimes it created it."

Michael's eyes filled.

Sarah continued.

"But he loves our daughter more than anything. If he sees this, I hope he understands that protecting Elena cannot mean teaching her to live behind his shadow."

Elena cried silently.

Her mother looked directly into the camera.

"Ellie, if you're watching, choose your own name. Even if it's the same one you were born with, make it yours."

The recording ended.

Lucas looked at Michael.

"There. Your wife told the truth."

Michael nodded.

"She did."

No denial.

No anger.

"I spent years building power because I believed it could keep my family safe."

He looked at Elena.

"It didn't."

Lucas seemed almost disappointed.

He wanted resistance.

Michael gave him none.

Then police entered the vault.

Lucas looked surprised.

Elena wasn't.

She had called them during the drive.

"This doesn't belong to private security anymore," she said.

Lucas stared.

"You called the police?"

"I called people whose job it is to determine what happened."

"And your father?"

"If he broke laws, he answers too."

Michael nodded.

Lucas laughed softly.

"You really are Sarah's daughter."

Elena looked at Chase.

"So are you going to tell them everything?"

Chase looked at Preston.

Preston stood at the vault entrance.

The two friends stared at each other.

Finally Chase nodded.

"Yeah."

He handed over his phone.

Lucas was escorted out for questioning, not dragged away, not threatened.

Thomas voluntarily remained.

Richard arrived soon after with attorneys and records.

The structure of silence began collapsing because one person after another finally chose disclosure over protection.

Preston approached Elena.

"I'm sorry."

She looked at him.

"I know."

"No. I don't think you do."

He swallowed.

"I'm not sorry because of your father."

That mattered.

"I would have done that to someone who actually worked here."

He looked ashamed.

"And that's worse."

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

"I can't undo it."

"No."

"But the video—"

"It's already online."

Preston looked horrified.

Chase's original livestream had automatically uploaded before he stopped it.

Millions of views.

The internet knew.

Elena checked her phone.

Messages flooded the screen.

Some defended her.

Some attacked Preston.

Some dug into Michael.

Some invented things that never happened.

Daniel stepped beside her.

"Don't read it tonight."

She almost smiled.

"Good advice."

Then a notification appeared.

Not social media.

Email.

Sender:

SARAH B. CARTER ARCHIVE.

Scheduled eleven years earlier.

Delivery date: tonight.

Elena stared.

Her mother had scheduled something.

Impossible.

Unless someone had activated it.

She opened the message.

One sentence.

IF YOU FOUND THE SECOND BOX, THERE IS ONE LAST PERSON YOU NEED TO HEAR FROM.

Attached was an audio file.

Elena pressed play.

A man's voice began.

Richard Hale whispered:

"Oh, God."

May you like

Because the voice belonged to someone everyone believed had died years ago.

Victor Sloane.
