Chapter 7 - The Secret Inside the Bellweather Grand

The second will changed everything.

Sarah Bellweather Carter had inherited a controlling interest in the original Bellweather property trust from her father.

That trust had quietly retained rights connected to the land beneath the Bellweather Grand and several surrounding properties.

Elena stared at the documents.

"How much is this worth?"

Victoria answered carefully.

"Potentially hundreds of millions."

Elena laughed in disbelief.

"I design restaurant menus."

Nobody laughed with her.

Michael looked sick.

"I didn't know."

Elena believed him.

That surprised her.

But the pain in his face wasn't greed.

It was betrayal.

Sarah had hidden something from him too.

"Why would Mom hide this?"

Victoria turned another page.

"Because Victor and Thomas were trying to gain control of the trust."

Michael understood.

"The shell companies."

"Exactly."

They weren't merely stealing.

They had been positioning themselves to seize assets if Sarah died without the trust being properly transferred.

But Sarah had changed the beneficiary.

Elena.

"And they couldn't find the will," Daniel said.

Victoria nodded.

"Until my mother found it."

Elena looked at her.

"Why didn't she come sooner?"

"Fear."

The same answer again.

Fear had shaped eleven years.

Elena folded the document.

"Then tonight it ends."

Michael drove them to the original Bellweather house.

Elena did not go alone.

She refused Thomas's demand.

Michael came.

Daniel came.

Victoria came.

Even Preston came, although Elena had told him twice that he had no obligation.

His answer was simple.

"I spent my whole life thinking my father's name could protect me from consequences. Tonight I found out what that turns a person into. I'm staying until I can at least do one thing right."

The Bellweather house stood dark.

Elena entered first.

"Thomas?"

A lamp switched on.

Thomas Vale sat in the library.

He looked exactly as Elena remembered.

Gray hair.

Kind eyes.

Tailored suit.

The man who taught her chess.

The man who bought her first bicycle.

"Ellie."

"Don't call me that."

Pain crossed his face.

Michael entered.

Thomas looked at him.

"Mike."

Michael said nothing.

Victoria placed the documents on the table.

"It's over."

Thomas smiled sadly.

"No. It's finally beginning."

He admitted almost everything.

Victor had discovered the Bellweather trust.

Thomas had helped hide transfers.

Sarah found out.

She confronted them.

But Thomas insisted neither man caused her accident.

"She left alive."

Michael stepped closer.

"You lied for eleven years."

"Yes."

"You sat beside me at her funeral."

"Yes."

"You helped raise her daughter."

Thomas looked at Elena.

"Because I loved her."

Elena's voice sharpened.

"Love doesn't look like this."

Thomas lowered his eyes.

"No."

He explained that Victor became obsessed with recovering Sarah's hidden evidence.

Thomas wanted it destroyed.

After Victor disappeared from Chicago, Thomas believed the threat had ended.

Then Victoria returned.

"Why block her calls?" Michael asked.

"Because I knew what she had."

"Why arrange tonight?"

"I didn't."

Victoria frowned.

"What?"

Thomas looked at her.

"I didn't contact Chase."

"Neither did I directly. I used an intermediary."

"Who?"

Victoria hesitated.

"A private investigator."

"Name?"

"Lucas Grant."

Thomas went pale.

Michael noticed.

"Who is Lucas Grant?"

Thomas stood.

"Victor's son."

Victoria shook her head.

"My father didn't have a son."

Thomas looked at her with pity.

"Yes, he did."

The room fell silent.

Thomas explained.

Victor had another family.

Another child.

Lucas had spent years collecting evidence against everyone he believed destroyed his father.

Including Michael.

Including Thomas.

Including Victoria.

And now Elena.

The humiliation at the gala had not merely been designed to expose Elena.

It had been designed to gather all the surviving people connected to Sarah's final night in one place.

"He wanted us together," Daniel said.

Thomas nodded.

"Why?"

Elena already knew.

"Because while we were chasing each other, he was looking for the second box."

Michael's phone rang.

Frank.

Michael answered.

His expression changed.

"Room 614 was broken into ten minutes ago."

Elena closed her eyes.

They had been manipulated perfectly.

"Did he find it?"

"We don't know."

Elena remembered the numbers.

614-2.

Second compartment.

She turned to Victoria.

"What if the second box isn't in the same room?"

Victoria frowned.

Elena looked at the old will.

Bellweather trust.

Bellweather house.

Bellweather Grand.

Her mother had always loved puzzles.

"614-2 could mean something else."

She walked toward the library shelves.

Her mother's childhood books remained there.

Book six.

Shelf fourteen.

Second volume.

Elena pulled it out.

A key fell onto the floor.

Michael stared.

The key was modern.

Hotel key.

Not electronic.

A safe-deposit style key.

Engraved:

B.G. 614.

Elena whispered, "The hotel."

Daniel understood.

"Not room 614."

"The original safe-deposit vault."

Thomas nodded slowly.

"The Bellweather had private guest vaults before the renovation."

Michael called Frank.

"Where is the old vault?"

A pause.

Then Michael looked toward Elena.

"Under the ballroom."

They drove back.

The gala was over.

Police and private security remained around the hotel.

Frank led them below ground.

The old vault door stood open.

Box 614 had been removed.

But someone was still inside.

A shadow moved beyond the steel doorway.

Elena heard a familiar voice.

"You're late."

May you like

A man stepped into the light holding Sarah Carter's second box.

And beside him stood Chase Whitaker.
