Chapter 6 - The Night New York Chose Sides

Dominic did not return to the mansion immediately.

That was exactly what Julian expected.

Instead, he took Emma, Daniel, Evelyn, and Marco to an old church in Queens that had once belonged to Dominic’s grandmother.

Daniel’s wound was treated.

The bullet had passed through his shoulder.

Painful.

Not fatal.

Emma sat beside him.

Twenty years of questions separated father and daughter.

Neither knew where to begin.

Daniel did.

“I’m sorry.”

Emma looked at him.

“For disappearing?”

“For letting you believe I was dead.”

“Why?”

“Because Black Harbor threatened you.”

“They found me anyway.”

“I know.”

Emma’s voice hardened.

“You watched me grow up?”

“From far away.”

“That’s supposed to make it better?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Emma stood and walked away.

Dominic found her outside the chapel.

She wiped tears angrily.

“You don’t have to pretend with me,” he said.

“I’m not.”

“You’re crying like you’re angry.”

“I am angry.”

“That qualifies.”

Emma laughed through tears.

Dominic stood beside her.

“My mother did the same thing.”

“What?”

“Came back from the dead and expected me to understand.”

Emma looked at him.

“Are all wealthy families this exhausting?”

“Only the traditional ones.”

She laughed again.

Then became serious.

“Julian betrayed you.”

“Maybe.”

“You don’t believe it?”

“I believe he took the ledger.”

“Why?”

“That’s the question.”

Marco entered.

“I have an answer.”

They followed him inside.

A message from Julian waited.

Dominic played it.

Julian appeared on screen inside the mansion office.

“I know what this looks like.”

Dominic muttered, “Promising start.”

Julian continued.

“Harland doesn’t know Sebastian is planning to kill him. Sebastian doesn’t know Harland copied the accounts. They’ll both meet tonight at City Hall’s underground emergency bunker.”

Marco frowned.

“How does he know?”

Julian lifted the master ledger.

“I told them I was changing sides.”

Dominic leaned toward the screen.

Julian continued.

“You always wanted evidence. I’m giving you something better. I’m giving you both men in the same room.”

Then his expression changed.

“Dominic, don’t trust Mother.”

Evelyn went still.

Julian continued.

“She didn’t create Black Harbor. But she made the deal that kept it alive after Father tried to destroy it.”

Dominic looked toward Evelyn.

Her face broke.

The video ended.

Silence.

“Explain,” Dominic said.

Evelyn sat down.

“Your father did try to dismantle Black Harbor.”

“But?”

“Harland threatened both of you.”

Julian stared at her from memory.

Dominic waited.

Evelyn continued.

“I gave Harland access to part of the network in exchange for your lives.”

“You kept it alive.”

“Yes.”

“For us.”

“Yes.”

Dominic closed his eyes.

Another terrible choice made in the name of protection.

He was tired of them.

“Tonight it ends,” he said.

Marco looked at him.

“How?”

Dominic turned toward Daniel.

“Can the master key access every account?”

“Yes.”

“Can it send every record somewhere?”

Daniel understood.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Federal prosecutors. Journalists. Internal Affairs. Multiple places.”

Evelyn looked frightened.

“That will burn hundreds of people.”

“Good.”

“Some are innocent employees.”

“Then we separate names from crimes.”

Daniel nodded.

“I can build a release package.”

Dominic looked toward Emma.

“And she decides when it goes.”

Emma blinked.

“Me?”

“You were attacked because they thought they could frighten you.”

“Dominic—”

“You should choose what happens to the thing they hurt you for.”

Emma stared at him.

Then nodded.

By ten that night, Manhattan had become a chessboard.

Dominic contacted every legitimate ally he possessed.

No bribes.

No threats.

Information.

Documents proving Harland’s corruption were quietly delivered to federal agents.

Reporters received partial records.

Independent prosecutors received sealed testimony from Daniel.

The goal was not merely killing Black Harbor’s leaders.

It was making sure their system could not survive them.

At 11:40, Dominic entered City Hall through a maintenance tunnel Julian had provided.

Marco beside him.

Emma remained in a mobile command vehicle with Daniel.

That had been the agreement.

Dominic suspected she would break it.

He was correct.

Five minutes later, she appeared behind him.

He stared.

“You had one job.”

“I’m doing it.”

“From the vehicle.”

“I changed the plan.”

Marco smiled.

Dominic glared at him.

“You encouraged this?”

“I value my life too much to argue with her.”

They reached the underground bunker.

Voices came from inside.

Sebastian.

Harland.

Julian.

Dominic activated a recorder.

Inside, Sebastian was speaking.

“You used my network for political power.”

Harland laughed.

“Your network? You hid for sixteen years.”

“I built it.”

“And I made it useful.”

Julian interrupted.

“You both sound pathetic.”

Sebastian turned.

“You forget who you’re speaking to.”

“No. For the first time, I remember exactly.”

Harland placed a gun on the table.

“You brought the ledger?”

Julian lifted it.

“Yes.”

“And Dominic?”

“Coming.”

Sebastian smiled.

“He always does.”

Dominic entered.

“Family trait.”

All three men turned.

Harland grabbed his weapon.

Marco appeared behind Dominic.

Emma remained hidden near the doorway.

Sebastian looked at his younger son.

“You broke the key.”

Dominic smiled.

“A copy.”

Sebastian’s expression changed.

Dominic continued.

“The real one is already connected to every account.”

Harland went pale.

“You’re bluffing.”

Emma stepped into view with a phone.

“No.”

Harland stared at her.

The battered housekeeper he had expected to silence now held the network’s future in one hand.

Emma looked at Dominic.

He nodded.

She pressed SEND.

Across Manhattan, evidence began moving.

Federal servers.

Newsrooms.

Investigators.

Judges.

Black Harbor’s secrets escaped containment.

Harland raised his gun toward Emma.

Dominic moved.

Julian moved faster.

Gunshot.

Harland fell.

Alive.

His gun slid across the floor.

Sebastian grabbed the ledger and ran toward the tunnel.

Dominic followed.

“Stay with Harland!” he shouted.

He chased his father through concrete corridors.

Sebastian reached a locked steel door.

Dead end.

Dominic stopped ten feet away.

“It’s over.”

Sebastian turned.

“You think sending files destroys power?”

“No.”

“Then you learned nothing.”

“I learned enough.”

“People like Harland will be replaced.”

“Maybe.”

“Fear survives.”

Dominic looked at him.

“That’s your mistake.”

Sebastian smiled.

“Which?”

“You think everybody is afraid of you.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“They’re not.”

Sirens sounded above.

Federal agents.

Police.

Reporters.

Hundreds of phones receiving Black Harbor records.

Sebastian’s world collapsing in real time.

“You could come with me,” Sebastian said.

Dominic almost pitied him.

“You still don’t understand.”

“I’m your father.”

“No.”

Dominic looked at the man who had shaped his life through absence, violence, and lies.

“You’re the reason I learned what I never wanted to become.”

Sebastian raised a hidden gun.

Dominic reacted.

A shot echoed.

Sebastian dropped the weapon.

Marco stood behind Dominic.

Smoke rose from his pistol.

Sebastian clutched his wounded arm.

Marco smiled faintly.

“Sixteen years.”

Dominic looked at him.

“What?”

“I’ve wanted to do that for sixteen years.”

Agents entered the tunnel.

Sebastian Vale was arrested alive.

Dominic watched them take him.

Not revenge.

Something better.

Consequences.

Then his phone rang.

Emma.

He answered.

“Where are you?”

Her voice was shaking.

“Dominic.”

“What happened?”

“You need to come back.”

“Why?”

A pause.

“It’s Julian.”

Dominic ran.

He returned to the bunker.

Harland was gone.

Blood marked the floor.

Julian lay against the wall.

Emma knelt beside him.

Dominic dropped down.

“Julian.”

His brother opened his eyes.

“Still… bad at family reunions.”

Dominic grabbed his shoulder.

“Where’s Harland?”

Julian pointed toward an open emergency door.

“He took Mother.”

Dominic looked toward Evelyn’s empty chair.

Julian struggled to speak.

“And he said something before he left.”

“What?”

Julian stared at Dominic.

“He said Emma was never the real target.”

Dominic slowly looked toward her.

Emma frowned.

May you like

Julian’s next words changed everything.

“He said the person he wanted from the beginning was you.”
