Chapter 5 - Claire Finally Told Me Why She Ran

Claire's mother, Eleanor, had died twelve years earlier.

Or so Adrian believed.

He had attended that funeral too.

Too many graves were becoming questionable.

Adrian turned toward Rachel.

"What does Claire mean?"

Rachel's face had gone pale.

"I don't know."

"Liar."

"I know Eleanor's name. That's all."

Marcus closed the office door.

"Then start talking."

Rachel looked at Adrian.

"Thomas isn't acting alone."

"We established that."

"No. You don't understand."

"Make me."

Rachel hesitated.

"The second organization Luca told you about wasn't designed only to control the Vale empire."

"What else?"

"It controlled families."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"Whose?"

"Men like your father. Partners. Executives. Political donors. Anyone whose loyalty mattered."

"Through money?"

"Sometimes."

"And other times?"

"Children. Marriages. Affairs. Medical records. Addiction. Secrets."

Adrian understood why Claire had been targeted.

His wife had become leverage long before either realized it.

Rachel continued.

"Eleanor worked for them."

Silence.

"What?"

"Claire's mother was a financial auditor."

Adrian remembered Eleanor as a quiet woman who painted landscapes and disliked restaurants with loud music.

"She wasn't an accountant."

"Not publicly."

"What did she audit?"

"The network."

Adrian looked toward the laptop.

"Why would Claire know that?"

"I don't think she did until recently."

Marcus asked, "How recently?"

"St. Catherine."

Rachel sat on the edge of the desk.

"One night Claire saw a patient file with her mother's signature on an archived payment approval."

"That's impossible," Adrian said.

"The date was six years after Eleanor supposedly died."

The room became silent.

"Claire thought it was forged. I investigated."

"And?"

"The signature matched."

Adrian leaned against the desk.

Another dead person.

Another lie.

"What happened to Eleanor?"

"I don't know."

"Thomas does?"

"Maybe."

Rachel glanced toward the video.

"But the man with Claire definitely does."

Adrian looked at Marcus.

"Find the location."

"Working."

Rachel said, "You won't find it from the feed."

"Why?"

"Looped routing."

Marcus gave her a look.

"I know what looped routing is."

Rachel nodded. "Then you know we need another clue."

Adrian stared at Claire on the screen.

The room behind her looked industrial.

Concrete wall.

One metal lamp.

Nothing else.

Then he saw it.

Claire's fingers.

She was tapping against the chair.

Three.

Pause.

One.

Seven.

Again.

"Room 317," Adrian said.

Rachel stood.

"What?"

"She's signaling."

Marcus rewound.

Three taps.

One.

Seven.

Rachel's face changed.

"St. Catherine."

"But it's closed."

"Exactly."

Adrian was already moving.

Rachel grabbed his sleeve.

"If Thomas has Claire there, it isn't because he's waiting for you to rescue her."

"I know."

"He wants you there."

"I know."

"Then think."

Adrian stopped.

Rachel lowered her voice.

"Claire survived this long because she learned to think before moving."

The words hit harder because they were true.

For years Adrian's power had taught him that movement solved problems.

Send men.

Move money.

Close streets.

Break alliances.

But Claire had survived without any of that.

By watching.

Waiting.

Noticing.

He looked again at the feed.

"What else is she telling us?"

Marcus studied the image.

Claire's body remained mostly still.

But her eyes kept moving toward something off-camera left.

Then down.

Then left again.

Rachel whispered, "Door?"

"No."

Adrian zoomed.

A reflection appeared in a metal surface behind Claire.

Red.

Blinking.

"Fire alarm."

Marcus understood.

"Building plans."

They pulled old St. Catherine plans.

Room 317 sat in the west wing.

Fire alarm panel outside the room.

There was also a maintenance tunnel beneath it.

Adrian smiled without humor.

"Claire found us an entrance."

They moved.

Rachel stayed with the penthouse medical team.

Luca finally called.

Adrian answered.

"Where were you?"

"Chasing the vehicle that took Claire."

"You lost it."

"Yes."

"Then meet us at St. Catherine."

Pause.

"How do you know she's there?"

"Claire told me."

Another pause.

"How?"

"Because she's smarter than all of us."

They arrived twenty-four minutes later.

The abandoned shelter looked dead from the street.

No lights.

Boarded windows.

Marcus led six trusted men through the maintenance tunnel.

Luca joined them.

Adrian stopped him near the stairs.

"One question."

"Now?"

"Did you know Eleanor?"

Luca's face changed.

Enough.

"Yes."

"How?"

"Not here."

"How?"

Luca exhaled.

"She worked with your father."

"Rachel says she worked for the hidden organization."

"She did."

"Is she alive?"

Luca looked at Adrian.

"I don't know."

Adrian drew closer.

"Wrong answer."

"It's the truth."

"Did you see her body?"

Luca's silence was answer enough.

Adrian laughed once.

"You taught me to verify everything."

"I know."

"But apparently graves were an exception."

Luca looked ashamed.

"Your father ordered me to stay out of Eleanor's death."

"Why?"

"I never knew."

"Then tonight you're going to find out."

They moved upstairs.

Room 317 was unlocked.

Empty.

A chair sat in the center.

Claire's chair.

Still warm.

On the floor lay a small piece of cream fabric.

Adrian picked it up.

Her cardigan.

Marcus examined the hallway.

"Moved recently."

Adrian looked at the wall.

Words had been written in black marker.

ASK HER WHY SHE REALLY DIVORCED YOU.

Adrian stared.

Luca muttered, "Psychological game."

"No."

Adrian knew Claire.

There was more.

They searched the room.

Behind the chair, scratched into the paint, Claire had written two letters.

B2.

"Basement two," Marcus said.

They ran.

The second basement level had not appeared on official building plans.

Luca found a hidden elevator behind an electrical panel.

"Your father's construction style," he said.

The elevator opened.

Adrian raised his gun.

Empty.

They descended.

At the bottom, they discovered a corridor lined with old offices.

Medical files filled shelves.

Thousands.

Women.

Children.

Families.

Lives reduced to folders.

At the end of the corridor, voices.

Thomas.

And Claire.

Adrian signaled his men to stop.

He moved closer.

Claire was speaking.

"You can't use my baby."

Thomas answered calmly.

"The child was always part of the structure."

"You sound insane."

"I sound like a man who understands inheritance."

"What do you want from Adrian?"

"Compliance."

"He'll never give it."

"He will for you."

Claire laughed bitterly.

"You really don't know him."

"I've known Adrian since he was a boy."

"Then you should know threatening me is the fastest way to make him burn everything you've built."

Thomas's voice hardened.

"Your mother said the same thing about your father."

Silence.

Claire whispered, "What?"

Thomas continued.

"Eleanor believed love made people brave."

A pause.

"It mostly makes them predictable."

Adrian wanted to enter.

Marcus stopped him.

Listen.

Thomas said, "Your mother could have lived quietly."

Claire's voice shook.

"She's alive?"

Thomas didn't answer.

"Is my mother alive?"

"You should ask Adrian's father."

Adrian froze.

His father had been dead fourteen years.

Claire sounded stunned.

"That's impossible."

Thomas laughed.

"Still believing funerals?"

Adrian felt Luca beside him go rigid.

Then footsteps approached from another hallway.

Marcus turned.

Three armed men.

The corridor erupted.

Adrian's team moved fast.

Two men dropped their weapons.

The third ran.

Inside the room, Thomas shouted.

Adrian kicked the door open.

Claire stood.

Thomas had a gun.

Not pointed at Claire.

Pointed at himself.

Adrian stopped.

Thomas smiled.

"You finally arrived."

"Put it down."

"No."

Claire stepped away from him.

Adrian moved toward her.

Thomas raised the gun higher.

"Don't."

Adrian stopped.

"If you shoot yourself, you solve my problem."

Thomas smiled.

"Not before you hear why Claire really left."

Adrian looked at Claire.

Her face changed.

"Don't listen."

Thomas laughed.

"Oh, he deserves this."

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"Thomas."

"What?"

Adrian asked.

Thomas looked delighted.

"The divorce wasn't Claire's idea."

Adrian stared at her.

Claire whispered, "I can explain."

Thomas continued.

"Someone ordered it."

"Who?"

Claire closed her eyes.

Thomas answered.

"Claire's mother."

Silence.

Adrian looked at Claire.

"Did you speak to Eleanor?"

Claire shook her head.

"Not exactly."

"What does that mean?"

Thomas reached into his coat.

Marcus raised his gun.

"Hands."

Thomas slowly withdrew an old phone.

He placed it on the table.

"Play the recording."

Adrian did.

Eleanor's voice filled the room.

Older than Adrian remembered.

But unmistakable.

"Claire, if you're hearing this, Adrian is already in danger. You need to leave him. You need to make him believe you chose yourself. If he searches for the truth, they will kill him exactly the way they killed his father."

The recording ended.

Adrian looked at Claire.

Tears ran down her face.

"I received that three days before I asked for the divorce."

He understood everything she had carried alone.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because the recording said you'd die if I did."

Adrian stepped toward her.

Thomas suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned.

"You still don't understand."

He lifted the pistol.

Not toward himself now.

Toward Adrian.

Marcus fired.

The shot struck Thomas's shoulder.

He fell.

Claire screamed.

Adrian moved to her.

Marcus kicked the weapon away.

Thomas lay bleeding, smiling.

"Too late."

Adrian looked down.

"For what?"

Thomas coughed.

"She found you."

"Who?"

Thomas's smile widened.

"Eleanor."

Every phone in the corridor rang at once.

Adrian's.

Marcus's.

Luca's.

Even Thomas's.

Adrian answered.

No voice.

Only a live video.

A woman stood outside St. Catherine.

Gray streaks through dark hair.

Older.

Thin.

Alive.

Claire came beside Adrian.

Her knees nearly failed.

"Mom."

The woman in the video looked directly at the camera.

Then she turned toward someone standing outside frame.

And said:

"Bring me my grandson before Adrian learns what his father did..."
