Chapter 1 - The Woman in the Rain

A woman collapsed beside the bus shelter and whispered, "Don't let him take my baby."

Adrian Vale arrived seconds later and found a hospital bracelet clenched in her hand.

One number had been scratched across the plastic.

Adrian knew this was not an accident.

For half a second, the entire city disappeared.

There was no traffic.

No rain.

No black SUV idling at the curb.

No Marcus standing six feet behind him with one hand inside his coat.

There was only Claire.

Two years earlier, Claire had walked out of Adrian's penthouse carrying one suitcase and a divorce agreement neither of them had wanted to sign.

Now she was lying against him beneath the glass shelter, her long brown hair stuck to her pale face, her cream cardigan soaked through, her breathing shallow.

And she was pregnant.

Adrian's hand hovered above the unmistakable curve beneath her dress.

He couldn't touch it at first.

Couldn't breathe.

"Claire?"

Her eyelids moved.

Nothing more.

Marcus crouched near them. "Ambulance is three minutes out."

"Cancel it."

Marcus looked at him.

Adrian raised his head.

It was the look that had ended arguments in warehouses, boardrooms, kitchens, and back rooms all over Chicago.

"My doctor."

"Already calling him."

Adrian carefully slid one arm behind Claire's shoulders and another beneath her knees.

She weighed almost nothing.

That terrified him more than the pregnancy.

Claire had never been fragile.

She had been five feet seven inches of stubbornness wrapped in expensive dresses and sharp opinions. She had once thrown a champagne flute at Adrian because he had assigned security to follow her into a bookstore.

She had once stood between Adrian and three armed men because she believed he was about to do something he would regret.

She had been the only person in Chicago who could look at Adrian Vale when he was furious and say, "Sit down."

And sometimes he actually did.

The woman in his arms barely resembled her.

"Boss," Marcus said quietly.

Adrian looked at him.

Marcus hesitated.

Bad sign.

Marcus Cole had worked for Adrian for eleven years. Former military. Forty years old. Scar over one eyebrow. He could report a dead body with the emotional variation of a parking attendant.

Tonight he looked disturbed.

"What?"

"We've been asking around."

Adrian stood with Claire in his arms.

"About?"

"Her."

"And?"

Marcus glanced toward Daniel, the younger guard beside the SUV.

Daniel looked away.

Adrian's voice dropped.

"And?"

Marcus answered.

"People around here know her."

Something cold moved through Adrian.

"How?"

"Soup kitchen two blocks west. Shelter on Harrison. A woman who runs a laundromat says Claire sometimes slept in the twenty-four-hour station when the shelters were full."

Adrian stared at him.

Marcus continued because stopping would have been worse.

"She hasn't had a permanent address in months."

"No."

"Boss—"

"No."

"I talked to three people."

"I sent her money."

Marcus said nothing.

That silence turned the rain colder.

Adrian carried Claire toward the SUV.

"Every month."

"I know."

"Twenty thousand."

"I know."

"For two years."

Marcus lowered his voice. "I know what you ordered."

Adrian stopped.

He looked at Marcus.

"What I ordered?"

Marcus didn't answer quickly enough.

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?"

"Get Claire somewhere safe first."

"Marcus."

The older man met his stare.

"We checked the transfer account while driving here."

"And?"

"The withdrawals weren't going to Claire."

Adrian felt Claire move weakly against his chest.

Her fingers caught the lapel of his coat.

"Adrian..."

He looked down instantly.

Her eyes remained closed.

"I'm here."

"No..."

Her voice was barely sound.

"No what?"

Her hand tightened.

"Don't..."

He bent closer.

"Claire, who did this?"

Her lips moved.

"Inside..."

Then she went limp.

Adrian's heart slammed hard enough to hurt.

"Claire."

No response.

"Claire!"

Marcus opened the SUV.

Adrian moved toward it—

Then stopped.

A white envelope sat in the middle of the rear seat.

Dry.

Perfectly dry.

It had not been there when the SUV left the restaurant.

His name was written across it.

ADRIAN VALE.

Daniel drew his weapon.

Marcus moved forward.

"Nobody touch it."

Adrian held Claire tighter.

"When did that get there?"

Daniel looked stunned. "I locked the car."

"Who had access?"

"No one."

Adrian looked around the rain-soaked street.

People moved beneath umbrellas.

Cars crawled past.

Windows towered above them.

Somewhere among all those lights, somebody might be watching.

Marcus leaned inside the vehicle without touching the envelope.

"There is something under it."

"What?"

Marcus used a pen to lift one corner.

A photograph.

He pulled it partially free.

Adrian saw Claire.

The photograph had been taken months earlier.

Claire stood outside a shelter wearing the same cream cardigan.

She was visibly pregnant.

On the back of the image, someone had written:

YOU SHOULD HAVE LET HER DISAPPEAR.

Daniel cursed.

Marcus looked at Adrian.

Adrian's expression became still.

Dangerously still.

"Take the envelope."

"Boss—"

"Take it."

Marcus carefully secured it inside an evidence pouch.

Adrian climbed into the SUV with Claire.

"Where's Dr. Bennett?"

"Safe house on Lakeview. Twelve minutes."

"Make it six."

The SUV accelerated.

Claire's head rested against Adrian's chest.

He covered her with his coat.

For the first time, he allowed himself to look directly at her stomach.

Pregnant.

His divorced wife was pregnant.

The obvious question tore through him.

Whose child?

Then shame followed immediately.

She was half-conscious, malnourished, and terrified, and his first instinct had still been possession.

He pushed the thought away.

"Claire."

Her breathing stayed shallow.

He touched her cheek.

Cold.

"You don't get to die tonight."

Marcus sat across from him.

Adrian looked up.

"Tell me everything."

"We only have fragments."

"I asked for everything."

Marcus exhaled.

"Your payments were routed through Vale Family Services."

"Correct."

"Administrative approval went through the main office."

"Correct."

"Records show every payment cleared."

"But?"

"The receiving account isn't Claire's."

Adrian stared at him.

"It's an account under a shell company."

"Owned by?"

"We don't know yet."

"You had ten minutes."

Marcus ignored the insult.

"Someone built it carefully. Money enters. Gets broken into smaller amounts. Moves through four accounts. Then disappears."

"For two years?"

"Yes."

"How did nobody notice?"

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"Because someone designed the reports specifically for you."

Adrian understood immediately.

His people did not merely steal money.

They stole certainty.

Every month, Adrian received a short report.

Payment completed.

Residence confirmed.

No security concerns.

Claire requested continued non-contact.

He had believed every line because respecting Claire's demand for distance had been the only decent thing he thought he could give her.

He had wanted to call.

Hundreds of times.

He had wanted to drive to wherever she lived and stand outside until she agreed to speak to him.

But the divorce had happened because Claire said his world was swallowing her alive.

So Adrian stayed away.

Or thought he had.

"Who prepared the reports?"

Marcus hesitated again.

"Several signatures."

"Names."

"Thomas Beckett. Aaron Pike. Elena Ruiz."

Adrian knew all three.

Thomas ran finances.

Aaron managed security intelligence.

Elena handled charitable accounts.

All trusted.

All inside.

Someone had corrupted at least one of them.

Maybe all.

Claire suddenly gasped.

Her body tensed.

Adrian's hand moved instinctively toward her stomach.

"What's happening?"

Marcus leaned forward. "Claire?"

Her eyes opened halfway.

For a second, she seemed not to recognize Adrian.

Then terror filled her face.

She tried to pull away.

"No!"

"Claire, it's me."

"Get away."

"It's Adrian."

"I know!"

That hurt worse.

She struggled weakly.

"Let me go."

"You'll fall."

"I can't be with you."

"Why?"

"Because he'll find me."

Adrian froze.

"Who?"

Claire stared past his shoulder.

At Marcus.

Her face changed.

Marcus noticed.

"Claire?"

She whispered, "No."

Adrian turned.

Marcus frowned.

"What?"

Claire tried to retreat farther into the seat.

Adrian put himself between them.

"Claire, look at me."

Her frightened eyes found his.

"Who are you afraid of?"

Her lips trembled.

She slowly raised one hand.

Not toward Marcus.

Toward the front of the SUV.

Toward the driver.

Adrian's eyes moved to the rearview mirror.

The driver's eyes met his reflection.

A man Adrian had known for seven years.

Samuel Crane.

Samuel immediately reached beneath the dashboard.

Marcus shouted.

Adrian pulled Claire down.

The SUV swerved violently.

Daniel grabbed the seat.

"Samuel!"

A metallic click sounded from the front.

Marcus lunged forward.

Samuel tore something from beneath the steering column and threw it through the partially open window.

A small black device vanished into the rain.

Then he slammed the brakes.

The SUV spun across two lanes.

A horn screamed.

Adrian shielded Claire with his body as the vehicle struck the curb.

Silence lasted one second.

Marcus drew his gun.

Samuel raised both hands.

"I wasn't trying to hurt anybody!"

"Don't move," Marcus said.

Adrian slowly sat upright.

Claire was breathing.

He checked her first.

Only then did he look at Samuel.

"What did you throw?"

Samuel swallowed.

"Tracker."

Nobody spoke.

"Whose?"

Samuel closed his eyes.

"They've been tracking you since the restaurant."

"Who?"

Samuel shook his head.

"I can't say."

Marcus pushed the barrel closer.

"Try."

Samuel's eyes went to Claire.

Then back to Adrian.

"If I tell you, my family dies."

Adrian's voice was quiet.

"If you don't tell me, Claire might."

Samuel's face broke.

"They told us she could never come back."

"Who is they?"

Samuel whispered something.

Adrian leaned forward.

"What?"

"Your house."

Adrian felt something inside him turn to ice.

"What about my house?"

Samuel's eyes filled with fear.

"They're already there."

Marcus looked at Adrian.

Samuel swallowed hard.

"They've been waiting for you to bring Claire home."

Adrian's phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

One photograph arrived.

It showed the inside of Adrian's penthouse.

His private office.

Someone was sitting behind his desk.

The message beneath it contained four words:

BRING CLAIRE TO ME.

Then another message appeared.

A name.

Adrian read it once.

May you like

His blood went cold.

Because the name on the screen belonged to a man Adrian had personally watched being buried three years ago...
