Chapter 14 - No More Running

Penny looked at the photograph.

Her old apartment.

Her packed boxes.

And one person reflected in the hallway mirror.

Evan Shaw.

The waiter.

The assassin had returned.

Police surrounded the building.

Penny stayed outside.

This time she didn't insist on entering.

Courage, she had learned, wasn't walking into every dangerous room.

Sometimes courage was allowing qualified people to do their jobs.

Evan was arrested attempting to leave through the roof.

Inside his bag was the final piece of Gabriel's network.

Names.

Payments.

Safe houses.

Every remaining active operative.

The unknown message had been his last attempt to frighten Penny into running.

It failed.

By morning, authorities had what they needed.

The network unraveled.

Gabriel remained in custody.

Derek faced charges connected both to Penny's abuse and the criminal conspiracy.

Evan faced his own prosecution.

Clara's son returned home.

Marco recovered.

Noah moved temporarily into Elaine's house.

And Penny?

Penny rented a new apartment.

Small.

Bright.

Entirely hers.

She chose the furniture.

She chose the dishes.

She bought the emerald dress she'd wanted in the first place.

Then she started therapy.

Some mornings were easy.

Others weren't.

A slammed door could still freeze her.

An angry male voice in a grocery store could make her pulse race.

Healing wasn't cinematic.

There was no single moment when fear vanished.

There were hundreds of small moments when Penny chose herself anyway.

Three months later, she testified.

Derek sat across the courtroom.

He looked smaller.

Not physically.

In her mind.

He no longer occupied every corner of the room.

When she finished, she walked past him without looking back.

Outside, Lorenzo waited with Elaine and Noah.

"You didn't have to come," Penny said.

Lorenzo shrugged.

"Marco wanted lunch."

Marco, still using a cane, frowned.

"Why am I getting blamed?"

Penny laughed.

It came naturally.

That surprised her.

Lorenzo had changed too.

He began dismantling the criminal parts of the Moretti organization.

Not overnight.

Not cleanly.

But deliberately.

He cooperated where he could and separated legitimate businesses from everything Anthony and Gabriel had built.

Penny refused her share of questionable assets.

She accepted only the legitimate trust Anthony had created for his children.

Noah did the same.

Together, they used part of it to establish emergency housing for people escaping abusive partners.

Penny insisted on one rule.

Nobody entering the program would ever be asked:

Why didn't you leave sooner?

Six months after the restaurant, Penny returned there.

Alone.

She stood outside for five minutes.

Then went in.

Same chandeliers.

Same tables.

Different woman.

The maître d' recognized her.

"Ms. Brooks."

"Table for one."

He smiled.

"Of course."

She sat near the window.

Ordered exactly what she wanted.

Including dessert.

Halfway through it, someone approached.

Penny's body tensed automatically.

Then relaxed.

Lorenzo.

"You're following me."

"No."

"Coincidence?"

"Mostly."

She pointed at the empty chair.

"You can sit."

He did.

Penny took another bite of chocolate cake.

Lorenzo looked amused.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"You have a face."

"I was thinking about the first time I saw you at this table."

Penny set down her fork.

"I don't want that night to be the most important thing that ever happened to me."

"It shouldn't be."

"It won't be."

Her phone vibrated.

Elaine.

Penny smiled.

Then she saw the message.

COME TO THE HOUSE. I FOUND SOMETHING YOUR FATHER LEFT FOR YOU AND NOAH.

Penny showed Lorenzo.

His expression changed.

"Anthony?"

Apparently.

They drove to Elaine's house.

Noah was already there.

A wooden box sat on the dining table.

Elaine had discovered it inside an old wall at Bellweather Road.

Two names were carved into the lid.

PENELOPE.

NOAH.

Penny touched hers.

Inside were two letters.

One for each child.

And beneath them was a small cassette tape.

Lorenzo found an old player.

Penny inserted the tape.

Static filled the room.

Then Anthony Moretti's voice spoke.

"Penny. Noah. If you're hearing this, there is one final thing you need to know about your mother."

Elaine went pale.

Penny slowly turned toward her.

May you like

The recording continued.

And then Anthony said the sentence Elaine had spent twenty-eight years trying to keep buried...
