Chapter 7 - Simone's Confession

Helena Cole had been alive for eighteen years.

Adrien couldn't understand the sentence.

His mother stood ten feet away.

Older.

Thinner.

But unmistakable.

"Mom?"

Helena's face broke.

"Adrien."

He didn't move.

Mara understood why.

Too many ghosts had returned.

Too many people he trusted had lied.

Helena approached slowly.

"I don't expect forgiveness."

Richard backed toward the door.

Pike blocked him.

Helena looked at her brother-in-law.

"You should have stayed away from Mara."

Richard's composure vanished.

"You should have stayed dead."

That was enough.

Helena explained everything.

Adrien's father had discovered Richard siphoning money from the family companies.

He planned to remove him.

Then he died in what everyone believed was an accident.

Helena suspected Richard.

She gathered evidence.

Victor, then a young security officer, discovered what she was doing.

Richard threatened Adrien.

Helena disappeared to protect her son.

It had been a terrible choice.

But fear had convinced her it was the only one.

Mara listened carefully.

The pattern was obvious.

Richard separated people.

Made them afraid.

Then convinced them disappearance was protection.

He had done it to Helena.

Victor had done it to Mara.

Adrien looked at his mother.

"You watched me believe you were dead."

Helena cried.

"Yes."

"Eighteen years."

"I know."

"You don't know."

He walked away.

Mara didn't follow.

Some grief required space.

Richard was detained based on the financial evidence and testimony.

But Victor remained missing.

And one question remained.

Simone.

She asked to speak with Mara privately.

They sat in the nursery.

The room where everything had begun.

"I owe you the truth," Simone said.

"You owe me several."

Simone accepted that.

"My affair with Adrien ended four months before the gala."

Mara's face remained still.

"He told me it ended eight months before."

Simone winced.

"Then he lied."

Mara almost laughed.

At least some things were simple.

"I hated you," Simone said.

"That's flattering."

"I thought you had everything."

Mara looked around the nursery.

"I didn't."

"I know that now."

Simone's voice softened.

"Victor used my jealousy. He told me Adrien would eventually leave you. He offered me money to pass information."

"And you did."

"Yes."

"What changed?"

"You got pregnant."

Mara frowned.

Simone looked ashamed.

"I saw you at a charity luncheon. Everyone was taking photographs. You were smiling. Then you went into the bathroom."

Mara remembered.

She had been six months pregnant.

She had cried alone in a stall because Adrien had canceled dinner again.

"I heard you crying," Simone said. "And suddenly you weren't the woman who had stolen the life I wanted. You were just a woman whose husband was hurting her."

Mara's eyes stung.

"I realized I was helping him do it."

Simone began collecting evidence.

Victor discovered her.

He used her brother as leverage.

The night of the gala, Simone wore the earrings deliberately.

She wanted Mara suspicious.

She wanted her alert.

"But when the attack started," Simone whispered, "I screamed for Adrien."

Mara looked at her.

"I know."

"I was terrified."

"And he came."

"Yes."

Simone's eyes filled.

"I've hated myself for that moment for three years."

Mara didn't comfort her.

But she understood.

Fear revealed people.

It didn't always reveal them kindly.

"Why return now?"

"Because Victor contacted me six months ago."

"What did he want?"

"Information about Noah."

Mara stiffened.

"I gave him nothing."

"Can you prove that?"

Simone handed her a phone.

Messages.

Victor's threats.

Simone's refusals.

Then one final recording.

Victor said:

"Richard is finished. We move to the boy."

Mara stopped breathing.

"When was this?"

"Yesterday."

She stood.

Adrien entered.

He saw Mara's face.

"What?"

"Noah."

They called Elena.

Safe.

Mara exhaled.

Then Elena added something.

"But someone delivered a package."

Inside was a wooden toy train.

Adrien recognized it.

The same model Noah had played with in his childhood train room.

Attached underneath was a note.

A SON FOR A SON.

Adrien went pale.

Richard had lost his son years ago.

A young man named Michael.

Adrien had been told Michael died overseas.

Helena read the note.

Then whispered:

"Michael isn't dead."

Everyone looked at her.

"Richard hid him."

"Why?" Mara asked.

Helena looked at Adrien.

"Because Michael was the original heir."

Silence.

Adrien frowned.

"That's impossible."

"No."

Helena reached into her bag.

She removed an old legal document.

Adrien's father had originally planned to divide control between Adrien and Michael.

Then Michael discovered Richard's financial crimes.

Richard made his own son disappear.

Everything Victor had done was about recovering control Richard believed belonged to his branch of the family.

But Richard had failed to understand something.

Michael was alive.

And according to Helena, he had been gathering evidence for years.

"Where is he?" Adrien asked.

Helena looked toward Mara.

"He contacted me after Mara returned."

"Why?"

"Because he has Victor."

The room went silent.

Helena's phone vibrated.

A message.

One address.

One photograph.

Victor sat tied to a chair, alive and apparently unharmed.

Beside him stood a man in his late thirties.

Michael Cole.

But Mara wasn't looking at Michael.

She was looking at the background.

A child's blue jacket hung over a chair.

Noah's jacket.

Mara ran upstairs.

Noah's room was empty.

The window stood open.

And on his pillow was a note written in a child's shaky handwriting:

Mommy, Uncle Michael said Dad needs me.
