Chapter 6 - The Friend Who Lied

Adrien reached the stairs before anyone else.

Mara followed.

"Noah!"

The bedroom door was open.

Noah stood inside.

Beside him was Daniel Cross.

The former guard held no weapon.

He held a folder.

Elena stood several feet away, tense.

Cross raised both hands.

"I'm not here to hurt him."

Adrien moved between Cross and Noah.

"You have five seconds."

Cross put the folder down.

"Victor sent me to steal the archive drives."

"We know."

"I copied them first."

Everyone stopped.

Cross looked at Mara.

"Victor thinks I destroyed the originals."

"Why help us?"

"Because I saw what he did three years ago."

Cross had been part of the exterior security team.

He had seen Mara and Pike leave through the tunnel.

He had also heard Victor ordering the pursuit.

"Why didn't you tell Adrien?"

"Because Victor had people everywhere."

Adrien's expression darkened.

Cross continued.

"I watched Mara disappear. Then I watched Mr. Cole spend three years looking for her. At some point, loyalty stopped meaning what Victor said it meant."

Mara opened the folder.

Inside were copies of internal communications.

One message stood out.

Victor to an unknown recipient.

COLE TO GARAGE. WIFE UPSTAIRS. PROCEED.

Another:

IF PIKE FAILS, CLOSE TUNNEL.

Mara looked at Adrien.

There it was.

Proof.

Adrien hadn't ordered the tunnel sealed knowing she was inside.

Victor had manipulated the timing.

But another message mattered more.

It had been sent after Mara escaped.

THE CHILD LIVES. CHANGE PLAN.

Recipient initials:

R.C.

Adrien frowned.

"I don't know anyone with those initials."

Pike did.

His face went pale.

"Richard Cole."

Adrien stared at him.

"My uncle?"

Richard Cole had helped raise Adrien after his father died.

He had retired years earlier.

He lived quietly in Connecticut.

He attended Christmas dinners.

He had comforted Adrien after Mara disappeared.

He had stood beside him at the empty memorial Adrien eventually held.

"No," Adrien said.

Pike handed him another page.

Financial transfers.

Richard's name.

Victor's companies.

Millions.

Mara watched Adrien absorb the betrayal.

Victor wasn't the architect.

He was the operator.

Richard Cole had been behind him.

"Why?" Mara asked.

Adrien knew.

"My father left Richard almost nothing."

The family business had gone to Adrien.

Richard had spent decades pretending it didn't matter.

Apparently it did.

The gala plan changed.

They would invite Richard.

Mara insisted.

Adrien resisted.

Then remembered what she had said.

No more deciding for her.

The invitations went out.

Two nights later, Blackthorn House filled again.

Mara wore deep green.

Noah remained safely elsewhere with Elena.

Adrien stood beside Mara.

Not in front of her.

Beside her.

That distinction mattered.

Richard arrived at eight.

Gray-haired.

Elegant.

Warm smile.

He hugged Adrien.

Then looked at Mara.

"My God."

His performance was excellent.

"Mara."

She allowed him to embrace her.

"I thought we'd lost you."

"I'm sure you did."

Something flickered in his eyes.

The evening began.

Board members gathered.

Attorneys waited.

Simone remained hidden in a side room.

Pike monitored communications.

Cross controlled the archive.

Everything depended on Victor appearing.

At 9:43 p.m., he did.

Not physically.

Every screen in the ballroom turned black.

Then Victor's face appeared.

Guests murmured.

"Good evening, Adrien."

Adrien looked around.

"Victor."

"I see you've recovered something you lost."

Mara stepped forward.

Victor smiled.

"Mrs. Cole."

"You're difficult to kill."

Adrien's hands clenched.

Mara didn't react.

"You're difficult to impress."

Victor's smile faded.

She continued.

"You wanted everyone here. They're here."

Richard remained silent.

Victor began presenting documents.

Mara's disappearance.

Her hidden identity.

Noah's concealed birth.

Evidence carefully arranged to suggest instability, manipulation, and fraud.

Then Mara asked one question.

"Who told you Noah survived?"

Victor paused.

"Excuse me?"

"You sent a message three years ago. 'The child lives. Change plan.' Who were you talking to?"

Richard's wineglass stopped halfway to his mouth.

Mara saw it.

So did Adrien.

Victor's face changed.

The screens went dark.

Mara turned toward Richard.

He smiled faintly.

Then applauded.

Slowly.

"Very good."

Adrien looked at the man who had helped raise him.

"Uncle."

Richard placed down his glass.

"You always were emotional where Mara was concerned."

Adrien stepped toward him.

Mara touched Adrien's arm.

Not yet.

Richard looked at her.

"You've become impressive."

"I had a difficult teacher."

Richard smiled.

"Victor?"

"You."

For the first time, Richard looked genuinely amused.

"You think documents will save you?"

"No."

Mara looked toward the ballroom doors.

"I think the person standing behind those doors might."

Richard's smile disappeared.

The doors opened.

A woman entered.

Older.

Silver-haired.

Adrien stared at her.

Impossible.

His mother had been declared dead eighteen years earlier.

Yet the woman walking toward them wore the same small gold pendant Adrien remembered from childhood.

Richard whispered:

"Helena."

Adrien couldn't breathe.

The woman looked directly at him.

May you like

Then she said:

"Your father didn't die the way Richard told you."
