Chapter 12 - The Man Behind Liam

The damaged recording did not contain the name.

But Evelyn did.

Beatrice faced her mother.

“Tell me.”

Evelyn whispered, “Chloe.”

Arthur stood so quickly his chair fell.

“No.”

Chloe stared.

“What?”

Evelyn cried.

“Victoria couldn't have children.”

Victoria closed her eyes.

Arthur looked at his wife.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“Chloe is Daniel’s daughter?”

Victoria nodded.

The room seemed to contract.

Beatrice looked at Chloe.

Her stepsister.

Her tormentor.

Her biological half-sister.

Chloe laughed once.

“No.”

Nobody answered.

“No.”

She backed away.

“You're saying the woman I've hated my entire life because I thought Dad loved her more is actually my sister?”

Beatrice’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Chloe looked at Arthur.

“You knew?”

“No.”

At Victoria.

“You did.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Gabriel would have killed both of you.”

Chloe turned toward Beatrice.

Years of cruelty stood between them.

So did blood.

Neither knew what to do with either.

Finally Chloe whispered, “I am so sorry.”

Beatrice stepped closer.

“For what part?”

“All of it.”

“That is a lot.”

“I know.”

Beatrice almost smiled through her tears.

“Yes. It is.”

Chloe started sobbing.

Beatrice embraced her.

Not because everything was forgiven.

Because forgiveness could begin before it was finished.

Arthur sat down.

He looked devastated.

“Daniel trusted me with both his daughters and I didn't even know.”

Victoria said, “You raised Chloe as yours.”

“She is mine.”

Chloe looked at him.

Arthur repeated it.

“You are my daughter. Whatever a document says.”

Beatrice felt the words differently now.

Arthur looked at her too.

“So are you.”

This time, she believed he meant it.

The ownership structure now made sense.

Daniel had divided ultimate authority between his daughters.

Neither could dissolve the network alone.

It had been intentional.

A final safeguard against one person becoming too powerful.

Beatrice looked at Chloe.

“We have to decide together.”

Chloe wiped her face.

“Destroy it.”

“Not yet.”

Chloe frowned.

Beatrice explained the innocent assets.

Hospitals.

Pensions.

Charities.

Employees.

“We separate them first.”

“How long?”

“Months.”

Dominic said, “Maybe a year.”

Chloe nodded.

“Then we do it right.”

For the first time, the sisters made a decision together.

Liam entered under federal escort to give additional testimony.

When he learned Chloe’s identity, he looked stunned.

Then almost amused.

“What?”

Chloe asked.

“Your father spent years trying to control Daniel’s heirs.”

His smile disappeared.

“And he never realized he was sleeping with one of them.”

Chloe grimaced.

“Please never phrase anything like that again.”

Even Beatrice laughed.

Liam faced Dominic.

“I owe you an apology.”

“You owe several courts testimony.”

“That too.”

“Did you love her?”

Liam looked at Chloe.

“Yes.”

Chloe looked away.

“But I also used her.”

“Yes.”

“I don't expect her to forgive me.”

Chloe finally looked at him.

“Good.”

Beatrice recognized her own words and raised an eyebrow.

Chloe shrugged.

“Sisters borrow things.”

The levity lasted only seconds.

Liam had one more piece of information.

Gabriel was not the highest authority.

Everyone stared.

“The Custodian wasn't my father.”

Victoria frowned.

“I was.”

“After you disappeared, somebody replaced you.”

“Who?”

“I never knew his name.”

Liam placed a photograph on the table.

A man entering a private meeting.

Only the back of his head visible.

Arthur stared at it.

“I know that suit.”

Dominic frowned.

“You identify people by suits?”

“When you've spent thirty years in politics, yes.”

Arthur enlarged the photograph.

A distinctive cuff link appeared.

A silver eagle.

Arthur went pale.

“He was Daniel's supervisor.”

Beatrice remembered the personnel file.

The federal agent listed above Daniel.

Not Marco.

Marco had merely been the field contact.

The supervisor was another man.

Richard Vale.

Now retired.

Former deputy director.

Publicly respected.

Privately untouchable.

Arthur whispered, “He's the man who told us Daniel was dead.”

Evelyn covered her mouth.

“He controlled the investigation.”

Dominic understood.

“He gave Gabriel information.”

Victoria shook her head.

“No.”

“What?”

“Gabriel gave him information.”

Silence.

“Vale created the network,” Victoria said.

Gabriel had never been the architect.

Only another ambitious participant.

Daniel had been fighting Vale from the beginning.

Beatrice felt exhausted.

“Where is he?”

Arthur looked at the photograph metadata.

It had been taken that morning.

Inside Davenport Tower.

Everyone froze.

Dominic called security.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

The lights flickered.

Then the building’s intercom activated.

An older man’s voice filled the room.

“Beatrice Hayes.”

Dominic moved toward the door.

It locked.

Vale continued.

“Your father and I disagreed about many things.”

Beatrice looked toward the ceiling speaker.

“Come say it to my face.”

A soft laugh.

“You are Daniel’s daughter.”

A hidden panel at the back of the conference room clicked open.

Behind it was an elevator nobody knew existed.

Its doors slid apart.

Empty.

On the floor lay a single silver eagle cuff link.

Then Vale’s voice returned.

“If you want the final page of your father’s ledger, come down.”

The elevator button illuminated.

SUBLEVEL FOUR.

Davenport Tower only had three sublevels.

May you like

Beatrice reached for Dominic’s hand.

The elevator doors began to close...
