Chapter 11 - The Trap at Davenport Tower

Beatrice stared at Chloe.
“You're with them?”
Chloe shook her head quickly.
“No.”
Marco pressed the gun against her back.
“She isn't.”
Dominic moved slightly.
Marco noticed.
“Don't.”
“Marco.”
“I'm sorry.”
Dominic’s voice was colder than anger.
“Are you?”
“Yes.”
“Then lower the weapon.”
“I can't.”
Gabriel emerged behind him.
“Loyalty is such an expensive illusion.”
Beatrice looked at Chloe.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Gabriel smiled.
“You still care.”
“She is my sister.”
“She spent years humiliating you.”
“That says something about her choices. Not mine.”
Chloe started crying.
Gabriel rolled his eyes.
“Touching.”
He demanded the key.
Beatrice refused.
Gabriel revealed his real plan.
The second archive contained Daniel’s final evidence.
Not merely financial records.
A recording of Daniel’s last meeting with Gabriel.
Proof of murder.
Gabriel needed it destroyed.
“Then destroy it yourself,” Beatrice said.
“I can't access the final compartment.”
“Because?”
“Daniel keyed it to your biometric record.”
She almost laughed.
“My father planned twenty-eight years ahead?”
“He planned for you.”
Gabriel forced them toward a biometric safe.
Beatrice placed her hand against the reader.
ACCESS GRANTED.
The compartment opened.
Inside sat one videotape.
Gabriel reached.
Beatrice grabbed it first.
He raised his gun.
Dominic moved between them.
“Give it to him.”
Beatrice stared at Dominic.
“What?”
“Give it to him.”
Gabriel smiled.
Beatrice understood Dominic's expression.
She handed over the tape.
Gabriel snapped it.
Pulled the film out.
Destroyed it.
Then laughed.
“Daniel finally lost.”
“No,” Beatrice said.
Gabriel frowned.
“That wasn't the original.”
His smile disappeared.
Beatrice pointed toward the ceiling.
“You spent twenty-eight years looking for Daniel's evidence and never asked why a man obsessed with redundancy would keep one copy.”
Arthur smiled.
For the first time Gabriel looked uncertain.
Beatrice continued.
“The moment I opened the compartment, its contents uploaded.”
“To where?”
Dominic answered.
“Every independent archive Daniel established.”
Gabriel raised his gun.
Marco grabbed his arm.
The shot hit the ceiling.
Dominic tackled Gabriel.
Arthur pulled Chloe away.
Federal agents entered through the hidden passage.
This time they were led by an independent prosecutor Arthur had contacted.
Gabriel was restrained.
Marco surrendered.
Dominic looked at him.
“Why?”
Marco lowered his head.
“Gabriel paid for my sister’s treatment when nobody else would.”
“You could have told me.”
“I was ashamed.”
Dominic's anger softened.
“You still betrayed me.”
“I know.”
“And you'll answer for it.”
Marco nodded.
“I know.”
There would be consequences.
But not execution.
Not revenge.
Beatrice realized that was the difference between Dominic and the man everyone believed him to be.
Hours later, Gabriel was placed into secure federal custody under independent supervision.
The evidence was duplicated across jurisdictions.
There would be no convenient disappearance this time.
Yet one question remained.
Victoria.
She had forged Beatrice's adoption paperwork.
Transferred her assets.
Allowed Chloe to benefit.
Arthur confronted her.
“Did you plan to kill Beatrice?”
Victoria stared at him.
“No.”
“Then why the death clause?”
“To make others believe I would.”
Everyone fell silent.
Victoria looked at Beatrice.
“I needed Gabriel to think I was corrupt enough to cooperate.”
“You stole from me.”
“I moved your assets where Gabriel couldn't seize them.”
“Into Chloe’s trust.”
“Which I controlled.”
Beatrice shook her head.
“You could have told Arthur.”
“Arthur couldn't keep a secret from Evelyn.”
Arthur almost protested.
Then reconsidered.
“Fair.”
Victoria continued.
“I did terrible things to preserve leverage.”
“Including abandoning Chloe?”
Victoria's face changed.
That wound was real.
“Yes.”
Chloe turned away.
Victoria whispered, “I thought staying dead kept you safe.”
Chloe laughed bitterly.
“Apparently every parent in this family thinks disappearing is love.”
Nobody had an answer.
Beatrice looked at Evelyn.
Evelyn looked ashamed.
Perhaps that was where healing began.
Not with excuses.
With recognition.
Dominic’s phone buzzed.
He read the message.
“What?”
“The upload completed.”
Daniel’s recording had been recovered.
Beatrice stared.
“Can we watch it?”
“Yes.”
They returned to Davenport Tower.
In the secure conference room, Dominic connected the archive.
Daniel Hayes appeared on-screen.
Young.
Tired.
Alive.
Beatrice covered her mouth.
“My name is Daniel Hayes. If this recording is being watched, then Gabriel Russo has likely discovered what I did.”
Beatrice sat.
Daniel described the network.
The holding companies.
The failsafe.
Then he looked directly into the camera.
“And if my daughter Beatrice is watching…”
Her breath broke.
“I am sorry I couldn't stay.”
Dominic quietly took her hand beneath the table.
Daniel continued.
“You were never supposed to inherit my war. You were supposed to inherit my choice.”
Beatrice cried.
“Dissolve it if you can. Reform it if you must. But never become its prisoner.”
The recording flickered.
Then Daniel said something unexpected.
“One more thing. Arthur Davenport believes Beatrice is my only child.”
Arthur looked up.
Evelyn went white.
Beatrice turned toward her mother.
Daniel continued.
“He is wrong.”
Nobody moved.
“I had another child.”
Chloe whispered, “What?”
Daniel looked into the camera.
“And if both of my daughters are alive, they must know the truth before either signs the dissolution documents.”
Beatrice stared at Evelyn.
“Another daughter?”
Evelyn could not look at her.
Beatrice stood.
“Mom.”
Daniel’s recording continued.
“The second child’s name is…”
May you like
The video froze.
Then the screen went black...
