Chapter 2 - The Woman in the Red Dress

Rachel moved before I did.
She shoved the trust documents into her bag and stepped beside my bed just as Dr. Hale entered.
He stopped.
"Ms. Bennett."
"Doctor."
Neither smiled.
Dr. Hale looked at me.
Then at the monitor.
Then back at Rachel.
"Mrs. Mercer needs rest."
Rachel folded her arms.
"She's getting it."
"I was told you were leaving."
"By whom?"
His jaw tightened.
"Ethan."
Rachel smiled without warmth.
"Interesting. Ethan isn't my client."
Dr. Hale came farther into the room.
"I need to examine Claire."
"Why?"
"Her contractions."
"I haven't had one in nearly forty minutes," I said.
His eyes snapped toward me.
For a moment, something passed between us.
Fear?
Suspicion?
I couldn't tell.
Dr. Hale stepped toward the IV pump.
"I'd still like to check your medication."
Rachel immediately raised her phone.
"I'm recording this visit for Claire's medical records."
He stopped.
"You don't have permission."
"Claire does."
I said, "I give permission."
His face changed.
Barely.
But enough.
"That's unnecessary."
"So is an emergency procedure when I'm medically stable," I said.
Silence.
Dr. Hale finally stepped away from the IV.
"We'll reassess in the morning."
Then he left.
Rachel waited until the door shut.
"He's scared."
"So am I."
"Good."
I stared at her.
"Good?"
"Fear keeps you careful."
She pulled a chair close.
"Claire, this changes our approach. We don't accuse Ethan tonight."
"Why not call police now?"
"Because what you overheard is serious, but we need evidence strong enough that he can't explain it away as misunderstood conversation."
"Half a million dollars is hard to misunderstand."
"Did you record that part?"
I shook my head.
Rachel exhaled.
"Then right now we have your testimony and whatever we can gather from this point forward."
I hated that she was right.
"What do we do?"
"We make him believe everything is normal."
The next morning, sunlight filled the hospital room.
I hadn't slept.
Ethan had.
He spent the night curled in the recliner beside me like a devoted husband.
At 6:15 a.m., he woke and smiled.
"Morning, beautiful."
I wanted to throw the water pitcher at him.
Instead, I whispered, "Morning."
He kissed my hand.
"You ready to meet our daughter?"
Our daughter.
I wondered how he could say it without choking.
At 7:20, Dr. Hale returned.
This time, Rosa came with him.
She never looked at me directly, which was exactly what I needed.
"Contractions are becoming more regular," Hale said.
"We may induce."
Ethan leaned forward.
"Today?"
"Possibly."
He looked almost relieved.
My stomach twisted.
"What medication?" I asked.
Hale named two standard drugs.
Rachel had spent half the night contacting another obstetrician, Dr. Naomi Pierce, who practiced at the same hospital.
At 7:32, Naomi walked into the room.
Dr. Hale stopped speaking.
"Morning," she said.
Ethan frowned.
"Who are you?"
"Dr. Pierce. Mrs. Mercer requested a second opinion."
Ethan looked at me.
"You did?"
I made my voice small.
"I got scared during the night."
His face softened instantly.
Of course it did.
Ethan was excellent at pretending.
"You should've told me."
"I didn't want to worry you."
Naomi reviewed my chart.
Then she turned to Hale.
"I'd like to co-manage."
Hale's expression became rigid.
"That isn't necessary."
"It is now."
Ethan stood.
"Claire trusts Dr. Hale."
I looked directly at my husband.
"Actually, I want both."
A beat passed.
Then he smiled.
"Whatever makes you comfortable."
That was the first moment I knew he was losing control.
By noon, my contractions were stronger.
My daughter was coming whether Ethan's plan was ready or not.
Rachel remained nearby under the excuse of reviewing company paperwork.
Rosa quietly arranged for every medication administered to me to require double verification.
Dr. Pierce ordered new IV tubing.
New fluids.
New medication seals.
Nothing entered my body without another nurse witnessing it.
Ethan noticed.
"Why all the precautions?"
Naomi answered casually.
"Standard for high-risk deliveries."
He nodded.
But his eyes moved toward Hale.
Hale didn't look back.
At 1:40 p.m., Madison appeared.
Red dress.
Perfect hair.
Five-month pregnant belly.
She stood beyond the glass wall pretending to check her phone.
I almost laughed.
How stupid had I been?
Every clue had been visible.
I just hadn't known where to look.
Ethan saw her.
His face changed.
Only slightly.
Then he said, "I'm going to stretch my legs."
"Of course."
He left.
Rachel moved immediately.
"Want to know what they're saying?"
"How?"
She showed me her phone.
"The hall security camera has audio."
"What?"
"The hospital's general counsel is an old friend."
"Rachel—"
"Don't ask."
She opened a live feed.
We watched Ethan walk toward Madison.
Their voices were faint but clear.
"You shouldn't be here," Ethan hissed.
"You stopped answering."
"Claire could see you."
"She's about to deliver."
"Exactly."
Madison grabbed his arm.
"And after?"
"After what?"
"After she's gone."
My entire body went cold.
Ethan glanced around.
"Keep your voice down."
"I want to know when you're telling everyone about us."
"Soon."
"You promised we'd be together before our son was born."
Son.
Rachel squeezed my hand.
Madison continued.
"I didn't agree to spend my pregnancy hiding."
Ethan whispered, "This all ends today."
I looked at Rachel.
She looked at me.
We had it.
Not everything.
But enough to prove there was a plan.
Then Madison said something unexpected.
"What if the doctor backs out?"
Ethan's expression hardened.
"He won't."
"How do you know?"
"Because I have something on him."
Rachel immediately paused the recording.
"What something?"
"I don't know."
"We need to find out."
My contraction hit before I could answer.
Pain ripped across my abdomen.
I gasped.
The monitor changed.
Rosa ran in.
"Claire?"
Another contraction came almost immediately.
Naomi followed.
"She's progressing fast."
Ethan returned.
"What's happening?"
"Labor."
The next ninety minutes disappeared into pain.
Real pain.
The kind that made betrayal seem briefly irrelevant.
I held Rosa's hand.
Then Rachel's.
Then Ethan tried to hold mine.
I let him.
That was the hardest part.
Every time I screamed, he stroked my hair.
Every time I shook, he told me I was strong.
Every time he whispered, "I'm here," I remembered his voice saying, Infect her.
By 4:10 p.m., I was seven centimeters dilated.
By 5:00, nine.
Dr. Hale returned wearing surgical scrubs.
Naomi stood beside him.
"I'll handle the delivery," she said.
Hale stared at her.
"I am the attending physician."
"And I'm co-managing at the patient's request."
Ethan stepped between them.
"Claire chose Dr. Hale months ago."
I looked at him.
"I changed my mind."
His face went still.
"Why?"
The room quieted.
Too quiet.
I could have exposed everything.
Instead, I smiled weakly.
"Because Dr. Pierce is a woman."
Rosa almost choked.
Rachel looked at the floor.
Ethan forced a laugh.
"Okay."
But Hale knew.
I saw it.
The question in his eyes.
What had I heard?
At 5:24, they moved me toward delivery.
The hallway lights passed overhead one by one.
Ethan walked beside the bed.
Rachel followed until a nurse stopped her.
"Family only beyond this point."
Rachel leaned down and hugged me.
In my ear she whispered, "The police are downstairs."
My heart kicked.
"What?"
"Quiet. They need more before they move."
"How much more?"
"Enough that he can't walk."
Then she stepped back.
Ethan asked, "What did she say?"
"She told me I'm going to be okay."
He kissed my forehead.
"You are."
The delivery room doors opened.
Dr. Pierce entered first.
Rosa followed.
Dr. Hale came behind them.
Ethan stood near my shoulder.
Everything looked normal.
Except it wasn't.
Because two hospital administrators were behind the observation glass.
And Rachel was standing beside them.
And somewhere below us, detectives were waiting.
Labor intensified.
I pushed.
I screamed.
I begged.
Then I heard it.
A baby's cry.
The most beautiful sound I had ever heard.
My daughter.
Alive.
They placed her against my chest.
She was tiny and pink and furious.
I laughed and cried at the same time.
"Hi," I whispered. "Hi, sweetheart."
Ethan stared at her.
For one terrible second, I saw genuine emotion on his face.
Then Dr. Hale moved toward my IV.
Rosa stepped in front of him.
"I've got it."
"I need to administer the post-delivery medication."
"Dr. Pierce already ordered it."
Hale's voice hardened.
"Move."
Ethan looked toward him.
Their eyes met.
There it was.
The signal.
My skin went cold.
Dr. Pierce turned.
"What are you administering?"
Hale held up a syringe.
"Routine antibiotic."
Naomi reached for it.
"I'll verify."
Hale pulled his hand back.
Everyone froze.
Rosa looked at him.
Naomi looked at him.
I looked at Ethan.
And Ethan looked at the syringe.
Dr. Pierce spoke carefully.
"Doctor, give me the medication."
Hale's fingers tightened.
Then the delivery-room door opened behind him.
Rachel walked in.
She wasn't alone.
A detective entered beside her.
Ethan's face emptied.
Rachel held up her phone.
"We heard everything in the hallway."
Ethan stepped backward.
"What is this?"
Dr. Hale dropped the syringe onto the tray.
The detective said, "Nobody touch that."
My daughter began crying against my chest.
Ethan looked at me.
For the first time since the nightmare began, I stopped pretending.
"I heard you last night."
His lips parted.
"Claire—"
"Every word."
Madison appeared behind the observation glass.
She had followed them upstairs.
When she saw the detective, she turned to run.
Another officer blocked the hallway.
Ethan stared at her.
Then at Hale.
Then at me.
His entire plan was collapsing.
But the detective wasn't looking at Ethan anymore.
He was staring at the syringe on the tray.
Dr. Pierce picked up the medication packaging beside it.
Her expression changed.
"Wait."
She read the label again.
Then looked straight at Dr. Hale.
"This isn't an antibiotic."
No one moved.
Naomi's voice dropped.
"Where did this come from?"
Dr. Hale went pale.
And before he could answer, one of the nurses whispered a single word.
"Septicemia."
The detective reached for his handcuffs.
But Dr. Hale suddenly pointed at Ethan.
"He made me do it."
Ethan's face snapped toward him.
May you like
And Hale shouted the one sentence nobody in that room expected.
"He already tried once."
