Chapter 8 - The Woman Who Saved the Mafia Boss

The Romano empire had survived wars.

It had survived betrayals.

It had survived enemies who came from outside the organization and tried to tear everything apart.

But Vincent Romano never imagined the greatest threat would come from the man standing beside him.

Silas Moretti.

The man who knew every weakness.

Every secret.

Every vulnerability.

And worst of all…

The man who knew Isabella.

That was what made the betrayal unbearable.

Because Vincent could understand an enemy wanting power.

He could understand greed.

He could understand ambition.

But Silas had not simply attacked his empire.

He had entered his home.

He had shaken Isabella’s hand.

He had watched Vincent mourn.

He had stood beside her funeral.

And all along, he knew the truth.

The night after the emergency meeting, Vincent did not sleep.

He sat alone in Isabella’s old office.

A place he had avoided for two years.

The room still looked exactly the same.

Her books remained on the shelves.

Her favorite chair sat near the window.

A small vase still held dried flowers she had once loved.

Vincent had been unable to change anything.

Because changing the room felt like accepting she was gone.

But now, sitting there, he finally understood something.

Isabella had not left this room because she wanted him trapped in the past.

She left clues because she wanted him to move forward.

To find the truth.

To survive.

On the desk was the recording device.

The necklace.

And Isabella’s final notes.

Three pieces of evidence from a woman who knew her time was running out.

Vincent picked up the necklace.

The blue sapphire reflected the dim light.

He remembered the night he gave it to her.

It was their anniversary.

Isabella had laughed when she saw the gift.

“Vincent, this is too expensive.”

He had smiled.

“Nothing is too expensive for you.”

She had looked at him seriously.

“That’s exactly what scares me.”

At the time, he thought she was joking.

Now he understood.

She had always known their world came with a price.

A knock interrupted his thoughts.

“Come in.”

Lydia entered.

She looked uncertain.

“You haven’t slept.”

Vincent looked back at the window.

“Neither have you.”

A small smile appeared on her face.

“Fair point.”

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Lydia noticed the necklace in his hand.

“She loved that.”

Vincent looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“She told me.”

Lydia walked closer.

“She said it reminded her that even beautiful things could survive difficult places.”

Vincent looked down.

That sounded exactly like Isabella.

“She was always stronger than people realized.”

Lydia nodded.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“She was also afraid.”

Vincent looked up.

“Afraid of what?”

Lydia hesitated.

“Not death.”

That surprised him.

“She wasn’t afraid of dying?”

“No.”

Lydia shook her head.

“She was afraid of what would happen after.”

Vincent became quiet.

“She knew losing her would destroy you.”

The words hit him.

Because they were true.

Isabella knew him better than anyone.

She knew Vincent could survive enemies.

Business losses.

Wars.

But losing her?

That was the one thing he never prepared for.

“She wanted me to find the truth.”

“Yes.”

Lydia looked at him.

“But she also wanted you to stay yourself.”

Vincent looked away.

Because that was the battle he was fighting.

Not against Silas.

Against the anger inside him.

Meanwhile, Silas Moretti was preparing for the final move.

His private office was located across the city.

Not inside the Romano headquarters.

Not inside any official business building.

A hidden place.

Just like everything else he had built.

A second empire.

A shadow beneath Vincent’s.

Silas stood in front of a wall covered with documents.

Years of planning.

Years of patience.

Years of waiting.

He had never wanted to destroy Vincent.

Not originally.

Vincent was useful.

Powerful.

Respected.

The perfect shield.

Silas believed he could stand beside him forever.

But Isabella changed everything.

She noticed things.

She asked questions.

She followed money trails.

She saw what everyone else ignored.

And once she discovered the truth…

Silas knew there was no going back.

His phone rang.

“Report.”

A nervous voice answered.

“Vincent is moving his people. He’s checking every account connected to the organization.”

Silas closed his eyes.

“Of course he is.”

“He also has the waitress under protection.”

That made Silas pause.

Lydia.

The one person he had not considered important.

The one person Isabella trusted.

“Find her.”

A silence.

“Silas…”

His expression changed.

“Find her before Vincent gets everything.”

The call ended.

Because Silas understood something now.

The necklace was not the biggest threat.

The girl was.

Lydia carried the final piece of Isabella’s plan.

The following morning, Vincent received unexpected news.

“Boss.”

Bruno entered quickly.

“We have a problem.”

Vincent looked up.

“What happened?”

“Someone accessed the mansion security system.”

His expression changed.

“When?”

“Ten minutes ago.”

Vincent stood.

“Where?”

Bruno looked serious.

“The west wing.”

Lydia’s room.

For the first time in years, Vincent felt something close to panic.

Not anger.

Not suspicion.

Fear.

Because Lydia was not part of his world.

She was someone Isabella trusted.

Someone Vincent had promised to protect.

He moved quickly.

Bruno followed.

The hallway was empty.

Too empty.

Vincent opened the guest room door.

The room looked untouched.

Then he saw it.

The window was open.

Cold air entered.

The curtains moved.

“Lydia?”

No answer.

Vincent walked inside.

Then he noticed something on the bed.

A piece of paper.

His heart tightened.

He picked it up.

A message.

Stop looking for answers, or people you care about will disappear.

Bruno looked around.

“She’s gone.”

Vincent stared at the note.

For the first time, Silas had made a mistake.

He had taken Lydia.

But he had revealed something.

He was afraid.

Because people who are winning do not threaten.

They act.

Vincent folded the paper.

“Track every exit.”

Bruno nodded.

“We will.”

Vincent looked at the empty room.

His voice became quiet.

“He took her because she knows something.”

A pause.

“He thinks she is the weakness.”

Bruno looked at him.

“And she isn’t?”

Vincent shook his head.

“No.”

His eyes hardened.

“She is the reason we are this close.”

Lydia woke up in an unfamiliar room.

Her hands were tied.

The place was dark.

Cold.

An old warehouse.

She immediately understood.

Silas.

He stood across the room.

Calm.

Perfectly dressed.

Exactly as he always appeared.

“You’re the reason this happened.”

Lydia looked at him.

“No.”

Her voice was stronger than he expected.

“Your choices are the reason this happened.”

Silas smiled slightly.

“You sound like Isabella.”

Lydia’s expression changed.

That was the first time she saw something human in him.

Regret.

“You knew her.”

Silas looked away.

“I did.”

“And you still hurt her.”

His jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain.”

Silas looked at her.

For a moment, the powerful man disappeared.

Only a tired man remained.

“She was going to destroy everything.”

“No.”

Lydia shook her head.

“She was going to expose what you destroyed.”

Silas stepped closer.

“You think Vincent is innocent?”

Lydia remained silent.

Silas continued.

“You think this empire is clean?”

“No.”

Lydia looked directly at him.

“But Isabella believed Vincent could change.”

That sentence affected him.

Because it was true.

Isabella was the one person who believed Vincent was more than his reputation.

And she had believed Silas could be more too.

That was why the betrayal hurt.

“You don’t know what she was trying to protect,” Silas whispered.

Lydia looked at him.

“Maybe.”

A pause.

“But I know what she was trying to save.”

Silas frowned.

“What?”

“Vincent.”

The room became silent.

At that moment, Vincent arrived.

Not with an army.

Not with weapons.

Just Bruno.

Because Vincent finally understood.

This was not about power.

It was about ending the lie.

They found the warehouse through a hidden financial connection.

The same kind Silas had used for years.

Vincent entered slowly.

Silas was waiting.

Of course he was.

“You always were predictable.”

Vincent looked at him.

“No.”

A pause.

“I trusted you.”

Silas smiled sadly.

“That was your mistake.”

“No.”

Vincent stepped closer.

“My mistake was believing loyalty was something you understood.”

The two men stared at each other.

Years of friendship.

Years of memories.

Gone.

Silas looked toward Lydia.

“She was always the problem.”

Vincent immediately moved.

“Don’t.”

The warning in his voice changed everything.

Because Silas finally saw it.

Vincent was not angry about the empire.

Not the money.

Not even the betrayal.

He was angry because someone had threatened someone Isabella cared about.

Lydia looked at Vincent.

And in that moment, she understood.

Isabella was right.

The man she loved was still there.

The man beneath the power.

The man she wanted him to remain.

Silas stepped back.

The war was no longer between two powerful men.

May you like

It was between the truth and the lie.

And the truth had finally arrived.
