Chapter 6 - The Truth Buried Beneath Two Years of Silence

The words remained on the screen long after the recording ended.
“The accident was never about killing me.”
Nobody in the security room moved.
The silence was heavier than anything Vincent had felt in years.
Because death was something he understood.
He had spent his entire life surrounded by it.
He knew how people disappeared.
He knew how enemies were removed.
He knew how powerful people protected their secrets.
But Isabella’s death had always been different.
It was the one thing he could never explain.
The one loss he could never accept.
And now he finally understood why.
He had been searching for the wrong answer.
He thought someone wanted Isabella dead.
But Isabella herself had said something else.
Someone wanted what she discovered.
Someone wanted to stop her from exposing something.
Vincent stared at the frozen black screen.
His wife had known.
She had known danger was coming.
And instead of running, she had left behind a trail.
A necklace.
A note.
A recording.
A message.
She had spent her final days preparing for the possibility that she would not survive.
And the thought that hurt Vincent the most was not that someone killed her.
It was that she faced that fear alone.
“Boss.”
Bruno’s voice was quiet.
Vincent looked at him.
“Find out what money she was talking about.”
Bruno nodded.
“We’ll check every account connected to Isabella.”
“Not just her accounts.”
Vincent’s eyes hardened.
“Everything.”
“Everything?”
“Personal accounts. Business accounts. Private investments. Hidden transfers.”
He paused.
“And anything Silas had access to.”
Bruno understood.
The investigation was no longer about Isabella’s accident.
It was about the empire itself.
Because if Silas had betrayed Vincent, then the betrayal was bigger than one death.
It meant someone had been building something behind Vincent’s back for years.
Something hidden inside the foundation of everything he created.
The next morning, Vincent entered the Romano headquarters differently.
Everyone noticed.
Employees who normally looked confident suddenly became careful.
Executives stopped casual conversations when he walked past.
Security personnel stood straighter.
Because Vincent Romano had a presence people could feel.
But today there was something else.
A coldness.
A purpose.
He walked into the executive conference room where several senior managers were already waiting.
Silas was there.
Of course he was.
Always present.
Always prepared.
Always exactly where he needed to be.
“Morning,” Silas said calmly.
Vincent took his seat.
He looked around the room.
Everyone here had worked with him for years.
People he trusted.
People who helped build his empire.
And now he wondered how many of them had been part of something hidden.
“We’re reviewing old financial records,” Vincent said.
Silas’s expression barely changed.
“Old records?”
“Yes.”
“Anything specific?”
Vincent looked directly at him.
“Everything related to Isabella.”
A slight pause.
Just a fraction of a second.
But again, Vincent saw it.
Silas knew.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
“That was two years ago,” Silas said.
“Yes.”
“Why reopen something that has already been investigated?”
Vincent leaned back.
“Because investigations are only useful when people tell the truth.”
Nobody spoke.
Silas smiled faintly.
“You’re still angry.”
“No.”
Vincent shook his head.
“I’m awake.”
The room became uncomfortable.
Silas looked away.
A person less experienced would have missed it.
Vincent did not.
Silas was losing control.
Slowly.
Carefully.
But he was.
Hours later, Bruno returned with the first results.
He entered Vincent’s office carrying a tablet.
“We found something.”
Vincent immediately looked up.
“What?”
Bruno placed the tablet down.
“Three months before Isabella died, a large amount of money moved through several shell companies.”
Vincent looked at the screen.
“How much?”
“Almost twenty million dollars.”
His expression darkened.
“From where?”
“That’s the problem.”
Bruno pointed.
“The money was hidden through multiple businesses.”
Vincent studied the records.
“And the connection?”
Bruno hesitated.
“The final company receiving the funds is connected to one of Romano Holdings’ private subsidiaries.”
Vincent’s eyes narrowed.
“Who managed that subsidiary?”
Bruno didn’t answer immediately.
He didn’t need to.
Vincent already knew.
“Silas.”
Bruno nodded.
For a moment, Vincent said nothing.
Because suspicion was one thing.
Evidence was another.
And now the evidence was starting to appear.
“Is there proof Isabella knew?”
Bruno opened another file.
“Yes.”
Vincent looked.
A scanned document.
An email.
From Isabella.
Sent three days before the accident.
The recipient was unknown.
But the message was clear.
I know where the money is going. I know who is involved. If anything happens to me, Vincent needs to see this.
Vincent’s hands tightened.
“She was trying to warn me.”
“Yes.”
“But she couldn’t reach me.”
Bruno looked uncomfortable.
“Why?”
Vincent already knew.
Because someone prevented it.
Someone close enough to know her plans.
Someone close enough to intercept her messages.
Someone close enough to control information.
Silas.
That evening, Lydia stood in the mansion library looking through old photographs.
Vincent found her there.
She quickly stepped away.
“I’m sorry. I wasn’t trying to intrude.”
Vincent shook his head.
“It’s fine.”
She looked at the photograph in her hand.
Isabella smiling at an event.
“She was happy.”
Vincent looked at the picture.
“Yes.”
Lydia smiled sadly.
“She talked about you.”
Vincent looked at her.
“What did she say?”
“That everyone was afraid of you.”
A small silence.
Then Lydia continued.
“But she said you were the kindest person she knew.”
Vincent almost smiled.
Almost.
“She was wrong.”
“No.”
Lydia looked at him.
“She wasn’t.”
The confidence in her voice surprised him.
“You don’t know me.”
“I know enough.”
Vincent studied her.
“You walked into a room full of dangerous people because Isabella asked you to.”
Lydia looked down.
“That doesn’t make me brave.”
“What does it make you?”
She thought for a moment.
“Someone who owed her.”
Vincent was quiet.
Because he understood.
Isabella had that effect on people.
She made people want to protect her.
Even after she was gone.
“Why did she choose you?” Vincent asked.
Lydia touched the necklace.
“Because she knew nobody would believe me.”
Vincent frowned.
“Why?”
“Because I’m nobody.”
The answer bothered him.
Because it revealed something about the world Isabella lived in.
Everyone around her had power.
Money.
Influence.
But the person she trusted most with the truth was someone invisible.
Someone nobody would suspect.
Someone nobody would silence.
Vincent looked at her.
“You’re not nobody.”
Lydia looked surprised.
“That’s not true.”
“It is now.”
Later that night, Vincent sat alone in his office.
The city outside was covered in rain.
Just like the night Isabella died.
He looked at the recording again.
Her voice.
Her warning.
Her fear.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
Vincent answered.
Silence.
Then a voice.
“You should stop digging.”
Vincent immediately recognized it.
Silas.
His grip tightened.
“You’re threatening me?”
“No.”
Silas sounded calm.
“I’m warning you.”
“Why?”
A pause.
“Because Isabella would not want this.”
Vincent froze.
The mention of her name felt like a knife.
“You don’t get to use her name.”
Silas became quiet.
Then:
“She knew the truth would destroy everything.”
Vincent stood.
“What did you do?”
No answer.
Only breathing.
Then Silas spoke.
“You think you’re looking for the person who hurt Isabella.”
A pause.
“But you’re not ready for what you’ll find.”
The call ended.
Vincent stared at the phone.
For years, Silas had been the person who gave him answers.
Now he was the person creating questions.
And Vincent finally understood something.
Silas was not afraid because Vincent was investigating.
Silas was afraid because Vincent was getting close.
Very close.
The next morning, Bruno arrived with urgent news.
“Boss.”
Vincent looked up.
“What?”
“We found the person who helped hide the accident evidence.”
Vincent stood.
“Who?”
Bruno placed a photograph on the desk.
A former police officer.
Aaron Blake.
The detective who handled Isabella’s accident.
Vincent looked at the image.
“Where is he?”
“That’s the problem.”
Bruno hesitated.
“He disappeared yesterday.”
Vincent’s expression changed.
“After we started searching?”
“Yes.”
A long silence.
Then Vincent understood.
Someone was still moving.
Still covering tracks.
Still cleaning up the past.
And that meant they were afraid.
Vincent picked up the photograph.
Two years ago, someone thought Isabella Romano’s story had ended on a rainy road.
They were wrong.
Because Isabella had left behind a message.
And Vincent had finally heard it.
Now he was coming for everyone who had buried the truth.
No matter how powerful they were.
No matter how close they stood.
No matter what it cost him.
Because this time…
May you like
Vincent Romano was not looking for revenge.
He was looking for justice for the woman who never stopped fighting for him.
